How to make a topiary from pine cones and arborvitae

Using all-purpose glue or hot glue, glue the styrofoam ball with small pine cones. If they haven't opened yet, keep the buds in a warm place or place them in a slightly warm oven.

If there is no finished sphere, crush the newspapers into a ball shape. Wrap with white paper. Fix the ball of paper by wrapping it with white thread. Pick up cones of approximately the same size. Try to keep gaps to a minimum. If desired, you can combine with acorns or wild chestnuts.

To prevent decor elements from falling off, you can fix them with a gold-colored thread.

To decorate a pine cone topiary, cut a small piece from a sponge and paint the tips with white paint. You can use not only acrylic paint, but also gouache, and even white toothpaste.

Disassemble the thuja branches into small pieces. Gently, using a gypsy needle or knitting needle, fill in the gaps between the cones with thuja branches on the top of the topiary.

Additionally, fix all the details by randomly wrapping the ball with a golden thread.

Glue the beads to the cones, evenly distributing them over the entire area of the ball. You can use beads of one shade or several.

To finally assemble the topiary from the cones with your own hands, put together 6-7 bamboo skewers, wrap them with a thick white thread. Do not thread the bamboo sticks 4-5 cm from the sharp ends.

Poke a hole in the ball with a pencil or pen. Spread the ends of the sticks with glue and insert the stem of the topiary with cones into the ball.

Dilute the cement with water or take a ready-made cement mixture. Insert the tree of happiness into a ceramic or plastic vessel, fill it with cement, fix it with improvised means and leave it to solidify completely. Decorate the top of the pot with sisal, imitating grass.

Instead of cement, you can take gypsum, dilute it with water and fix the trunk in a pot. Decorate the pot with a satin ribbon matched to the color of the used beads.

First you need to create a base. It is made in the form of a cone of foam or cardboard. It is necessary to paint the resulting structure in a brown shade.

Another easy way to create a topiary

We will need:

cones, coniferous twigs, a thick branch for the trunk;
newspaper, paper, glue, scissors, masking tape;

Recently, I accidentally saw an article about cones on the Internet and caught fire. In that article, it was proposed to soak this natural material for a while in whiteness (bleach). There was even a photograph. The bumps on it are really white! Beauty is not real! I think that such bleached cones will make topiary even more interesting. Think about what the crown of the tree will be made of. For example, if it is lightweight foam or papier mache, the base can be made lighter.

If the crown is made of wood or other material with a relatively large weight, you will have to work hard to give the topiary durability.

Also choose a flower pot, a wide glass or another stand. Prepare the axis of the tree in advance: it can be a straight twig, a pencil, a metal knitting needle and other materials.

Prepare a hardening material for fixing the tree in a container: gypsum, cement, glue or alabaster will do. Depending on the planned decor, prepare fabric, colored paper, jewelry, scissors or paints, threads, rain, etc.

Idea #1: Simple Christmas Tree Decoration Topiary

One of the most common ideas on how to make a New Year's topiary involves the use of Christmas balls of different colors and sizes.

In addition to toys, you will need rain and tinsel, cones decorated with gilded paint, ribbons, bells and other decorative items.

Wrap the pot with cloth, ribbons or rain. If you initially chose a container with a good appearance, paint its surface with thematic patterns: snowflakes, Christmas trees, snowmen, etc. For decor, you can use colored paper and double-sided tape.

It is enough to repaint the axis of the tree in brown or wrap it with rain, ribbon or rope thread. Attach plastic Christmas balls to the crown. It is not necessary to make such a tree multi-colored: you can stop at a single color scheme - and pick up balls of the same tone, but of different sizes.

Advice: to keep the balls on the "crown" of the tree, use toothpicks. Treat their ends with glue: then the toothpick will stick tightly to the base, and the toy will not hang out.

For a bright effect, you can also use multi-colored ribbons: wrap the cone over the entire area - and you get a stylish Christmas tree, to which you can easily glue or sew on some decorations.

Sometimes a Christmas tree with a textile surface is made more lush: cut out a large number of small elements in the form of drops or triangles in advance and glue them onto a cone. The same decor can be provided through the use of green paper or cardboard.

As decor elements, you can choose berries, narrowed fruits, jewelry and other accessories. It is important that they are not overly heavy, otherwise the tree itself will fall. Idea number 3: fragrant coffee bean topiary

And such an element of decor will not only decorate your home, but also create a warming atmosphere. Both a round topiary and a miniature Christmas tree can be decorated using coffee beans. The only way to fix these elements on the surface is to use glue.

If the grains are difficult to stick to the surface of the tree (for example, when using polystyrene foam as the main material), consider how to wrap the “crown” before decorating.

Coffee beans on the topiary will look spectacular in their original form. But if you decide to diversify the decor, use gilded paint or sparkles. Rope fabric or braid can be combined with grains, as well as some dried fruits.

note that it is better to spread the grains in different ways: let the layers from the front and back sides of the grains alternate with each other. Some grains can be made "hanging" from the crown of trees: use colored threads, ropes or a thin rain.

Idea number 4: sweet topiary

Topiary made from edible sweet elements is very popular. Wrap the ball with a cloth, and wrap the Christmas tree topiary with a wide ribbon. Start attaching candies in bright wrappers to the textile surface.

They can be glued, sewn or fixed with a stapler. We advise you to choose sweets with a similar design and harmonious colors in advance - and combine them in such a way that the decorated topiary does not look contradictory.

Beads, beads, decorative snow, small Christmas balls, rain, and lace elements are traditionally used to mask the space between sweets.

Another option for a sweet tree for the new year is a topiary with tangerine decor. Attach leaves or twigs of a Christmas tree to a spherical base: they can be either natural or artificial. Take a strong wire - and wrap the tangerines: it will be easier to fix them to the surface.

some round cable (0.5 m),
building gypsum (alabaster),
satin ribbon of a suitable color with a width of 0.5-1 cm (can be replaced with 100% cotton yarn so as not to fray),
hot glue gun,

round nose pliers and pliers (for working with strong wire).

Of course, you yourself can use your imagination and add any other materials, and you will get your own unique topiary tree.

It seems that everything is simple, but in fact, often, judging by experience, there are many questions, discrepancies and inconsistencies. To avoid them, and your tree turned out perfect, listen to my advice and carefully study the master class offered to you.

First, let's prepare the trunk.

As a trunk, decorative twigs (corelius), which can be bought at florist stores, or an ordinary branch of any tree can serve as a trunk.

In this case, consider the option of manufacturing a twisted stem for a topiary from a round cable and strong wire.

We take a strong wire (I have a metal hanger) and a round cable.

I pulled out the cores from the cable, which I replaced with a strong wire. The hanger can be straightened and cut off the required length with pliers.

We voluntarily bend. From below, I also bend the wire for a strong fixation in plaster. I made another additional decorative curl.

A decorative look can be given with a satin ribbon or yarn: we twist it in a spiral, periodically fixing it with hot glue. It's better to do it right away.

As a fixative, I always use building gypsum (alabaster).

The hole in the planter pot can be sealed with ordinary adhesive tape.

Building gypsum (alabaster) is diluted with cool water to the consistency of thick sour cream and put in a pot.

We set the entire composition in the center and hold until the gypsum hardens.

At the base of the crown is always a ball, which can be made of foam, foil, papier-mâché, newspaper, etc. Most importantly, the lighter it is, the better.

I have a crumpled ball from old newspapers, we wrap it with any thread.

We make a small hole in which we then fix the barrel with hot glue.

Cooking sisal balls. It is very simple to make them, we roll a small piece of sisal between two palms, just as we roll a plasticine ball in our hands.

We attach prepared sisal balls, cones and small Christmas tree balls to the crown base with hot glue.

We decorate as desired, and now we have an unusual, very cute holiday topiary - a decorative tree that will decorate the winter holidays!

This master class assumes that you will make a pot for a tree with your own hands. You can take an ordinary milk bottle, cut off the neck in it, make the edges even. According to the shape of the bottom of the bottle, you need to make a piece of colored paper, glue it to the bottom with hot glue.

Further MK includes the following steps:

A bamboo rug is needed in order to finally decorate the pot. The mat is cut so that it protrudes slightly beyond the edges of the milk bottle. The rug is wrapped around the cut bottle, glued to it. Using the photo examples, you can take a closer look at what kind of decor is obtained using bamboo rugs.
The decor of the pot is completed by gluing burlap and a bow. A piece of burlap should also be wrapped around the flowerpot, first it is glued, and on top - a thin satin ribbon. Under the tape, you can stick a small branch of mountain ash.
Next, you'll need a styrofoam ball. This point is worth clarifying. Today, every second master class involves the use of just such a blank, which is purchased in needlework stores. It serves as a solid basis for the formation of the crown. But the basis can be made with your own hands. From the old way (a lump of newspaper) to finding the same round small object (a rubber baby ball).
Make a hole in the ball where the stem of the cone topiary will be inserted. These will be branches folded into one bundle.

This point also needs to be considered in more detail. Usually a classic topiary workshop suggests taking sushi sticks, pencils or wire as the basis for the trunk. But this MK says that the branches in the topiary with cones will look more natural.

Topiary from cones: a master class step by step

After you have a pot, a foam base and a trunk of branches inserted into it, it's time to prepare the cones with your own hands. Ideally, if they are small in size and approximately the same.

You can find a separate master class on how to decorate cones. The methods are very different. For example, you can cover them with white paint, then, after waiting for drying, apply PVA glue with a sponge, and sprinkle sea salt on top of the cones. Get such snow cones.

You can paint the bumps with spray paint. What color is better to take, look at the photo. If this is a New Year's topiary, golden and silver colors are appropriate.

Returning to the MK, the actions will be as follows:

Insert a crown ball on a branch into a pot. It can be a vase already filled with earth, or filled with fresh gypsum. As you wish, but the trunk of the branches should sit firmly in the pot.
From above you need to decorate something with earth or plaster. It can be artificial grass if the topiary is still autumn. There you can also throw a couple of miniature maple leaves. You can see the ideas in the photo.
Next, the master class instructs to make a crown. Namely - to glue cones. The elements are fixed with hot glue in a circle. Make sure that there are no gaps, otherwise they will have to be filled with something. Or, initially paint the workpiece with the same silver aerosol.
New Year's topiary involves snow decor. Cotton wool, tinsel, the same sea salt, felt snowflakes, silver threads - you can make the most incredible snowball with your own hands. Or take artificial snow for such a topiary from cones.
