Mexidol is a mild treatment for severe neurological disorders. Mexidol: side effects, reviews, description, consequences of taking

Not a bad drug

Grade: 5

I drink often, so I take this drug to make the recovery easier. I noticed that during the reception, the brain is slow to think (you sit stupidly like in a cellphone and stare at TV or at one point) and you constantly want to eat. These are my personal comments. Without a doubt, the drug increases endurance by up to 30%. These are my personal observations, perhaps this will not happen to you.

Useless

Grade: 3

As much as the Mexidol injections I injected last year helped me, the pills I took a course of recently turned out to be so useless. I take the drug to suppress the symptoms of vegetative-vascular dystonia as one of the medications recommended by the doctor. So, after a ten-day course of droppers with Mexidol, a stable remission always occurred, the painful headaches and dizziness, internal tremor and chills stopped. The anxiety and feeling of lack of air went away. And then, for at least six months, I did not need any special maintenance therapy. But somehow things didn’t work out with the pills. Although I took them exactly according to the instructions: first, one three times a day, then two with the same regularity, and reduced the course to nothing, returning to taking three things a day. So the package lasted me just enough for a month. But this month I did not get the result that I got from the injections in a week. Some symptoms went away, including headaches, tinnitus, insomnia and fatigue. But from the mental side, everything remained in the same place. And panic attacks, which caused an acute lack of air, and irritability, and breakdowns.

Nervous condition cannot be cured

Grade: 3

Mexidol was used to treat cervical osteochondrosis. Tablets come in 125 ml. There are 50 pieces in a package (4 blisters inside). The cost is a bit high for me. They are easy to drink, they are small in size and are swallowed quickly. The instructions are huge, it took a lot of time to study it.
I was prescribed a small dosage, 1 tablet twice a day. It was necessary to drink for three weeks, without increasing the number of tablets.
At first there were no sensations at all - neither improvement nor worsening. Then I felt that my head stopped hurting so much. I was constantly tormented by a state of anxiety; the drug did not combat nervous tension at all. I had to take additional medications for irritability and fatigue. And these are additional costs.
I only had bad dreams, or none at all. In the mornings I felt dejected and unwanted. It seemed that I had not rested at all, I wanted to go back to bed, close myself off from everyone, turn off the phone and not leave the house.
The pills helped with the dizziness, everything went away for me, but they can’t cope with the nervousness. Either immediately take some Magnicum in addition, or look for a stronger drug.

The drug does not help with sudden changes in weather

Grade: 4

They gave me Mexidol intramuscularly. The terrible headaches began to subside only after 5 injections. The dizziness went away and my thoughts became clearer.
The injection is very painful and is given in the buttock. Then this place burns, the leg goes numb and is taken away. After the injection, I lay down on the couch for 20-30 minutes, and only then could I do some business.
Before the injection you need to eat heavily, but I didn’t know that. During the next procedure, everything went dark in my eyes and I lost consciousness. It's okay, but the unpleasant memories remain. Then I always had a good lunch before the injection. When the drug was injected into a vein, my throat always began to sore, a nasty taste of the medicine appeared in my mouth and I simply had a cough. There was a cough with every injection!
After the course, I recovered normally and returned to my normal lifestyle. Everything seemed to be fine, but a month later the dizziness started again. I had to switch to Mexidol tablets.
Now I take them on a regular basis, 1 tablet three times a day. The condition is stable, there is no depression, an interest in life has appeared. With a sudden change in weather, deterioration appears, not very critical, but unpleasant. We have to walk around in a fog until the weather gets better.

A gentle option for neurosis

Grade: 5

This is not an antidepressant, the medicine simply improves cerebral circulation, but how it helps! About a year ago, due to problems with work and family, I developed a serious neurosis, and then a psychotherapist at the district clinic prescribed Mexidol. This is a very gentle option, because the medicine does not dull your emotions, does not put you into a state of blissful calm, like antidepressants, it alleviates your physical condition, has a beneficial effect on the brain, which in turn leads to an improvement in your mental state. I felt it well myself. The medicine is of an average price category, costs around five hundred rubles for fifty tablets. You need to take it three times a day. I haven’t noticed any side effects, I can even drive without any lethargy or drowsiness. The medicine works quickly, within a few days. It felt like I was gradually emerging from the water - every day I was getting out of the problems that were tormenting me. I began to sleep better, anxiety, obsessive thoughts, and tearfulness went away. Life began to sparkle with colors, interest in the world around us awakened again. My relationship with my husband has improved. I took the medicine for a month, the treatment has already ended, but I feel good, the symptoms of neurosis have not returned. In this simple way I managed to cure my nerves.

The pills caused me to be distracted

Grade: 4

I bought Mexidol in tablets. There are 50 pieces in a box. The method of application was strictly according to the instructions. I started treatment with 2 tablets twice a day, then the dosage reached 6 tablets. This norm cannot be exceeded. At the end of the course, the dosage decreased. The entire course took me two and a half weeks. This period is individual for everyone, and can last from 2 to 6 weeks.
In the very first days after taking the drug, I began to feel a slight feeling of intoxication, like from alcohol. This seems to be good, the brain is saturated with oxygen, but being in this state all day is not comfortable, I became distracted and inattentive. This really bothered me at work.
Then I just felt drowsy. Although sleep is the best medicine for the body, I just slept on the go. In the mornings I woke up a little hard and didn’t look very good.
On the plus side, I would like to point out that the condition of the VSD has not worsened and I have become calmer and more resilient. Problematic situations did not evoke strong emotions in me, I did not get nervous, but at the same time my state was closer to apathetic than happy. Maybe the drug helped someone as prescribed, but for me it only kept my nerves at rest and didn’t let me worry about trifles.

Reasonable application required

Grade: 4

I came across the drug Mexidol about a year ago, the first thing that surprised me was that it is sold mainly only in Russia, moreover, it is included in the list of vital drugs, although there is little information about it, clinical trials were carried out very superficially and judged their reliability is quite difficult. The thought immediately creeps in that someone needs this. One thing is reassuring that the drug is quite affordable and shows its effectiveness for some diseases, especially those associated with mental disorders.
But I still mistrust drugs with such a wide spectrum of action, they are usually prescribed unnecessarily or when the doctor cannot make a real diagnosis, and the drug really improves the general condition of the patient by improving mood, reducing anxiety and normalizing brain function, but the real problem often remains and emerges in a new way after stopping the drug; new problems may also appear due to the body’s addiction. Therefore, treatment with Mexidol often needs to be carried out in conjunction with consultations with a psychologist or psychiatrist, especially if there is such an “interesting” diagnosis as VSD.

Helps with exacerbations

Grade: 4

Periodically suffer from headaches, ailments and increased nervous excitability, especially in the autumn or spring seasons. For which Mexidol helps well. I take it, on the recommendation of my attending physician, twice a year, during attacks of exacerbation of the consequences of an old injury (it all started after the accident). I start taking one tablet three times a day, increase it to the maximum daily dose of six tablets, then gradually reduce the dosage.
From the very first days there is some relief: spasmodic pain disappears, it’s as if a pressure hoop has been removed from the head, and the mood lifts. There are no bouts of blues and depression. I don’t observe any special side effects from it: neither lethargy, nor, on the contrary, nervousness. Even meteosensitivity decreases; I practically stop reacting to weather changes. I just noticed this strange thing - every time I undergo a course of treatment with Mexidol, my biological rhythm shifts. Like a baby who confuses day with night: long after midnight I’m awake, but during the day I fall asleep while walking. This “schedule” significantly complicates the work process; you have to drink a heavy dose of coffee in the morning.

I coped with the task

Grade: 5

The doctor prescribed the drug after a minor concussion. I refused intravenous administration; I didn’t want to, so I took it in tablet form. It was frankly annoying that while taking the drug, some foods are prohibited - those that contribute to the production of dopamine. Otherwise, you can “earn” excessive contraction of cells in the cerebral cortex and, as a result, convulsions and even coma. Okay, alcohol is taboo, you can endure it painlessly. But it was difficult to refuse cheese and chocolate. And especially from my favorite bananas and strawberries. It's strawberry season here, and I can't eat a single berry. The mood, of course, is very bad about this.
But, in principle, Mexidol coped with the task. And not bad. I had to drink for quite a long time, more than a month and a half, strictly observing the recommended dosage: increasing from the beginning of the intake and decreasing towards its end. After the course of treatment, semi-fainting states, attacks of weakness, disorientation in space and sharp headaches disappeared. The nervous system also stabilized, the blues and depression went away. In the morning after sleep, I no longer felt weak and unwilling to leave the bed.

In 1996, a good antioxidant composition appeared in Russian pharmacies - the drug Mexidol. The composition has found wide use in neurology for its ability to normalize metabolic processes in brain tissue and protect them from the harmful effects of free radicals. But its use is not limited to this. It is prescribed by narcologists, surgeons and psychiatrists for appropriate conditions. Experts highly value the new generation medicine for its unique properties and pharmacological advantages over other neuropsychotropic compounds:

  • Increase resistance to stressful situations.
  • Restore speech functions, improve memory properties after brain damage as a result of ischemic attacks and strokes.
  • Prevent seizures.
  • Neutralize various types of intoxication in the body.

Composition of the drug

The instructions for use say that the active substance in Mexidol is 3-hydroxy-6-methyl-2-ethylpyridine succinate. Succinates are salts of succinic acid, a natural metabolite for humans, a participant in energy metabolism reactions. The tissues receive acid in sufficient quantities from rye bread and, with adequate nutrition, do not experience a lack of it.

Dosage forms of Mexidol:

  • pills;
  • solutions for injection (50 mg DV/ml).

The drug is produced with a mass fraction of DV of 5%. The volume of ampoules is 2 ml/5 ml. One contour package includes 5 ampoules.

2 times more, that is, 10 ampoules (2 boxes of 5 ampoules with a volume of 2 ml) each containing Mexidol 10, respectively. The drug is administered according to a certain scheme, depending on the pathology.

There may also be preparations containing 5-10 ampoules with a solution of the same concentration (5%) and a volume of 2 ml/5 ml.

One tablet contains:

  • DV - 125 mg;
  • sodium carmellose;
  • lactose;
  • magnesium salt of stearic acid.

Mechanism of action

Cells are bounded by a plasma membrane consisting of a lipid bilayer. The active substance from the composition of the drug in question slows down or prevents the peroxidation of membrane phospholipids. Hence its membrane-protective properties. As an antioxidant, DV inhibits oxidative processes involving free radicals, after which the antioxidant enzyme is activated and the fluidity of biological membranes increases.

This, in turn, leads to improved transport of neurotransmitters and an increase in the rate of binding of receptor complexes to membrane-binding enzymes. As a result, the body better resists oxygen deficiency and all processes provoked by hypoxia.

Indications for use

The use of Mexidol showed that it:

  • increases the level of dopamine in brain cells;
  • normalizes cerebral blood supply and metabolism in nervous tissue;
  • reduces platelet aggregation;
  • reduces the concentration of cholesterol in the blood;
  • reduces the manifestation of signs of intoxication of the body;
  • activates the aerobic stage of glycolysis;
  • increases the number of ATP and creatine phosphate molecules;
  • activates cellular respiration in mitochondria and energy production;
  • stabilizes biological membranes;
  • normalizes metabolism in the myocardium after ischemic attacks;
  • reduces necrotic phenomena in the myocardium;
  • improves the properties of the heart: contractility and conductivity;
  • increases visual acuity by improving retinal functionality.

Mexidol tablets help overcome the consequences of high emotional stress, which is expressed by:

  • in restoring functions that support learning;
  • in a restful sleep;
  • in eliminating somatovegetative problems.

The medicine Mexidol, administered intramuscularly, also helps treat the consequences of alcohol intoxication:

  • restores human behavior;
  • eliminates symptoms of withdrawal symptoms.

The answer to the question “What does Mexidol help with?” can also be supplemented with its geroprotective effect, expressed by:

  • in the correction of memorization and learning, which are impaired during aging;
  • in reducing the level of aging markers.

The drug enhances the effect of antidepressant and tranquilizing drugs, thereby reducing their side effects and reducing therapeutic dosages.

Pharmakinetics

The peak concentration of DV in the blood occurs half an hour after intramuscular administration. After this period, the active substance quickly penetrates the tissues, from where it is also quickly removed.

In the liver, DV is converted into other pharmacologically active metabolites. It is excreted in the urine, partly in its original form.

Mexidol tablets are characterized by rapid absorption of the active substance, its distribution throughout the tissues and the same rapid release. After 4-5 hours, laboratory tests no longer detect DV in the blood.

Why are Mexidol injections prescribed? Mexidol in ampoules is indicated for:

  • poisoning of the body;
  • withdrawal intoxication and accompanying disorders;
  • primary open-angle glaucoma as part of complex treatment;
  • acute myocardial infarction as part of complex therapy;
  • anxiety states;
  • cognitive disorders due to atherosclerosis;
  • vegetative-vascular dystonia (VSD);
  • slowly progressive cerebrovascular insufficiency;
  • traumatic brain injury;
  • acute disruption of cerebral blood supply.

For Mexidol tablets, the indications are similar:

  • asthenic syndrome;
  • intoxication after taking antipsychotic drugs;
  • alcohol withdrawal;
  • cardiac ischemia;
  • anxiety as a consequence of neurotic conditions;
  • encephalopathy of various nature;
  • skull injuries;
  • epilepsy.

There are few contraindications for taking Mexidol. It is not recommended for patients with acute renal or liver failure, as well as individual sensitivity to DV and auxiliary components in the drug.

Pediatrics does not have statistically reliable data obtained from studying the effect of the drug on the child’s body. Therefore, only the attending physician prescribes Mexidol for children, and after administration, monitors the course of the disease. The composition is prescribed in case a child receives a traumatic brain injury, as well as for the treatment of purulent infections of the nervous tissue.

Toxicity and side effects

The instructions for use of the drug state that minor side effects, as well as low toxicity, are the undeniable advantages of the drug. Side effects of Mexidol are rare and can be in the form of:

  • symptoms of an allergic reaction;
  • drowsiness;
  • excessive dryness of the oral mucosa;
  • nausea.

Those taking the drug may complain of individual reactions:

  • lethargy;
  • general weakness;
  • lack of appetite;
  • flatulence;
  • allergic conditions.

Taking the drug Mexidol (injections) may be accompanied by surges in blood pressure, impaired coordination of movements, circadian sleep-wake rhythm, and emotional reactivity. Those taking the drug can rest assured about their liver. Also preserved normally:

  • blood composition;
  • respiratory rate;
  • heart rate and electrocardiogram;
  • blood pressure parameters.

Stopping the medication is not accompanied by a withdrawal effect.

Instructions for using injections

When administered intravenously, Mexidol (ampoules) is diluted with saline solution. The composition is administered intramuscularly for 1.5 to 3 minutes. Drip - carried out at a speed of 80-120 drops/minute. The dosage and duration of the course are affected by the severity of the pathology. In case of impaired cerebral blood supply, when the patient is in a specialized neurology or intensive care unit, he is given 400 mg (8 ml) of medication twice a day intravenously for 15 days. The daily dose cannot exceed 1600 mg.

For the next 15 days, keep the same dosage, but administer it once a day. Subsequently, Mexidol injections are administered intramuscularly for 10-15 days at a dosage of 200 mg (4 ml) of the drug. Upon completion of the course, the doctor recommends taking tablets: 0.25-0.5 g/day for 1-1.5 months, with the daily dose divided into 2-3 doses.

About compatibility with other medications

Mexidol may be prescribed to enhance the effect of certain compounds that have a psychotropic effect, such as:

  • tranquilizers;
  • analgesics;
  • anticonvulsants;
  • benzodiazepines;
  • carbamazepine and others.

In any therapeutic regimen, Mexidol is compatible with all components of complex treatment. Its advantages also include the ability to reduce the toxicity of ethanol. Its use in the treatment of alcohol dependence is based on how Mexidol and alcohol interact, as well as on the property of removing ethyl alcohol metabolites from tissues.

Comparison with other drugs

Mexidol is a new generation drug, so it is compared with other already known compounds.

Among the drugs with similar purposes, a special place is occupied by Mexidol’s analogue, Actovegin, which has appropriate applications and is prescribed together with Mexildol to achieve the desired therapeutic result. For those who are interested in what is the difference between them or what is better, Actovegin or Mexidol, you need to know that the use of Actovegin is often accompanied by an allergic reaction, since the raw material for its production is calf blood. Although it helps the affected tissues recover faster. The active substances in both drugs can interact, influence each other’s structure and increase side effects. Therefore, they do not mix in one syringe.

There are other analogues of Mexidol on the pharmaceutical market. For example, some cheap analogues of the drug differ only in additional components. You cannot use an analogue on your own instead of a medicine like Mexidol. These questions are decided by the doctor individually for each person. He also determines in each specific case which is better, for example, Mexiprim or Mexidol. Mexicor and Mexidol are another matter, because the first is a generic or a synonym for the second. It also finds use as a means of improving the condition of patients after a stroke, relieving anxiety and fears, increasing attention, and eliminating the consequences of alcohol intoxication.

Use of the drug in veterinary medicine

Mexidol vet is an analogue of the well-known drug. It is intended for use in veterinary medicine, in particular in the treatment of cats and dogs if they suffer from:

  • epilepsy;
  • heart failure in chronic or acute form;
  • impaired cerebral blood supply;
  • brain injury.

Mexidol Vet helps prepare animals for surgery, and after surgical treatment ensures the recovery of four-legged patients. Also, the drug Mexidol Vet serves to prevent disorders observed during aging of animals. It helps prepare dogs for exhibitions and withstand extreme stress during training.

The medicine Mexidol vet can also be in the form of tablets or a solution intended for injection. Ampoules can have a volume of 1-2 ml. The active ingredient is the same as in the composition taken by people. The solution contains DV at a concentration of 25-50 mg per 1 milliliter. It is administered intramuscularly. Composition No. 10 contains, respectively, 10 ampoules of 1 ml of solution with a mass fraction of DV of 2.5% at a price of 320 rubles. The drug, which contains 10 (5 ampoules of 2 ml each) 5% solution, is 200 rubles more expensive. One tablet of the drug weighing 250 mg contains 50 mg of DV.

The duration of the course, as well as the dosage, is determined by the veterinarian. The drug is contraindicated if the animal is individually sensitive to any component of Mexidol vet.

Mexidol Dent toothpaste

Dentistry was also able to take advantage of the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the drug in the form of Mexidol Dent toothpaste. It has shown its effectiveness in the form of:

  • increasing immunity;
  • reducing bleeding gums;
  • effective remedy in the treatment of periodontitis.

Thanks to Mexidol Dent toothpaste, patients in the oral cavity:

  • micro-wounds heal faster;
  • the mucous membrane is restored;
  • bacteria die.

The above effects are possible if Mexidol Dent is used 2-3 times a day.

For those with hypersensitive gums, a type of Mexidol Dent paste with potassium nitrate is provided to treat caries and reduce tooth sensitivity, which is usually observed when the main components of the mineral composition are lost.

Mexidol dent toothpaste can whiten teeth and be used to treat stomatitis and gingivitis. The manufacturer took care of comprehensive dental care and, in addition to Mexidol dent paste, produced an elixir for rinsing and healing the oral mucosa. Mexidol toothpaste costs about 70 rubles. For comparison: for Mexidol tablets (50 pcs.), the price starts from 400 rubles.

Patients, like doctors, leave positive reviews about the medication. Everyone notes that it has broad indications for use, minimal side effects, and the ability to improve the condition of patients with vegetative-vascular dystonia, as well as those who have suffered micro-strokes and other cerebrovascular accidents.

Quick page navigation

Mexidol is a synthetic antioxidant. It has a pharmacological effect on three levels at once: metabolic, vascular and neuronal.

Due to the targeted effect of the drug on all parts of pathogenic free radical oxidation, it is successfully used to treat many psychoneurological and cardiovascular diseases.

About the drug, composition, release form

The drug is available in two forms - tablets and solution for injection. Mexidol tablets contain 125 mg of ethylmethylhydroxypyridine succinate. They are white, coated, and are available in 30 or 50 pieces per package.

In addition to the active substance (Mexidolum), the drug contains auxiliary components: potato starch, white clay, Tween-80, octadecanoic acid, calcium stearate (E-572), methylcellulose, talc and titanium dioxide. The liquid form of the drug is available with a drug dosage of 50 mg/ml in ampoules of 2 or 5 ml.

The active component of the drug is Mexidol (chemical name ethylmethylhydroxypyridine succinate). This neuroprotector has the following pharmacological effects:

  • inhibits free radical oxidation of lipids (antioxidant effect);
  • has a membrane-stabilizing effect (membrane-protective effect);
  • reduces the likelihood of cell damage during ischemia (antihypoxic effect);
  • has anticonvulsant activity;
  • has a nootropic and anxiolytic effect;
  • reduces the concentration of cholesterol and “bad” lipoproteins (hypolipidemic effect);
  • has an anti-stress effect.

Thanks to its chemical structure, Mexidol helps to normalize the structural and functional elements of cell membranes, restore neurotransmitter balance, improve the energy balance of cells, reduce membrane viscosity and increase their fluidity.

Mexidol - what does it help with?

What Mexidol helps with is easy to understand by its pharmacological effects - the drug is prescribed for both prevention and treatment of many conditions. Usually these are diseases associated with disorders of the nervous or cardiovascular systems. Mexidol is prescribed in the following situations:

  1. Prevention and treatment of circulatory disorders in the brain (chronic and acute);
  2. Rehabilitation after head injuries;
  3. Various encephalopathies;
  4. Vegetative-vascular dystonia syndrome;
  5. Neuroses and anxiety states;
  6. Complex therapy of atherosclerosis with cognitive disorders;
  7. Complex therapy of coronary heart disease;
  8. Poisoning with antipsychotic drugs;
  9. Withdrawal syndrome;
  10. Open angle glaucoma;
  11. Prevention of the occurrence of pathologies against the background of regular extreme loads;
  12. Influence of stress factors.

Mexidol is used to treat diseases that are accompanied by neurodegeneration, for example, stroke, etc. It has an anti-amnesic effect and helps improve memory and thinking abilities, for which Mexidol is used in elderly people and in patients with cognitive disorders.

The drug can be used in complex treatment with anticonvulsants, since it potentiates their effect and makes it possible to reduce their dosage.

Considering what Mexidol helps with, it should be noted that the drug can also be used in healthy people under increased emotional, mental or physical stress, to save the body's resources.

Instructions for use of Mexidol for various diseases

Mexidol solution is administered intramuscularly or intravenously, the dosage is selected depending on the pathology, condition of the patient and his individual characteristics.

For intravenous drip infusions, administration of the drug should be slow - no faster than 60 drops per minute, jet administration should last 5-7 minutes.

  • A single dose should not be higher than 250 mg, and a daily dose should be 800 mg.

Complex therapy with Mexidol injections for cerebrovascular accidents begins with the administration of 200-400 mg intravenously every day, and from the 5th day it changes to intramuscular administration of 100 mg three times a day. Course duration – 2 weeks.

Treatment after head injuries consists of intravenous administration of 200 - 500 mg of the drug daily 3 times for 15 days. Discirculatory encephalopathy is treated with Mexidol for about a month, the first half of the month is administered intravenously at 100 mg 3 times a day, and the second half is administered intramuscularly 1 time a day.

When treating cognitive disorders in elderly people, 100-300 mg of the drug is administered intramuscularly for two to four weeks.

  • According to the instructions for use, Mexidol in tablet form is taken 125-250 mg 2-3 times a day. The daily dose should not be higher than 800 mg.

On average, therapy lasts 7-14 days, the dosage is gradually increased, and then gradually reduced towards the end of therapy. For combined treatment of coronary heart disease, the drug is taken for 1.5-2 months.

special instructions

The medicine may cause difficulty concentrating and drowsiness. Therefore, during therapy you should avoid driving vehicles and doing work that requires quick reactions.

It is important to remember that Mexidol enhances the effect of some anticonvulsant and sedative medications, so the doctor must adjust their dosage to avoid unwanted effects.

Side effects of Mexidol, contraindications

Taking Mexidol may cause side effects. The most common complaints are nausea and dry mouth, but other adverse effects may also occur:

  • drowsiness;
  • dizziness;
  • changes in blood pressure;
  • allergic reactions;
  • sleep disorders;
  • increased sweating;
  • feeling of anxiety and emotional tension.

The drug should not be taken if the liver and kidneys are insufficient, in childhood, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or if there is hypersensitivity to the components of the drug. Overdose causes drowsiness and is treated with detoxification therapy.

Mexidol analogues, list of drugs

Analogues of the Russian drug Mexidol are:

  • Armadin,
  • Venokor,
  • Dinar,
  • Zamexen,
  • Meximidol,
  • Mexiprim,
  • Nikomex,
  • Elfunat.

Remember that a doctor’s consultation is required, but if you are going to use an analogue of Mexidol already prescribed, the instructions for use, price and reviews do not apply to analogues and cannot be used as a guide for treatment. When replacing Mexidol, consultation with the attending physician is required; it is possible to change the treatment regimen, dosage, etc.

According to doctors, Mexidol is a low-toxic drug that has a large therapeutic range and virtually no side effects. It shows high effectiveness in the treatment of neurological, mental and cardiovascular diseases. It can be used to treat chronic and acute processes, and can also be used to support the body during increased mental and physical stress.

The circulatory system serves as the body's highways, providing its parts with nutrition and oxygen.

Ensuring a sufficient level of blood supply is critical for the normal functioning of internal organs, especially the brain.

It is known that in case of problems with blood circulation, brain dysfunction can occur, and even a very short period of oxygen starvation negatively affects this important organ. A modern remedy, Mexidol, helps solve this problem effectively and safely.

Circulatory disorders can occur due to a variety of diseases. The most common causes of such dysfunction are cardiovascular diseases - stroke, encephalopathy, atherosclerosis.

Today, effective drugs have been developed that help prevent insufficient oxygen supply to the brain. But does Mexidol increase or decrease blood pressure? How does the drug affect the body in general?

Mexidol is designed for use in neurology, surgery and even psychiatry. It is used for:

  • circulatory disorders, including cerebral ones;
  • vegetative-vascular dystonia;
  • disorders of brain function in atherosclerosis;
  • withdrawal syndrome caused by alcoholism.

Mexidol is used as part of complex therapy. In addition, this remedy is applicable in the treatment of peritonitis, acute forms of pancreatitis, as well as relieving the consequences of an overdose of antipsychotics.

In all these cases, Mexidol showed a fairly high effectiveness of use. The use of the drug for the treatment and prevention of asthenic conditions, cardiac ischemia, and cognitive disorders is also allowed and recommended. The use of Mexidol is also indicated for persistent exposure to stress-forming factors and excessive psychological or physical stress.

This list is not complete - the drug is recommended for use for the treatment of a fairly wide range of diseases and dysfunctions associated with insufficient blood supply to internal organs.

Mexidol injection solution

The industry produces this drug in two main forms - for oral use and for injection. Film-coated tablets weighing 125 mg are administered orally. For injections, capsules of a five percent solution of the active substance with a volume of two milliliters are produced. Pharmacology does not produce other dosage forms of this drug.

Is it possible to drink Mexidol with high blood pressure? It is possible and sometimes necessary, but only as prescribed by a doctor. The fact is that there is no clear answer to the question of whether Mexidol increases or decreases. This mainly depends on the individual characteristics of the patient. Therefore, Mexidol with high blood pressure can bring both benefit and harm. T

Biochemistry of the drug's effects

The biochemical effect of Mexidol differs from the action of drugs of the neuropsychotropic group. Unlike the latter, which act on certain receptors, it inhibits free radical oxidation in the body.

Under the influence of the active substances of the drug, certain antioxidant enzymes are activated. Mexidol has a beneficial effect on the cell membrane, restoring its functionality, reduces the colloidality of the lipid layer, and increases the activity of mitochondria.

As a result, energy metabolism at the cellular level improves, which leads to restoration of the apparatus and structure of cell membranes. These positive changes, in turn, through complex biochemical processes affect the stabilization of neural connections, significantly increasing the effectiveness of neurotransmitters - special substances that serve to transmit impulses coming from the body's nerve cells.

At the same time, antioxidant processes are enhanced, which has a beneficial effect on the functionality of cells and the organ as a whole. In addition, Mexidol reduces blood pressure and can bind free lipids. This effect of the drug leads to a significant anti-cholesterol effect from its use, which improves the quality of blood vessels.

Thanks to its complex action, the drug actively affects the functioning of the brain, improving the relationships between its structures, restoring blood circulation and helping to reduce the intensity of oxidative processes, which are the main cause of dysfunction at the cellular level.

This allows Mexidol to effectively influence the mechanism of occurrence and development of a wide range of diseases, suppressing them, and initiate the launch of protective biochemical reactions of the body itself.

Moreover, the drug is non-toxic, and its targeted effect causes fewer side effects and unwanted reactions of the body than the effect of antipsychotics.

Mexidol is also used as a prophylactic agent.

Medicinal effects

The pharmacological effects of taking Mexidol are very diverse. It acts both on a deeper level, improving neural connections, and on a more general level, significantly improving the patency of the circulatory system. As a result, the effect of its use is very broad and pronounced in various pathologies.

Mexidol blood pressure tablets

Mexidol protects the central nervous system, having vegetotropic and antiparksonian effects. Relieves neurotic deficiency, has anti-alcohol and tranquilizing effects. Can Mexidol lower blood pressure?

Yes, taking the drug can improve cerebral circulation, increase the lifespan of platelets, while simultaneously reducing the level of blood density and reducing the risk of developing blood clots.

The overall level of bad cholesterol also decreases. The action of Mexidol has a beneficial effect on the body's resistance to various external aggressive factors. Resistance to shock, situations, prolonged lack of sleep or disruption of its cycles and patterns increases.

The body's resistance to ethanol and some other substances that cause intoxication, including medications, increases.

In addition, the product has a pronounced anti-stress effect. Its intake leads to normalization of post-stress processes and reactions, normalization of sleep.

Reduces the impact on the cardiovascular system, reducing the risk of developing pathologies of the brain and myocardium, the occurrence of which is associated with psychological stress. The anticonvulsant effect of Mexidol occurs regardless of the pathogenesis of seizures.

The drug is effective for relieving chronic processes associated with excitation of epileptiform brain activity. At the same time, the remedy also helps with convulsions caused by external factors, such as the administration of certain medications.

Taking Mexidol improves memory functions, increases learning ability, and reduces the intensity of processes that lead to forgetting previously acquired knowledge, skills and abilities.

Impairments of memory and functions of the higher nervous system, caused by various traumatic effects - electric shock, severe blows to the head, compression injuries of the brain, as well as the action of drugs scopolamine, benzodeazipine and others, are also relieved.

The effect of post-alcohol amnesia and deterioration in the narrative functions of the human brain are also reduced.

Laboratory studies have revealed the ability of Mexidol to have a beneficial effect on internal organs experiencing insufficient blood supply. Mexidol is an active anti-dihypoxant, its action is based on the activation of energy-synthesizing functions of cells.

A number of experiments conducted - both on experimental animals and on isolated organs that had undergone perforation - showed the effect of the drug during hypobaric oxygen starvation, including those accompanied by an excess of carbon dioxide accumulated in the tissues of the organ.

In terms of this effect, Mexidol is significantly superior to such well-known drugs as piracetam and pyritinol.

These drugs can relatively effectively combat the lack of oxygen only with a very large dosage, and the oversaturation of cells with carbon dioxide reduces the effectiveness of their effects to almost zero.

In addition, side effects from overdoses of these drugs often do not allow them to be used effectively. In addition, the drug has a positive effect on human catabolism due to the presence of succinic acid salts in its composition. These substances act as catalysts for the tricarboxylic acid cycle, the most important chemical process at the cellular level.

A clearly calculated amount of this substance, which is a toxic agent in case of overdose, is not capable of causing harm to health, but can actively improve cellular respiration. Thus, this succinate enhances the beneficial effects of Mexidol.

A specialist can prescribe the drug for dysfunctions not related to the brain. Mexidol is sometimes used for low blood pressure and, oddly enough, for high blood pressure too.

Side effects

Studies have revealed a low level of side effects of Mexidol and a virtual absence of negative effects on the body if used correctly. The main side effect of the drug begins to appear if the maximum permissible dosage is radically exceeded.

An overdose of the drug threatens the occurrence of disorders of the body's motor functions and general inhibition of motor skills. Coordination of movements may be impaired, and reflex muscle contraction may decrease.

Mexidol slightly increases blood pressure, causes drowsiness, and depression. Such side effects were recorded only in 2–3 percent of patients taking the drug, mainly among those undergoing treatment for alcohol dependence.

At the same time, even hyperdoses of Mexidol do not cause side effects characteristic of many other drugs. For example, there was no negative effect of the drug on liver function. On the contrary, if the dose is exceeded, the medicine begins to act on the body as a hepatoprotector, restoring the functionality of this organ.

There was no memory deterioration, drowsiness or disturbances in brain function. The drug is not addictive.

The product does not affect body temperature, heart and kidney function.

There were no problems with respiratory function, vision, or other side effects even during long-term use, over two to three months.

Any combination of Mexidol and other medications should be taken after consultation with a specialist.

Interaction and methods of drug administration

Mexidol interacts with most somatic drugs without causing any unwanted effects or inhibiting their action.

The use of this drug enhances the therapeutic effect of taking antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and drugs used to treat the brain in Parkinson's disease.

At the same time, Mexidol can reduce the toxic effects of the components of certain drugs on the body. The drug is taken orally, in the form of tablets, 2–3 times a day. The maximum dose is 6 tablets per day.

Treatment lasts from 6 days to 6 weeks, treatment is discontinued by gradually reducing the dosage used. The instructions for use accompanying the drug Mexidol do not indicate at what pressure its use is indicated.

The injective form of Mexidol is administered via a syringe or by drip.

In the first case, both intravenous and intramuscular administration are allowed, and these methods can be used in one course of treatment, combined with each other.

Jet and drip administration involves the use of sixteen milliliters of sodium chloride per 200 milligrams of the active substance.

It is undesirable to abruptly stop taking the drug. An indication for it can only be individual intolerance.

Video on the topic

Does the drug Mexidol lower blood pressure or not? What effect can be expected from taking it? Answers in the video:

In general, Mexidol is a modern drug characterized by a number of positive properties. First of all, it is worth noting its high medicinal effectiveness and wide application profile. In addition, this drug has no side effects and does not cause health problems even with long-term use.

Another undoubted advantage is the high variability of the effective combination of Mexidol with other somatic drugs. The active substances used do not cause addiction or allergic reactions, and the variety of forms of the drug and methods of its administration allow for effective treatment of various groups of patients.
