Lugol's solution in spray form is the correct application. The use of Lugol for the treatment of sore throat in children and adults

Treatment should be carried out comprehensively, and local therapy for pathology is mandatory - Lugol for sore throat helps get rid of pathogenic agents, has an anti-inflammatory effect and speeds up recovery.

Our body is called upon to protect several tonsils from pathogenic microbes: two palatine, two tubal, one lingual and pharyngeal. These six glands form the Pirogov ring - this is the first line of immune defense. The tonsils contain a large number of lymphocytes, which neutralize viruses and bacteria that enter the soft and loose tissue of this organ.

Viruses, bacteria, and fungi can be the culprits of acute tonsillitis. The key to successful treatment is to help the body quickly remove and destroy the pathogen. Lugol's solution, prescribed for angina, is effective against these aggressive agents.

Benefits of topical treatment for sore throat

So that an acute sore throat does not take you by surprise, at the first symptoms of a sore throat, doctors recommend starting treatment. The instructions note that Lugol for acute or chronic tonsillitis is a unique antiseptic, as it effectively affects absolutely all types of pathogens.

The drug is named after the scientist Auguste Lugol. A French dermatologist compiled the optimal proportion of components, which were designed to enhance and complement each other’s therapeutic effects.

Professor Auguste Lugol prepared a mixture of the following components:

  • 10% potassium iodide,
  • 5% pure iodine,
  • 85% water.

A French dermatologist used this remedy to treat skin rashes. This recipe was later improved by adding glycerin, which made it possible to use it for treating mucous membranes.

Lugol's solution with glycerin contains:

  • 1% iodine,
  • 2% potassium iodide,
  • 3% water,
  • 94% glycerin.

According to the instructions, when Lugol's solution is applied topically, molecular iodine is released from the solution, which has an antiseptic, local irritant and bactericidal effect on most pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Potassium iodide allows iodine to dissolve and be in suspension; when applied to an area of inflammation, it promotes deep penetration of medicinal components. To avoid burns to the oral mucosa, glycerin is present in the solution. It has a sweetish taste and softens inflamed tonsil tissue.

Methods of application

At the pharmacy you can buy Lugol with glycerin in two dosage forms:

  1. In bottles in the form of a solution of 10 milliliters,
  2. In the form of a spray of 100 milliliters.

The instructions indicate that to treat the throat you should take a sterile bandage, wrap it around your index finger, dip it in the product and lubricate the tonsils. In this mechanical way, all pus and plaque are removed. The used bandage should be thrown away and the procedure repeated again after a couple of hours.

To treat the pharynx in children, you can use tweezers or a wooden stick with a cotton swab. Ask the child to open his mouth, press his tongue with a spatula or the back of a spoon, insert tweezers with a cotton swab dipped in Lugol's solution with glycerin. Carefully treat the tonsils on one side and then on the other. Try not to touch the back of the throat so as not to cause the child to vomit.

The use of the spray is very convenient for children. This form of the drug allows for more precise dosing of the medicine. The instructions say that before injection you should hold your breath and spray the medicine evenly onto both tonsils. After sanitation, you should not eat or drink for 30 minutes. It is enough to thoroughly treat the tonsils 2-4 times a day, and after 2-3 days of complex therapy there will be a noticeable improvement in well-being.

Lugol's Disadvantages

There are negative aspects to the practice of using Lugol's solution with glycerin. The drug has a complex chemical composition, and an allergic reaction may occur to any of its components (especially iodine). The allergy is manifested by itching and redness of the skin, swelling of the pharynx, and the appearance of a rash. The most dangerous reactions are the development of bronchospasm and anaphylactic shock.

Thanks to iodine and glycerin, the mixture has a specific smell and taste. When applied to the mucous membranes, a burning and tingling sensation occurs, and sometimes dryness is noted (with frequent use).

Lugol's solution is quite thick - sometimes this property makes it difficult to treat the tonsils. ENT doctors warn that if there are purulent plugs in the tonsils (follicular tonsillitis), glycerin clogs them, aggravating the course of the pathological process. Therefore, the drug is recommended for the treatment of catarrhal tonsillitis. You can actively use it during the recovery period.

Lugol's spray can cause a gag reflex in children, and sometimes the medicine causes laryngospasm. According to the instructions, the aerosol is not used to treat children under one year of age.

When it gets on fabric, Lugol's solution quickly penetrates and leaves dark stains that cannot be washed off. When sanitizing a child, you should tie an apron or towel around the neck so as not to stain the clothes.

Side effects

Lugol's solution with glycerin may cause the following side effects:

  1. Iodism is poisoning of the body due to excessive intake of iodine. The pathological condition occurs extremely rarely when the application of Lugol's solution is abused for a long time. Manifested by drooling, acne, itching, tachycardia, sleep disturbance. Sometimes Quincke's edema occurs.
  2. An allergic reaction to iodine manifests itself immediately after contact with the medicine in the form of local redness, itching, burning, swelling of the tongue and larynx.
  3. Contact dermatitis occurs when it comes into contact with the skin during treatment of stomatitis or cracked lips.

Contraindications to the drug

The drug should not be used in the following conditions:

  • Persons with hypersensitivity to iodine;
  • For diseases of the thyroid gland: nodular goiter and thyrotoxicosis,
  • During pregnancy and lactation;
  • For hepatitis in the stage of decompensation and cirrhosis of the liver;
  • For chronic renal failure;
  • For dermatitis, pyoderma (pustular rashes on the skin of an infectious nature);
  • For acne.

Sore throat is an insidious infectious disease that can lead to serious complications. Lugol's solution is a universal antiseptic that should always be in your home medicine cabinet. An easy-to-use and very practical remedy will help relieve the unpleasant symptoms of tonsillitis and speed up recovery with complex treatment. Before using Lugol's solution, carefully read the instructions. If after three days of treatment you do not feel any improvement, you should consult your doctor to adjust your treatment.

Dosage form:  topical spray Compound:

active substance: iodine 12.5 mg;

Excipients: purified water 37.5 mg, glycerol 85% 1175 mg, potassium iodide 25 mg.

Description:

Transparent viscous liquid of red-brown color, with the odor of iodine.

Pharmacotherapeutic group:Antiseptic ATX:

D.08.A.G Iodine preparations

Pharmacodynamics:

Iodine-containing antiseptic. The main active ingredient is molecular, which has an antiseptic effect (bactericidal effect against gram-positive and gram-negative flora, as well as against pathogenic fungi and yeasts, staphylococcus is more resistant, however, with long-term use of the drug in 80% of cases, suppression of staphylococcal flora is noted, Pseudomonas aeruginosa is resistant) and locally irritating Effect. When applied to large surfaces of the skin, it has a resorptive effect: it actively affects metabolism, enhances dissimilation processes, participates in the synthesis of T3 and T4, and has a proteolytic effect.

Potassium iodide improves the dissolution of iodine in water.

Glycerol prevents fluid retention in inflamed tissues, reduces tissue swelling, and forms a protective film on the surface of the skin and mucous membranes.

The drug is low toxic.

Pharmacokinetics:

If accidentally swallowed, it is quickly absorbed. The absorbed part penetrates well into tissues and organs and accumulates in the tissues of the thyroid gland. It is excreted by the kidneys (mainly), to a lesser extent in feces and sweat. Penetrates into the milk of lactating women

Indications:

Infectious and inflammatory diseases of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity and pharynx in adults and children.

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to iodine or other components of the drug.

Carefully:

Use with caution in patients with decompensated liver and kidney diseases, thyrotoxicosis, and dermatitis herpetiformis.

Pregnancy and lactation:

The drug poses a potential danger to the fetus if used by women during the 2-3 trimester of pregnancy for more than 4 days.

Iodine passes into mother's milk and may potentially affect thyroid function in breastfed infants.

Directions for use and dosage:

The drug is applied topically 4-6 times a day to irrigate the mucous membrane of the oral cavity, pharynx, pharynx, spraying the spray with one press of the spray head.

The injection of this drug is targeted and the sprayer, depending on the disease, should be directed directly to the site of inflammation (see figure).

Do not allow the drug to get into your eyes. If this occurs, the eyes should be rinsed with plenty of water or sodium thiosulfate solution.

If you are using a new package of the medicinal product, remove the protective cap, put on the nebulizer head with tip and press the nebulizer head several times.

After using the drug, removing the nebulizer head and tip is not recommended for the following reasons:

It is quite difficult to remove the spray head with the tip (which prevents accidental leakage of the drug), there is a high risk of getting dirty during the removal process, and since the drug contains , these stains are difficult to remove;

Contact of the drug with a wet surface is undesirable - there is no need to rinse the tip from the inside (it is enough to wash the tip with hot water from the outside or wipe with an alcohol solution).

Side effects:

Allergic reactions.

With long-term use - the phenomena of "iodism": rhinitis, urticaria, angioedema, salivation, lacrimation, acne.

If this or any other side effect occurs when using the drug, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Overdose:

Symptoms: irritation of the upper respiratory tract (burn, laryngobronchospasm); if ingested - mucous membranes of the digestive tract, development of hemolysis, hemoglobinuria; lethal dose - about 3 g (about 6 bottles of spray).

Treatment: gastric lavage with 0.5% sodium thiosulfate solution, sodium bicarbonate solutions, 30% is administered intravenously - up to 300 ml.

Interaction:

Iodine is inactivated by sodium thiosulfate. The drug contained in the composition oxidizes metals, which can lead to damage to metal objects.

Pharmaceutically incompatible with essential oils and ammonia solutions.

An alkaline or acidic environment, the presence of fat, pus, and blood weaken the antiseptic activity.

If Lugol's spray is used orally, the effect of medications that suppress thyroid function may decrease, and thyroid function indicators may also change.

Iodine preparations can enhance the irritating effect of certain drugs (for example, acetylsalicylic acid) on the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract.

Special instructions:

Sunlight and temperatures above 40°C accelerate the breakdown of active iodine.

Release form/dosage:Topical spray, 12.5 mg/ml. Package:

50 ml in dark glass bottles, screwed on with a cap with a dispenser, complete with a sprayer and tip and instructions for medical use, placed in a cardboard pack.

To treat inflammation in the mouth and throat, a variety of local drugs are used, the action of which is based on the destruction of bacteria at the site of the disease and the removal of the inflammatory process. To achieve such results, both modern, well-advertised formulations and time-tested, well-known products can be used. Lugol spray is an antiseptic drug and is an improved form of a product that has long been known to everyone. Its use is possible for both children and adults, and the effectiveness will be high in any case.

Composition of the drug

The product is available in dark glass bottles with a dispenser in volumes of 25, 30, 50 and 60 milliliters. Lugol's action is based on the inclusion of molecular iodine in an amount of 1%. Auxiliary components of the composition are potassium iodide (necessary for dissolving iodine in water), purified water and glycerol. The substance has a rich red-brown color and a specific iodine aroma. The spray belongs to the group of low-toxic products.

What does Lugol's spray with glycerin help with?

The drug in question has a local irritating effect and also acts as an antiseptic, thereby destroying bacteria in the application area. Using the product in the form of a spray allows you to get a pronounced local effect, which is especially important for sore throat to combat unpleasant symptoms.

Lugol exhibits activity in both gram-positive and gram-negative environments. Regarding Staphylococcus aureus, the effect of the drug is not pronounced, however, with long-term use, a pronounced positive effect is observed (according to research data, in the vast majority of cases of treatment for staphylococcal tonsillitis, the result was positive). But iodine is not at all effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Glycerol in the composition acts as a means of preventing fluid retention in tissues, relieves swelling of the treated area, and also promotes the formation of a protective film on the mucous membrane.

When using the spray, there is no excessive absorption of the product through the skin and mucous membranes; negative effects can only occur if the product is accidentally swallowed in a large volume.

Indications for use for the throat

Based on the directions of activity of the drug, it is obvious that its use is advisable for various infectious and inflammatory processes localized in the oral cavity and pharynx. The effectiveness of the drug is high for purulent tonsillitis, but when an elevated temperature appears, its usefulness is lost. Also, the drug cannot be combined with thiosulfate, as it neutralizes iodine. The use of the spray is not recommended together with essential oils. The product has an exclusively local effect and therefore cannot act as the only method of therapy.

Instructions for use for children and adults

Before you start using a new bottle, you need to make a few presses with the sprayer into the air so that the liquid can rise through the tube and the sprayer will dispense a full dose. The patient needs to position the dispenser nozzle towards the affected area (it is advisable to achieve the most accurate contact with the affected areas) and perform the prescribed number of sprays. Usually 5 procedures are required during the day. In order to avoid getting the drug into the lower respiratory tract during spraying, you should hold your breath.

After the procedure, the tip should not be removed from the bottle again, as there is a risk of damaging the spray system and rendering the bottle functionally unusable. It is worth considering that storing the drug at temperatures above 40 degrees and in sunlight is prohibited, since under such conditions active iodine quickly decomposes.

How to spray on skin

The product can be used by analogy with a solution as part of the treatment of skin damage due to infection, as well as for the treatment of burns of both a chemical and thermal nature. The drug is sprayed several times onto the damaged area of the skin to achieve complete coverage of the affected area with the spray. Sometimes a more effective method is to create lotions from pieces of fabric pre-moistened with spray.

Applications for the treatment of sore throat, tonsillitis and laryngitis

For pharyngitis, sore throat, laryngitis and other types of inflammatory processes in the oral cavity and pharynx, it is most convenient to use a spray. The treatment is carried out one spray 4-6 times a day throughout the entire period of the disease - this dosage is standard and suitable for all patients, but it can be adjusted by the attending physician. It is worth understanding that this form of the drug has clear advantages:

  • precise dosing, which makes the use of the product harmless in childhood;
  • economical consumption;
  • high efficiency due to targeted local impact.

When irrigating the throat, you should be prepared for the fact that the drug has a specific aroma and taste, and can also provoke a slight burning sensation. That is why spraying sometimes provokes a gag reflex.

At what age can the medicine be used in children?

The instructions for use of the drug indicate that it can only be used after reaching the age of 5 years. This limitation is due to several factors. Thus, for children, especially under one year of age, the spray form of drug administration is dangerous due to the high probability of laryngospasm. Secondly, iodine easily penetrates into the general bloodstream and easily spreads throughout the body, which, given the small weight of the baby, increases the risk of developing an overdose reaction. In addition, Lugol is a rather active drug, and in children it can cause irritation and even burns of the mucous membranes. For children over 5 years old, the usual dosage is 1 injection three times a day.

Is it possible to swallow Lugol's spray?

Lugol's spray is intended for topical use, but given that it is used to treat the oral cavity, the possibility of ingestion is not excluded. It is worth understanding that a slight ingress of the composition into the digestive system, although undesirable, will not cause harm. Only ingestion of the product in large volumes, which can cause severe irritation and burns to the mucous membranes, is considered dangerous.

Lugol during pregnancy and breastfeeding

The instructions for the drug clearly indicate that its use may pose a potential danger to the developing fetus, but only if it is used by the expectant mother in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy and for a period exceeding 4 days. The local effect of the drug makes it possible for short-term use in early pregnancy.

As for breastfeeding, you will have to stop using Lugol. Iodine (especially when dosages are exceeded) passes into breast milk and can potentially affect the baby's thyroid function.

Overdose and side effects

Considering the specificity of the form of the drug in question and the experience of its use by patients, an overdose situation is unlikely. But if the drug accidentally enters the body in large quantities, unpleasant consequences may occur:

  • severe irritation of the respiratory tract, which threatens chemical burns and the development of spasms;
  • upon penetration into the digestive tract, severe irritation of the mucous membranes occurs and disruption of the thyroid gland may occur.

Overdose is treated with the standard method - gastric lavage or intravenous administration of an iodine neutralizer (sodium thiosulfate).

Long-term use also threatens the development of side effects from the drug, namely an allergic reaction. It can manifest itself as a skin rash, runny nose, swelling of the respiratory tract, and increased production of tears and saliva. If you have any of the symptoms listed above, it is recommended to immediately seek help from a doctor.

Contraindications

The first point in contraindications to the spray is individual intolerance to products with iodine. Restrictions also include:

  • kidney and liver diseases;
  • dermatitis due to herpes;
  • disorders of the thyroid gland.

The use of the product on the skin is prohibited in the presence of acne, boils and urticaria.

Analogs

Lugol's spray is many times more expensive than a simple solution, but its price still remains affordable for most patients, especially compared to other remedies prescribed for sore throat. The spray is produced by various companies, and the product itself remains completely replaceable. Thus, on the shelves of pharmacies you can find drugs produced by Lekar (Russia), Valensis (Lithuania), Vialine from IPOK cosmetics (Russia), etc.

Lugol has no analogues in composition, so we can single out only a few products that can also be used for infections of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat as antiseptics: Adjisept, Vokasept, Hexoral, Rinza, AngiSept, Hepilor, etc.

Latin name: Lugol
ATX code: R02AA20
Active substance: Iodine
Manufacturer: Esko-Farm,
Tula Pharmaceutical Factory, Russia
Conditions for dispensing from a pharmacy: Over the counter

Lugol is an antiseptic based on molecular iodine. The drug can be used to treat infectious and inflammatory diseases by irrigating or lubricating the mucous membranes of the mouth, pharynx, and larynx.

Indications for use

Lugol is used internally, externally and locally.

External use of the drug:

  • Treatment of injuries and wound surfaces
  • Infectious and inflammatory diseases of the skin
  • Myalia.

Local use of an antiseptic is possible when:

  • Skin ulcerations
  • Inflammation of the middle ear (purulent)
  • Rhinitis atrophic
  • Purulent sore throat
  • Burns (chemical, thermal) of mild or moderate severity
  • Infected burn surfaces
  • Tonsillitis (chronic form).

Taking the drug orally is indicated in the following cases:

  • Tertiary syphilis
  • Atherosclerosis (preventive measures and therapeutic therapy).

Compound

In one milliliter of Lugol Vialine (spray) the mass fraction of iodine is 12.5 ml. The auxiliary components of the antiseptic include:

  • Glycerol
  • Sea salt
  • Potassium iodide
  • Sodium saccharinate
  • Laminaria extract
  • Triclosan.

Lugol's solution contains the active substance iodine, the mass fraction of which in 100 g is 1 g. Lugol's solution also contains additional components:

  • Potassium iodide
  • Glycerol.

Medicinal properties

Molecular iodine, which is the main component of two dosage forms, of this product has a local irritating effect, while also performing the functions of an antiseptic. Iodine has a detrimental effect on gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, and is active against staphylococcus and pseudomonads. When treating large areas of the skin, a resorptive effect of the active component of Lugol's is observed, which is explained by the participation of iodine in the processes of synthesis of the hormones T3 and T4. Potassium iodide enhances the effect of the main component on the affected mucous membranes and ensures its rapid solubility in water. Glycerin and glycerol have emollient properties.

If all the rules for using an antiseptic are followed, as recommended in the instructions, then resorption of the main component of the drug through the skin can be excluded. During contact with mucous membranes, molecular iodine is approximately 30% converted into iodides. When Lugol is taken orally, iodine is completely absorbed with further accumulation in the thyroid gland. The process of excretion of metabolites is carried out by the kidneys, intestines, and sweat glands. During breastfeeding, the components of the drug partially penetrate into breast milk.

Lugol's solution

Price: 14-66 rub.

Lugol's with glycerin has a characteristic odor, as well as a rich yellowish or slightly brownish color. The drug is available in 25 ml dark glass bottles; instructions are included with the drug.

Mode of application

Before use, you should moisten a cotton swab with the solution, and then carefully treat the throat mucosa by wiping once or twice throughout the day. It is worth considering that the use of this dosage form of Lugol is recommended for children from the age of twelve. This is explained by the fact that there is a high risk of “burning” the mucous membranes of the larynx and pharynx, despite the emollient components present in the solution.

Lugol is usually prescribed for angina that occurs without complications or in a purulent form, as well as for tonsillitis.

Spray Lugol

Price: 78-166 rub.

Lugol in the form of a spray with 1% or 1.25% iodine content is available in glass bottles with a capacity of 45 ml. The contents of each bottle are a solution that has a uniform dark yellow color and a characteristic iodine aroma. The cardboard package contains a spray bottle and instructions.

Instructions for using the spray

The drug in the form of a spray is intended for irrigation procedures of the mucous membranes of the pharynx; the frequency of use varies depending on the nature of the disease and is 2-6 times over 24 hours.

Lugol is prescribed for sore throat (including purulent), as well as other infectious diseases of the ENT organs: stomatitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis.

For children over 5 years old: method of application

The mucous membranes of the throat, as well as the oral cavity, can be irrigated 4 to 6 times a day by pressing on the spray bottle. When injecting the solution into the throat, you need to hold your breath for a few seconds, which will ensure uniform distribution of the drug over the entire surface of the mucous membrane of the pharynx and oral cavity.

Lugol is recommended for children over 5 years of age. The method and frequency of use for purulent sore throat is determined individually, taking into account the general picture of the course of the disease. The drug is not prescribed to children under one year of age, since iodine is absorbed quite quickly and enters the general bloodstream, which undoubtedly affects the functioning of the thyroid gland, as well as the overall development of the baby.

Thanks to the mild bactericidal effect of the drug's components, it is possible to quickly get rid of the painful sensations of purulent sore throat that numb the throat. Lugol is prescribed for children in the form of a spray, since this form of the drug is convenient to use; irrigation of the throat mucosa can be carried out in just a few seconds.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding

The spray, as well as Lugol's solution, is contraindicated for pregnant women.

The possibility of using and the method of using the medicine for hepatitis B should be checked with your doctor. When prescribing the drug during lactation, it is worth considering that iodine in small quantities passes into breast milk, and, therefore, affects the child’s body. You can use Lugol's solution or a spray for hepatitis B only if there are serious indications, when the benefits to the mother's body significantly outweigh the possible risks to the child.

Contraindications

The use of the medicine is contraindicated when:

  • Excessive sensitivity to iodine
  • Serious pathologies of the kidneys and liver.

Precautionary measures

With extreme caution, the medicine is prescribed to children under 12 years of age who suffer from dermatitis herpeformis, as well as hyperthyroidism.

During lactation, it is worthwhile to carry out a short course of drug therapy. This method of treatment will help eliminate thyroid dysfunction in a breastfed baby.

Cross-drug interactions

The simultaneous use of sodium thiosulfate inactivates Lugol's solution. The antibacterial properties of a substance such as iodine decrease upon contact with an acidic and alkaline environment, blood, fat or pus.

You should not take Lugol with essential oils or ammonia solution.

Side effects

During treatment, signs of iodism may develop, namely:

  • Skin rash similar to urticaria
  • Increased salivation
  • Rhinitis
  • Tearing
  • Excessive dry skin
  • Erythema and mild burning
  • Bronchospasm or Quincke's edema
  • Vomiting, severe nausea
  • Local redness of the skin.

Overdose

A sign of an overdose of Lugol is irritation of the respiratory system, which is manifested by the presence of a burn, the development of bronchospasm or laryngospasm. If the drug is ingested, symptoms of hemoglobinuria or hemolysis may be observed.

The lethal dosage of the solution is 300 ml, which corresponds to 3 g of iodine.

For the listed symptoms, intravenous 30% sodium thiosulfate solution is indicated along with gastric lavage procedures using sodium bicarbonate solution.

Conditions and shelf life

Lugol's solution must be stored in a place protected from direct sunlight, at a temperature of 8-15 C. The medication is valid for 3 years from the date of manufacture.

Analogs

Lugol is an antiseptic that is used to treat inflammatory and infectious diseases of the nasal and oral cavities, as well as the skin. Lugol's solution with glycerin is often used to treat many ailments.

Composition and release form

The drug is produced in liquid form (solution) and aerosol in plastic or glass bottles of 15–100 grams. Sometimes manufacturers place the drug in drop bottles, which are equipped with additional devices for ease of use.

Excipients:

  • potassium iodide;
  • glycerol;
  • purified water.

The product is made from water without adding alcohol-containing liquids. It has a brown color with the smell and taste of iodine. The active ingredient in Lugol's composition is iodine.

Pharmacological actions

Molecular iodine has a local irritant and antiseptic effect. It has an antibacterial effect against gram-negative and gram-positive flora, and also affects pathogenic fungi. With long-term use, approximately 85% of the staphylococcal flora is suppressed. If the product is used to treat extensive skin lesions, then iodine has a resorptive effect and takes part in the synthesis of T3 and T4.

Effect of the drug

The therapeutic effect is achieved due to the fact that iodine affects pathogenic microorganisms that act as pathogens. Also, the main component (iodine) improves wound healing, and in combination with glycerin, it also softens the skin. Potassium iodide enhances the properties of the main component.

Lugol's Nose and Throat Remedy reduces the impact of germs, harmful microorganisms and improves wound healing, and can also prevent swelling of the throat or respiratory tract. This is due to the fact that glycerol prevents the retention of excess fluid in the mucous membrane.

Interaction with other drugs

Iodine is inactivated by sodium thiosulfate, so taking products containing this element is prohibited.

Iodine is capable of oxidizing metals, so this can lead to damage to metal elements (surgical plates, screws). In alkaline and acidic environments, the activity of the drug is weakened.

Side effects

When using the drug, some side effects may occur, these include:

  • skin irritation;
  • rash;
  • redness;
  • hives;
  • Quincke's edema;
  • rhinitis;
  • acne;
  • allergy;
  • burns of mucous membranes;
  • malfunction of the thyroid gland.

If you notice the above manifestations, you should consult a doctor to adjust your treatment and stop using the spray or Lugol’s solution with glycerin.

Use of the drug

Indications for use

The drug is used to treat certain diseases, these include:

  • tonsillitis;
  • angina;
  • stomatitis;
  • otitis media of purulent type;
  • atrophic type rhinitis;
  • wounds affected by infection;
  • thermal and chemical burns;
  • atherosclerosis;
  • trophic type ulcers.

It should be remembered that Lugol is a remedy for the complex treatment of diseases, since with monotherapy it is unable to cope with the disease on its own. It destroys infections when used locally and externally, which helps prevent their development.

Contraindications for use

The drug Lugol is prohibited from taking for certain diseases and during certain periods, these include:

  • pregnancy;
  • lactation;
  • intolerance to iodine and other components;
  • tuberculosis of various forms.

This remedy should be used with caution by people suffering from diseases of the heart and vascular system. This is due to the fact that iodine affects the thyroid gland and, if the dosage is exceeded, can cause malfunctions in its functioning. The use of the product may be hazardous to health.

Before you start using it, you need to take some steps, these include:

  • Carefully unpack the package and remove the bottle;
  • shake the bottle of medicine;
  • for an aerosol, put on a spray bottle;
  • Hold your breath when applying;
  • After application, it is forbidden to eat or eat for 30–40 minutes.

After using the product, always close the bottle tightly or do not remove the nozzle. This will prevent the drug from spoiling and drying out.

Important: you should not apply a lot of medicine to the mucous membrane at one time. When you swallow saliva, the product is evenly distributed throughout it.

Instructions for use for adults

The method of application and dosage depend on the type of product.

  1. Solution. Soak a cotton swab or cotton swab in the solution and treat the necessary areas of the mucous surface of the oral or nasal cavity. If the bottle with the solution has a brush, then apply the product with it. It should only be used by one person. The solution can be used every 3 or 4 hours.
  2. Aerosol. To apply the drug, shake the bottle and spray the product onto the affected mucous membranes. You can use the product 2–4 times a day, 1–2 injections.

Only a doctor can prescribe the exact number of uses in 24 hours.

Instructions for use for children

Application methods for children and adults are practically the same, but 2 points should be taken into account.

  1. Vomiting reflex. In children, especially under the age of 3, lubricating the throat triggers the gag reflex. For this reason, you should not lubricate distant, deep areas. The drug must be applied to the tonsils, and then the product will be distributed with saliva.
  2. Irritation. Lugol's with glycerin can cause irritation of the mucous membrane of the mouth or nose. This manifests itself as a tingling or mild burning sensation. During the first session of use, you should use a small amount of medication, this will help avoid irritation.

The drug can be applied to children 4-5 times in 24 hours; if necessary, the doctor will adjust the number of applications.

Important: if a child is unable to hold his breath when applying the drug, then it is prohibited to use it.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

When using this drug, the thyroid gland is affected and leads to disruptions and malfunctions of its functioning. Because of this, the levels of lipids, proteins and hormones may decrease or increase. This can be dangerous during pregnancy. Also, with a high concentration of iodine in the mother’s body, it will be passed on to the child, which, in turn, can provoke disturbances in psychophysical development in the future. Therefore, doctors do not recommend using Lugol during this period of life.

Important: the instructions for use contain not only rules of use, but also side effects, so before starting use you should consult your doctor.

Overdose

If the use of the drug exceeds the permissible daily dose, the patient may develop hypersecretion of the thyroid gland.

special instructions
