However, as our British colleagues report, several decades ago they tried to “treat” dogs with dark beer in the hope that this would have a positive effect on their health. Alas!

What is the problem? People drink alcohol for many reasons, which may not make sense to mention again. Let’s focus on one thing: what happens if you “overdo it,” that is, take a heavy dose of alcohol? That's right: severe alcohol intoxication of the body will begin, which only a narcologist can remove. It is also possible to experience an unpleasant condition called a hangover, which, in turn, can also be very acute. Let's go further: what if you drink alcohol constantly, day after day? The answer is clear - a terrible disease called alcoholism will develop. Faithful companions of alcoholism are liver disease, kidney disease, gout and much more. The body is rapidly deteriorating, and stopping this process is not at all easy: the prospect of an imminent fatal outcome is taking on real shape.

The culprit is a substance called ethanol. In small doses it can cause the familiar feeling of mild euphoria, in large doses it can lead to severe addiction.

You probably already realized that even the smallest portion of alcohol can cause severe poisoning in dogs. Let us say unequivocally: under no circumstances should a dog be exposed to the taste of alcohol!

What dose of alcohol is dangerous for dogs? Let's repeat what was said above: protect your pet from any alcoholic beverages. However, in life sometimes completely unpredictable collisions occur. Therefore, for a general understanding, let us note: if, quite by accident, your large breed dog licks up a puddle of weak beer that has formed on the floor, then its body will most likely survive. Although it is possible that the animal will soon suffer from a hangover. As for other cases - your dog is an indoor or decorative breed, a drink stronger than beer, etc., has entered the pet’s body - then even death is possible. In the best case scenario, the animal will be seriously poisoned.

What are the symptoms of alcohol poisoning in dogs? If you have any suspicions that your four-legged friend might have consumed “something wrong,” then pay attention to the following symptoms.

Thus, profuse vomiting develops several hours after drinking alcohol. The dog may become confused, stagger, or lose orientation in space. Immediately after drinking alcohol, hyperactivity is usually observed. There is no attention, reactions to current events are slow. Fainting and loss of control over your own body are possible. Shortness of breath, excessive salivation and drooling. Next, dehydration occurs, accompanied by increased thirst. Diarrhea and stool changes are possible. In the most severe cases, a coma is possible, from which the animal may not get out.

What should be done? The help of a specialist is, of course, necessary. Call the veterinarian immediately, outline the situation, and take further actions based on his advice. For example, the veterinarian may ask you to induce vomiting. This helps, but at the very first stages of poisoning. You should not induce vomiting at home without the command of a veterinarian.

If a lot of alcohol has entered the dog’s body, there is no place for calls - immediately take the animal to the clinic. He can only be helped in a hospital setting. At the same time, ordinary alcoholic drinks, which are presented in abundance on the shelves of our stores, are also popular among animals. Often, the owner, purchasing alcohol for himself, generously treats his (or other people’s) pets with it. Often the person himself at this moment is not aware of what he is doing. However, drinking drinks for three with your own dog and cat can end very, very sadly for the whole company.

Everything is like people

While studying the problem of alcoholism, scientists tested the effects of alcoholic beverages on rats and mice. The results of the experiments strongly resonate with human behavior. Thus, it turned out that more impressionable animals drink more than their phlegmatic counterparts, and young animals are more willing to reach for an interesting delicacy.

After a long “alcohol course,” the rats remembered what time the “party” would be and during this period they became restless. If alcohol was not given out as scheduled, the pets became nervous and even began to sort things out among themselves.

But seriously?

These funny cases can be listed endlessly, however, despite all the seeming fun, alcohol addiction is an extremely serious problem for pets.

Quickly addictive. A pet only needs to try alcohol once to become addicted. There are cases when animals themselves came up with sophisticated ways to obtain alcohol - for example, they dipped their tail into a barrel over and over again and then licked it. In addition, some of them know how to independently “make mash” from pasture raw materials, dragging ripened fruits into a pit and waiting for them to reach the desired state.

Health problems. Constant consumption of alcoholic beverages entails not only inappropriate behavior and poor health of the animal, but also the acquisition of serious diseases. The main burden falls, of course, on the liver, which, in addition to drinking alcohol, must protect the body from a variety of unpleasant influences. As a result, alcohol abuse can result in a terrible diagnosis - cirrhosis of the liver. We should also not forget that drinking alcohol can have a detrimental effect on the coordination of movements and reaction speed of the animal.

Impossibility of treatment. Veterinarians categorically prohibit pet owners from treating their pets to alcoholic beverages at least once. Our little brothers do not have immunity to alcohol, but it is almost impossible to cure such a patient. The only way is to completely eliminate the dependent animal’s contact with such treats by putting it on a so-called non-alcoholic diet. At the same time, no one can guarantee a positive result of the “treatment”: everything depends on the state of health of the animal, its individual characteristics, etc.

For example, there was a decree according to which the king’s subjects were strictly forbidden to drink alcohol or smoke in the company of game birds.
