Corvalol: components, how it works, instructions for use, to whom it is indicated, contraindications.

Corvalol in the form of release - tablets and drops - has a sedative, antiseptic, choleretic, vasodilating effect. The active component is phenobarbital, which irritates the cold receptors of the oral mucosa and gastrointestinal tract, dilates the blood vessels of the heart and brain, eliminates signs of flatulence, and enhances intestinal peristalsis.

Like any medicine, Corvalol has side effects, despite being sold in pharmacies without a doctor's prescription. Before using the tincture, it is important to read the instructions, take into account the indications, contraindications and side effects. It is best to consult your doctor first.

Side effects of Corvalol

The composition (drops, tablets) of Corvalol contains phenobarbital, which forms mental dependence if taken constantly and in large doses. In particular, the active ingredient is bromine, which in case of overdose leads to:

  • confusion;
  • impaired coordination of movements;
  • tendency to depression, panic attacks;
  • inhibition of central nervous system function;
  • dizziness;
  • drowsiness;
  • bradycardia;
  • nausea, vomiting;
  • stomach pain;
  • slowing heart rate;
  • allergies, skin rashes;
  • bowel disorder.

It is phenobarbital that is addictive due to constant, long-term use, so the effect as a sleeping pill will gradually decrease. But withdrawal syndrome in case of abrupt cessation of taking the drug may well lead to overexcitation, hallucinations, and excessive anxiety.

Long-term treatment with Corvalol leads not only to addiction, but also to the accumulation of metabolites in the body, the development of hypotension, and pulse disturbances, when in severe cases resuscitation and disinfection intoxication therapy are no longer necessary.

REFERENCE! Corvalol can sharply lower blood pressure, which is dangerous for hypertensive patients suffering from high blood pressure. It is not recommended to take the medicine together with other antiarrhythmic, antihypertensive, anticonvulsant, or steroid drugs. The effect may be unexpected and unfortunate.

Taking Corvalol with alcohol is incompatible, which will lead to toxic effects on the body, accumulation of ethanol in the blood, and side effects.

Side effects in children

According to the instructions, the use of the drug by children under 18 years of age is prohibited. Only in extreme cases is it possible for the attending physician to prescribe no more than 15 drops once a day, taking into account the weight and age of the child. In this case, the treatment process must be carried out under full control in order to avoid the negative impact of the alcohol-containing composition on the fragile child’s body.

It is forbidden for pregnant women to take Corvalol during lactation. The active component can have a teratogenic effect on the fetus and lead to congenital anomalies in the structure of internal organs and deformity of anatomical structures in infants at birth.

The medicine can have a negative impact on the development of the child and lead to suppression of the nervous system. In a baby in the first days of life, it can provoke increased bleeding.

If a pregnant mother abuses this drug in the 3rd trimester, then convulsions and excessive excitability in infants may occur in the first weeks of life. Women in an interesting situation are not recommended to take Corvalol in order to calm their nerves and it is better to give preference to other, safer and more effective sedatives.

Main side effects in children:

  • excessive excitability;
  • convulsions;
  • bleeding;
  • deterioration of blood clotting due to phenobarbital suppression of the nervous system.

Indications for use

Corvalol is a vasodilator, sedative and sedative. However, it cannot be considered a medicine, because it is impossible to cure any internal disease with just one drug. Corvalol helps minimize nervous disorders, but will not relieve renal colic, insomnia, and heart disease (myocardial infarction, angina). These are cheap drops indicated for use to minimize unpleasant symptoms or as an adjuvant in addition to the main treatment. Main indications for use:

  • increased heart rate;
  • signs of tachycardia;
  • insomnia;
  • spasms of coronary vessels;
  • irritability;
  • hypertension at the initial stage;
  • vegetative-vascular dystonia for the purpose of complex therapy;
  • spasms in the intestines.

The drug will help you quickly calm down and fall asleep, but will not relieve severe neuroses or progressive depression.

IMPORTANT! Corvalol is not a cure for heart disease and will not help hypertensive patients normalize their blood pressure. The remedy can have only a temporary effect when discomfort appears in the heart area. This medicine is not prescribed as a drug for the treatment of diseases, therefore abuse of dosages and frequency of use is not recommended.

Contraindications to the use of Corvalol

The drug is contraindicated if:

  • low blood pressure;
  • heart failure;
  • heart disease;
  • impaired renal and liver function;
  • individual intolerance;
  • allergy to lactose;
  • epilepsy;
  • traumatic brain injury;
  • convulsive syndrome;
  • alcohol addiction;
  • diabetes.

It is not advisable to take the medicine for children under 18 years of age and for pregnant women in the 1st trimester up to 12-14 weeks and in later stages. Also during lactation.

IMPORTANT! In case of heart failure, the medicine can cause myocardial infarction, so for hypertensive patients it is better to choose other drugs for treatment on the recommendation of a doctor.

Actions in case of overdose

If you still cannot avoid an overdose of Corvalol, then it is important to be able to provide timely first aid and eliminate signs of intoxication and remove toxic substances from the body. This means that you need to rinse your stomach, drink 2-3 glasses of clean water, take a sorbent (Smecta, Enterosgel, Filtrum, activated carbon). You can press on the root of the tongue, thereby causing a gag reflex.

The main thing is to quickly remove excess Corvalol from the body. If lethargic sleep, coma, or convulsions occur, you should call an ambulance immediately.

Doctors evaluate cases of overdose as mild, moderate, or severe. If mild signs of poisoning appear: drowsiness, confusion, dizziness, apathy, headache and lethargy, then it is important to stop taking the drug in time. If the patient continues to take Corvalol in increased doses, the condition may transition to moderate severity with the appearance of muscle spasms, convulsions, and vascular collapse. If poisoning reaches a severe stage, the patient may fall into a coma, when there is a threat of death and if timely emergency assistance is not provided, then everything can end badly.

Release form: Liquid dosage forms. Drops for oral use.

General characteristics. Compound:

Active ingredients: a-bromoisovaleric acid ethyl ester, phenobarbital, mint oil;

1 ml of solution (26 drops) contains ethyl ester of a-bromoisovaleric acid in terms of 100% substance 20 mg, phenobarbital 18.26 mg, peppermint oil 1.42 mg;

excipients: stabilizer, ethanol (96%), purified water.

Pharmacological properties:

Corvalol® is a sedative and antispasmodic drug, the effect of which is determined by its constituent components.

Ethyl ester of α-bromoisovaleric acid has a reflex sedative and antispasmodic effect due to irritation mainly of the receptors of the oral cavity and nasopharynx, a decrease in reflex excitability in the central parts of the nervous system and an increase in inhibition in the neurons of the cortex and subcortical structures of the brain, as well as a decrease in the activity of the central vasomotor centers and a direct local antispasmodic effect on vascular smooth muscle.

Phenobarbital suppresses the activating influences of the centers of the reticular formation of the midbrain and medulla oblongata on the cerebral cortex, thereby reducing the flow of exciting influences on the cerebral cortex and subcortical structures. A decrease in activating influences causes, depending on the dose, sedative, tranquilizing or hypnotic effects. Corvalol® reduces the stimulating effects on the vasomotor centers, coronary and peripheral vessels, lowering total blood pressure, relieving and preventing vascular spasms, especially cardiac ones.

Peppermint oil contains a large amount of essential oils, including about 50% menthol and 4-9% menthol esters. They are able to irritate the “cold” receptors of the oral cavity and reflexively dilate mainly the vessels of the heart and brain, relieving spasms of smooth muscles, causing a calming and mild choleretic effect. Peppermint oil has an antiseptic, antispasmodic effect, and the ability to eliminate symptoms. By irritating the receptors of the mucous membrane of the stomach and intestines, it enhances intestinal motility.

When taken orally, absorption begins in the sublingual area, the bioavailability of the components is high (about 60-80%). The effect develops especially quickly (after 5-10 minutes) when held in the mouth (sublingual absorption) or taken on a piece of sugar. The action develops after 15-45 minutes and lasts for 3-6 hours. In individuals who have previously taken barbituric acid preparations, the duration of action is reduced due to accelerated metabolism of phenobarbital in the liver, where barbiturates cause enzyme induction. In elderly people and in patients with liver cirrhosis, the metabolism of Corvalol® is reduced, so their half-life is prolonged, which requires the need to reduce the dose and lengthen the intervals between doses of the drug.

Indications for use:

Neuroses with increased irritability;
insomnia;
in complex therapy and vegetative-vascular dystonia;
mildly expressed spasms of the coronary vessels;
intestinal spasms (as an antispasmodic drug).

Important! Get to know the treatment

Directions for use and dosage:

Corvalol® is taken orally, regardless of meals, 2-3 times a day, 15-30 drops with water or on a lump of sugar. If necessary (severe tachycardia and spasm of coronary vessels), the single dose can be increased to 40-50 drops.

The duration of use of the drug is determined by the doctor depending on the clinical effect and tolerability of the drug.

Features of application:

Use during pregnancy and lactation.

Do not use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

The ability to influence the reaction rate when driving a vehicle or working with other mechanisms.

The drug contains 58 vol.% alcohol, as well as phenobarbital, which can cause impairment of coordination and speed of psychomotor reactions, so when taking the drug, people who work with machinery, drivers of vehicles, etc. should be careful.

Children. There is no experience of use for the treatment of children.

Side effects:

Corvalol® is generally well tolerated. In some cases, side effects may occur:

from the digestive tract: discomfort in the stomach and intestines;

from the nervous system: drowsiness, mild, decreased concentration;

from the immune system: allergic reactions;

from the cardiovascular system: slow heart rate.

These phenomena are eliminated by reducing the dose.

With prolonged use, dependence on the drug and bromism may occur. Symptoms: depression of the central nervous system, apathy, rhinitis, loss of coordination, confusion.

Interaction with other drugs:

Drugs with central inhibitory action enhance the effect of Corvalol®. The presence of phenobarbital in the drug may induce liver enzymes, and this makes its simultaneous use with medications that are metabolized in the liver (coumarin derivatives, griseofulvin, glucocorticoids, oral contraceptives) undesirable, since their effectiveness will be reduced as a result of a higher level of metabolism. Corvalol® enhances the effect of local anesthetics, analgesics and hypnotics, this is due to the content of barbituric acid derivatives.

When used simultaneously with valproic acid, its effect is enhanced.

When used simultaneously with methotrexate, its toxic effect increases.

Alcohol enhances the effect of the drug and its toxicity.

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, bromine;

Severe liver and/or kidney dysfunction;

Pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Necessary safety precautions for use

The simultaneous consumption of alcoholic beverages should be avoided.

The drug should be prescribed with caution.

Overdose:

Overdose is possible with frequent or long-term use of the drug, which is associated with the accumulation of its components. Long-term and constant use causes addiction. Abruptly stopping the drug may cause withdrawal symptoms.

Symptoms of overdose: depression of the central nervous system, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, even deep sleep. In severe cases of poisoning - respiratory failure, tachycardia, decreased blood pressure, coma.

Treatment: symptomatic.

Corvalol is a sedative that is widely used in our country, but it is prohibited for use in Europe and the USA. The fact is that the drug contains phenobarbital, as well as a toxic bromine-containing component. Before drinking Corvalol, you need to consider its beneficial qualities, what harm the medicine causes, as well as the features of its use. All information about Corvalol can be found in the instructions for use.

Despite the fact that the drug has a good sedative effect, it cannot always be used. The fact is that it is capable of causing serious adverse reactions, causing addiction, as well as neurological disorders and withdrawal symptoms. Before you start using this product, you must carefully read the instructions and consult your doctor.

The presented medicine is a combination medicine, since it contains not only synthetic, but also herbal components. That is why it is used to combat various neurological pathologies, hypertension, and sleep disorders. Corvalol contains the following substances:

  1. Phenobarbital. Its main effect is to inhibit the transmission of excitation impulses in the cerebral cortex. It has a calming effect and also produces a hypnotic effect. The disadvantage of this substance is that it causes severe drowsiness and also reduces reaction speed. The benefits and harms of Corvalol are obvious. Despite the fact that the medicine produces a good sedative effect, there is also the other side of the coin - drowsiness and lethargy.
  2. Ethyl bromizovalerianate acts on the receptors of the oral cavity, as well as the pharynx. It is able to reduce the excitability of the nervous system, produces an inhibitory effect on the subcortex and cerebral cortex, and has a sedative and antispasmodic effect. If you take too much Corvalol, it has a hypnotic effect.
  3. Peppermint leaf oil helps dilate blood vessels, and also has an antispasmodic effect, enhances intestinal activity, so a person is less likely to experience bloating.

You can buy Corvalol in drops or tablets. The liquid product is sold in the form of an alcohol solution of 25 or 50 ml in a dark bottle. The tablets are produced in blisters of 10 pieces. A pack may contain 1, 3, 5 plates. The cost of the drug ranges from 9 to 120 rubles.

The effect of Corvalol occurs within 10 to 30 minutes. Absorption of the active components occurs already in the oral cavity. The bioavailability of the drug is 80%. The therapeutic effect of the product lasts for 3 – 6 hours. The properties of Corvalol indicate its high effectiveness, but a person can get used to it. Therefore, you have to increase the dosage all the time, which is harmful to the body.

Indications, contraindications and side effects

Since many patients try to increase their consumption of the drug over time, they may experience an overdose of Corvalol. Before you start taking such a medicine, you need to consider its indications and contraindications. It is allowed to drink drops for the following diseases:

  • neurosis with increased irritability;
  • vegetative-vascular dystonia;
  • hypertensive syndrome;
  • sleep disturbance or its complete absence (this indication for the use of Corvalol makes the drug very popular among middle-aged patients);
  • tachycardia, as well as spasms of coronary vessels;
  • intestinal pathologies caused by neurovegetative disorders;
  • hypochondriacal syndrome;
  • vegetative lability.

Despite the composition of Corvalol, it cannot be considered a complete medicine that can overcome any disease. It can only eliminate the symptoms of a particular disorder. That is, medicine is not able to eliminate the causes.

What Corvalol helps with is already clear. However, there are certain contraindications to its use. They are associated with the presence of phenobarbital, bromine, and ethanol in the composition of the drugs. The following contraindications for use can be identified:

  • individual intolerance to some components of the drug;
  • serious impairment of kidney and liver function;
  • pregnancy period, as well as breastfeeding the baby;
  • children under 18 years of age;
  • alcoholism;
  • lactase deficiency (possible Corvalol poisoning);
  • convulsive symptom, as well as seizures of epilepsy;
  • traumatic brain injury, consequences of concussion;
  • severe form of chronic heart failure;
  • myocardial infarction in the acute stage;
  • severe arterial hypotension;
  • obstructive syndrome;
  • diabetes;
  • myasthenia gravis.

Before taking the drug, you need to understand that an overdose of Corvalol is dangerous. In general, the medicine can have the following side effects:

  1. Significant digestive disorders: constipation, nausea, vomiting, liver dysfunction, heaviness in the epigastric region.
  2. Problems with the activity of the nervous system: general weakness, poor coordination of movements, inhibition of reactions, ataxia.
  3. Angioedema (that's why Corvalol is dangerous).
  4. Skin rash as a result of an allergic reaction.
  5. Violation of blood composition.
  6. Breathing problems.
  7. Bradycardia, arterial hypotension.
  8. Conjunctivitis.
  9. Rhinitis.
  10. Depressive state.
  11. Increased lacrimation.
  12. Acne.
  13. Confusion.

If the patient develops such symptoms, then it is necessary to stop using Corvalol or reduce its dose.

How to use the product correctly?

The instructions for using Corvalol are quite simple, but not everyone follows them, considering the product absolutely safe. This is not entirely true. You should take Corvalol as follows:

  1. The drops are usually mixed with 50 ml of water. You can also drip the product onto sugar. Take the medicine half an hour to an hour before meals. How many drops of Corvalol should be used is determined by the attending physician. You should not use the product yourself. The standard dosage of the drug is 15 – 30 drops. If the patient is diagnosed with severe tachycardia, the amount of the drug may be greater. The doctor recommends taking 40–50 drops at a time. The course of therapy is no more than 2 weeks, the frequency of administration is up to 3 times a day. For the treatment of children, no more than 15 drops are used.
  2. Tablets are prescribed only to adults. The dosage of Corvalol is also prescribed by the doctor. Usually the medicine is taken 2 to 3 times a day.

The drug should be stored out of the reach of children. The temperature should not be higher than 25 degrees. Corvalol drops have a shelf life of 3 years.

Overdose, analogues and drug interactions

An overdose of Corvalol occurs extremely rarely. However, if this happens, the following symptoms are possible:

  • severe decrease in pressure;
  • nystagmus;
  • depression of the functionality of the nervous system;
  • rhinitis;
  • diathesis (hemorrhagic);
  • ataxia;
  • problems with coordination of movements.

It is already known whether Corvalol is harmful. However, you also need to find out how this drug interacts with other medications. For example, you should not take the drug together with other sedative tablets. These medications enhance each other's effects.

It is also important to know whether you can drink Corvalol with alcohol. Naturally, this cannot be done. In this case, the load on the liver increases, so the development of pathologies of this organ is quite possible. If a person cannot take Corvalol, then analogues can be used: Valocordin, Corvaldin.

It should be noted that if a patient constantly takes the drug and then abruptly stops doing so, then side effects appear: sleep disturbances, tachycardia. The patient's condition worsens even more.

Can pregnant women take the drug?

Many pregnant women are interested in how often can they take Corvalol? The fact is that the period of bearing a baby is very difficult for the body. The expectant mother cannot sleep normally, she is constantly worried and worried about her child. Therefore, the presented drug seems effective and safe to her.

However, this is not at all true. Phenobarbital, present in the drug, can depress the nervous system of not only the mother, but also the baby. In addition, the medication impairs blood clotting, which increases the risk of bleeding in the baby on the first day of life.

The medicine is also addictive, that is, the previous dosage ceases to act as before, which prompts the person to increase the number of drops taken. It is better for a woman to use Corvalol analogs that do not contain phenobarbital or bromine.

Corvalol: components, how it works, instructions for use, to whom it is indicated, contraindications

The modern pharmacological market offers dozens of sedatives, sleeping pills and antidepressants, but many people, especially the elderly, still trust proven drugs - Corvalol and Valocordin.

Corvalol has gained popularity due to its availability and low cost, and its effectiveness as a sedative cannot be denied. At the same time, many adherents of treatment with these drops forget about potential danger, which can be fraught with the use of excessive amounts of even the most natural herbal preparation. Corvalol, by the way, is not so “natural”, because it contains synthetic psychotropic components, and an impressive concentration of alcohol can make the drug dangerous for certain categories of patients.

Valocordin - an analogue of Corvalol- was created back in pre-war Germany. In the post-war years, the miraculous remedy for nervous disorders and insomnia became extremely popular, which served as an impetus for its industrial production in Western Europe and the Soviet Union. In Kyiv, since 1960, they began to produce a drug called “Corvalol”, excluding hop cone oil from the recipe for the classic Valocordin. Thus, from the second half of the last century to the present day, Corvalol began to occupy an honorable place in the first-aid kits of millions of Russians and residents of other countries of the post-Soviet space.

Nowadays, Corvalol is allowed for free sale in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and some Asian countries, and in Europe itself its production has long been abandoned in favor of more modern and effective sedatives. Moreover, included in Corvalol phenobarbital makes the drug prohibited for import into the USA, Lithuania and many other European countries. This is worth knowing and remembering for those who like to calm their nerves with Corvalol drops and are used to taking it with them on trips.

In addition to the sedative effect, Corvalol has a number of side effects, it can cause addiction and neurological disorders and even withdrawal symptoms. Before using it, you should carefully read the instructions for use, which indicate the permissible dose per dose and the conditions when the drug can really help.

Composition and principle of action

Corvalol is a combination product that contains both herbal and synthetic components - alpha-bromoisovaleric acid ester, phenobarbital, sodium hydroxide to dissolve phenobarbital, peppermint oil, ethanol 96% and water. (The alcohol content in the solution is at least 47%).

Alpha-bromoisovaleric acid ester And ethanol act on the receptors of the oral cavity and pharynx, reducing the excitability of the nervous system, cause an inhibitory effect on the cortex and subcortex of the brain, and have an antispasmodic and sedative effect like the usual “valerian”. Large concentrations of Corvalol have a hypnotic effect.

Phenobarbital- a sedative component that inhibits the transmission of excitation impulses to the cerebral cortex and subcortical nerve centers. It causes drowsiness and a decrease in the speed of reactions, has a sedative and hypnotic effect. The degree of inhibition of excitatory signals in the brain is determined by the number of drops taken: if the recommended dosage is observed, they will calm you down; if it is exceeded, you can feel a strong hypnotic effect.

Thanks to the inhibitory effect of the components of Corvalol on the vasomotor center, the antispasmodic effect on the vessels of the heart and other organs, a weak hypotensive effect of the drug is achieved, which, however, should not be relied upon in cases that require treatment with completely different drugs. Corvalol reduces blood pressure, but does not relieve blood pressure, nor does it maintain normotension in hypertensive patients.

Peppermint essential oil contains menthol and its esters, dilates blood vessels, acts as an antispasmodic, enhances contractility of the intestines and stomach, helping to fight bloating. In the oral cavity, peppermint creates a minty taste and an antiseptic effect.

Corvalol is produced in the form of an alcohol solution and tablets. It is recommended to take the drops before meals, dissolving them in water or dripping them onto a piece of sugar. The action begins approximately a quarter of an hour from the moment of administration under the tongue and the beginning of absorption in the oral cavity, where, by the way, more than half of the medicine taken is absorbed.

Analogues of Corvalol for their sedative effect are valocordin, valoserdin, adonis-bromine, barboval, novo-passit, tinctures of hawthorn and motherwort, etc. These drugs may differ in the components they contain, but are endowed with a similar sedative effect; many of them are exclusively herbal and do not contain synthetic psychotropic components, which can distinguish them favorably from Corvalol.

The components of Corvalol are able to penetrate the placenta, causing adverse effects on the developing fetus, therefore It is better for pregnant women to refuse to take it at any stage of gestation. Bromine, released during the metabolism of the drug in the body, can accumulate, causing toxic effects.

Indications and contraindications for use

Corvalol cannot be considered a medicine that can cure a specific disease. This remedy only eliminates individual symptoms of nervous disorders, so you should not think that taking it will help get rid of heart disease, renal colic, or insomnia. Many will object, because Corvalol really eliminates heart pain. This is true, but only the pain that is caused by stress or a nervous breakdown. Pain with and, unfortunately, simple and cheap Corvalol drops no treatment.

Corvalol is able to calm the nerves and help with falling asleep, but it probably won’t take away developed depression, severe neurosis, and anxiety syndrome. Doctors should talk about this and patients themselves, who place their hopes on the miraculous power of the drops, should know.

It happens that the patient is so accustomed to taking Corvalol on every occasion that he simply ignores other medications, and it is not so easy to convince him of the need to take them. What is important here is the strength of the specialist’s conviction and the consciousness of the patient, who may well continue to “indulge” in nerve drops within reasonable limits, but at the same time taking other medications according to the regimen prescribed by the doctor.

Indications the use of Corvalol is clearly defined and indicated in the instructions for the drug, which, however, does not prevent a large number of cardiac patients from taking it as a medicine for the “heart”. It is worth recalling here that Corvalol can relieve some unpleasant sensations from the heart and even pain, but caused more by nervous experiences than by changes in the coronary vessels and myocardium.

If there are structural lesions in the heart associated with other reasons, taking Corvalol is a waste of not only money, albeit small, but also time, since heart diseases require more serious treatment with drugs from other groups.

Corvalol is not prescribed as the main medicine for any diseases; this remedy is symptomatic, designed only to relieve some negative symptoms of neurosis, stress, and nervous tension, so the doctor usually only recommends taking it to a certain category of patients.

Corvalol helps with:

  • Neurosis-like disorders;
  • caused by stress, anxiety (no more than two weeks);
  • Functional disorders of the heart (and without connection with damage to the coronary arteries and myocardium);
  • Severe excitement with (sweating, feeling hot, redness of the face, increased heart rate, etc.);
  • Spasms in the gastrointestinal tract.

Contraindications

Corvalol is sold without a prescription and is taken uncontrollably by a large number of people, especially the elderly, who can increase the dose to the maximum and even exceed it, but this the drug is not as harmless as it might seem. There are also contraindications to Corvalol and they are associated mainly with the phenobarbital, bromine and ethanol included in the drug. These include:

  1. Individual sensitivity or allergy to individual components of Corvalol;
  2. Severe disorders of the liver and kidneys;
  3. Pregnancy, breastfeeding;
  4. Children's age (the drug is contraindicated under 18 years of age);
  5. Lactase deficiency;
  6. Alcoholism;
  7. Epilepsy and convulsive syndrome of other etiologies;
  8. Traumatic brain injury or its consequences.

Instructions for use, features and side effects

It is better to take Corvalol on the recommendation of a doctor who prescribes it to those who have heart symptoms associated with neurosis. At the same time, the specialist had to be sure that there were no serious changes in the heart, since the course of the disease could change under the influence of drops, and the patient would not receive timely prescribed treatment for hypertension, angina, arrhythmia and other serious diseases.

You can also use all known soothing drops on your own, but carefully, following all the recommendations specified in the instructions for use. If the condition worsens while taking it, chest pain, discomfort in the abdomen occurs, anxiety or depression increases, then you should stop treatment with Corvalol and consult a doctor without delay.

Corvalol drops are the most popular form of the drug. The recommended dose per dose is 15-30 drops dissolved in a quarter glass of water,
with strong excitement and acceleration of the pulse, it can be increased to 40-50 drops. The indicated amount of the product is dissolved in water or taken with sugar no more than three times a day, regardless of meals, although many recommend taking it after meals. The duration of use of Corvalol should not exceed two weeks, and it would be better if these drops do not become an indispensable medicine for chronic use, although many patients still “sin” with such treatment.

Elderly people, people with impaired liver or kidney function can take Corvalol, but it is better to slightly reduce the number of drops due to its longer disintegration and increased duration of action. For patients with suicidal tendencies or severe depression, it is better not to take Corvalol, and treatment should be prescribed by a psychotherapist. For angina pectoris, heart defects, or after a heart attack, Corvalol will not harm, but it cannot replace the accepted drug treatment regimen.

In addition to the liquid dosage form, it is possible to take the components of Corvalol in the form of tablets (Corvalol, Corvaltab).
Corvalol tablets are prescribed in 1-2 pcs. in two to three doses per day. The absence of ethanol in the tablets still does not allow it to be prescribed to pregnant women and nursing mothers, transport drivers and people engaged in hazardous work, because phenobarbital is still there, and its effects are not compatible with these circumstances.

Considering the content of ethyl alcohol and a psychotropic component (phenobarbital) in the drug, it is quite logical to expect adverse reactions from Corvalol, especially if the recommended dosage or duration of use has been exceeded. Many patients who have been addicted to Corvalol drops for a long time consider them harmless and harmless, many times exceeding the maximum permissible amounts per dose and, accordingly, encountering the adverse consequences of such uncontrolled treatment.

The most common side effects from taking Corvalol include:

  • Nausea, discomfort in the abdomen, bowel disorders in the form of constipation;
  • Allergic reactions to drug components;
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, lethargy or agitation, hallucinations, sleep disorders;
  • Slow heart rate, lower blood pressure;
  • Breathing problems.

Long-term and constant use of Corvalol can provoke addiction to phenobarbital, as a result of which the effectiveness as a hypnotic will gradually decrease, and during withdrawal, withdrawal symptoms are possible - anxiety, agitation, hallucinations. It is known that after two weeks of taking Corvalol for sleep, the desired effect is no longer achieved.

Overdose Corvalol is provoked by non-compliance with recommendations for dosage and duration of treatment. The accumulation of drug metabolites can cause not only addiction, but also serious disorders in the body upon withdrawal - depression of the central nervous system, hypotension, pulse and breathing disorders. In case of overdose with poisoning, the victim may require treatment in intensive care and detoxification therapy.

Corvalol goes well with most medications for the treatment of diabetes and others that many older people have to take, but there are medications that are better not to be taken at the same time as steroid hormones, contraceptives, sleeping pills, anticonvulsants, and some antibiotics.

Corvalol and alcohol are not compatible and taking them at the same time is not a good idea. Ethanol enhances the adverse effects of phenobarbital and the toxicity of Corvalol in general, so you will have to choose between sedative drops or stress relief with a strong drink. Alcohol forms the basis of the drops, but the amount of it per dose is such that no harm will occur. It’s a different matter if you take drops and drink alcohol in volumes that do not fit into the “therapeutic” dose.

Corvalol lowers blood pressure, so people prone to blood pressure should take it carefully. Drivers of motor vehicles and people employed in potentially hazardous jobs that require quick reactions and high concentration should not take Corvalol due to the presence of phenobarbital and alcohol in it, which slow down the reaction rate and cause drowsiness.

Can Corvalol be taken by pregnant women?

Many expectant mothers have difficulty falling asleep, are overly nervous and worried, and can become extremely emotionally labile due to hormonal fluctuations. In this regard, sedative drops may seem like a rather attractive method of treatment, however, in most instructions, pregnancy and lactation are among the contraindications. Corvalol is no exception, It is contraindicated during pregnancy, since phenobarbital can have a very adverse effect on the development of the baby.

Phenobarbital has a depressant effect on the nervous system of both mother and child, impairs blood clotting, causing bleeding in the first days of life in a newborn. Abuse of Corvalol in the third trimester of gestation causes addiction and subsequent withdrawal syndrome, which can be observed in the child in the development of seizures and severe excitability after childbirth or in the first two weeks of life.

Many will notice that phenobarbital is still prescribed to women “in pregnancy”, suffering from convulsive syndrome or, and there is very little of it in Corvalol. This is true, but the need for anticonvulsant treatment is a much more compelling reason to use phenobarbital than to drink Corvalol containing it to calm the nerves. In addition, there are much safer and more effective sedatives that are not contraindicated for pregnant and lactating women.

Corvalol is one of the most accessible and cheapest sedatives, which does not lose popularity even with the emergence of a large number of other, more modern, medications for insomnia or anxiety. It is loved by both elderly patients with combined pathologies of internal organs, and young people suffering from panic attacks and various manifestations of neurosis.

When stocking up for future use and regularly replenishing the first aid kit with fresh bottles of Corvalol, do not forget that this the drug has a number of serious side effects and contraindications, therefore, reading the instructions and consulting a doctor are integral steps when using Corvalol and any other medicine.

Corvalol for hangover

Treating the consequences of intoxication with Corvalol is not acceptable. The medicine can relieve unpleasant symptoms - pain in the head, heaviness in the right half of the hypochondrium, ease the work of the heart, but the danger lies elsewhere.

The drug will not save you from angina pectoris or heart attack, you need to see a doctor.

It is important when a person stopped drinking and how long it lasted. The mixture of remaining alcohol and phenobarbital from the drug can cause great harm to health. The liver cannot actively process many toxic substances. The negative effects of phenobarbital will intensify; the substance in its crude form will be able to circulate through the circulatory system for a long time.

As a result, with a hangover, breathing problems will occur due to dysfunction of the center in the brain, and the heart will begin to hurt due to arrhythmia. In severe cases there is a risk of death.

Corvalol is often used for drinkers. This must be done carefully. It is better, with the permission of a doctor, to give it in tablet form or replace it with a similar drug. An overdose of the drug will lead to a deterioration in the body's condition. As a means of calming, it is better to use herbal tinctures with honey.

To relieve overstimulation from a drinker, you need to call specialists; they use special products in ampoules that give a good effect. An alcoholic may not drink for a long time, not even one year.

Analogues of the drug

Corvalol is needed in many everyday situations, but in some cases it is necessary to replace it with similar drugs. They are selected by the doctor taking into account the severity of the disease, the presence of chronic pathologies, and general well-being.

Analogues of the product are:

  • Valocordin. The composition is the same as Corvalol. The medicine is released in liquid form in dropper bottles. Calms the nervous system, relieves spasms in the intestines.
  • Novo - Passit. A medicinal product made from herbal ingredients with a calming effect. It has a beneficial effect on the nerves, helps to overcome fears, and calmly fall asleep at the right time. It is not addictive and can be used for a long time.
  • Barboval. It has a hypnotic, sedative, and vasodilator effect. The product contains phenobarbital, therefore it is not intended for treatment of children, pregnant and lactating women.
  • Motherwort tincture. Herbal extract diluted with food grade alcohol. Improves heart function, helps relieve nervous system excitement, and lowers blood pressure. After a short period of time, a person feels an improvement in his condition. The benefits of the medication are in normalizing sleep processes.
  • Validol. Sold in tablets. It soothes angina pectoris, dilates blood vessels, and relieves nausea during motion sickness. To get the maximum effect, Validol is placed under the tongue. • Adonis-bromine. A herbal remedy used to reduce irritability, improve heart function, and for neurotic disorders. The drug is well tolerated and has few restrictions on use and side effects.

There are no clear conclusions about the use of Corvalol. In small quantities, subject to the dosage and mode of use, this remedy helps well. It especially helps older people with problems falling asleep. You should remember about Corvalol's ability to lower blood pressure. In this case, the medicine will become a faithful assistant.
