Cartoon characters the secret life of pets. The Secret Life of Pets: The Long Road Home

Good afternoon, dear readers

I have a certain love for cartoons. No matter how old I get, I will continue to watch them. The cartoon is a small adventure into childhood.

The cartoon is completely related to pets. I love them and everything connected with them. Many of my friends said that they would definitely go to see this cartoon, but I did not understand what this was connected with. I was already starting to think that this was some kind of incredible masterpiece. You'll find out a little later whether my expectations were met.

▆▅▄▃▂ "The Secret Life of Pets" ▂▃▄▅▆

I went to a screening at the Luxor cinema for 140 rubles (vip seat). Honestly, I was surprised that the tickets were so cheap.

The cartoon is intended for children over 6 years old. Lasts 1 hour 30 minutes.

▆▅▄▃▂ Heroes ▂▃▄▅▆

△△△ Terrier Max △△△

Max is the main character. He loves his owner Katie very much and is a truly devoted and faithful dog.

△△△ Spitz Gidget △△△

I can say that she became my favorite character in this cartoon. A very lively and strong-willed dog who is ready to do anything for the sake of her lover.

△△△ Chloe the cat △△△

Not exactly a sweet and kind cat, rather she is very lazy. However, it's fun to watch her antics.

△△△ Pug Mel △△△

A very funny and positive character. I love this breed of dog, so I couldn’t help but like this hero.

△△△ Duke the Dog △△△

He is also the main character who unexpectedly appears in Max’s life. Initially it seems that he is an evil hero, but this is not the case at all.

△△△ Snowball Rabbit △△△

Such a cute looking bunny that is not cute at all. He is the main villain, but without such characters I would definitely fall asleep during the cartoon.

There are also secondary characters, which I will not describe, but they are quite funny.

▆▅▄▃▂ My opinion ▂▃▄▅▆

The cartoon of the place is interesting, sometimes funny. I noticed that the adults laughed more than the children themselves. Personally, I smiled a couple of times during the session; the jokes were very typical of American cartoons.

1.5 hours passed very quickly, but I didn’t get any pleasure or good mood. The plot of the cartoon is weak, typical and sometimes boring. I expected much more. The trailer was more interesting than the cartoon itself.

▆▅▄▃▂ Bottom line ▂▃▄▅▆

    On May 18, 2016, a new family cartoon called The Secret Life of Pets will be released in cinemas.

    The very least it will talk about animals, which will be the key characters:

    First of all, there is a terrier dog named Max;

    A mongrel large brown dog whose name is Duke;

    A little homeless angry rabbit named Snowball;

    A plump gray cat named Chloe;

    A small white dog with a pink bow whose name is Gidget;

    There is also a pug named Mel in the cartoon;

    A dachshund named Buddy;

    Poodle whose name is Leonard.

    In addition to them, there is also a yellow-green parrot; guinea pig; hawk, fish in an aquarium and others.

At the heart of this cartoon is an unmistakably simple premise, stated already in the title: what if pets do not obediently wait in the hallway when the door closes behind their owners, but lead their own independent lives? An excellent question, from the answer to which a multi-figured and multi-character animated comedy is born, impeccably unobtrusive family entertainment that can both make you laugh and touch the viewer of almost any age. An important (but not mandatory) condition: it would be nice for this viewer to have his own experience with one or another pet. Ideally, with a dog, since they are the majority here.

The main character and narrator in The Secret Life of Pets is optimistic Jack Russell Terrier named Max, who lives in perfect harmony with his mistress Katie. Until one day she brings a new dog, Duke, from the shelter - a huge, shaggy, completely ill-mannered and not a fact that purebred (looks like Briard ). Brawls between new rivals lead to both ending up on the street and away from home. Now their task is to return to Katie, turning from opponents into bosom friends along the way. At the same time, Max's friends (a motley group of narcissistic dachshunds , stupid pug , phlegmatic cats , parrot and a lost guinea pig who is in love with him Spitz beauty Gidget at the head) will go in search of the missing dogs.

The very idea - “what if they think and talk, should we turn away?” - and the specific scenario of “The Secret Life of Pets” makes the new cartoon similar to the classic of American animation - Pixar’s “Toy Story”. There were also two bosom enemies who are trying to return to the owner, and a company of toys of different sizes and varieties (including a dachshund!). Critics even talk about plagiarism. The fact of suspicious similarity is obvious, but what can you do if Pixar is still the only one capable of generating truly original stories in Hollywood animated films? “The Secret Life of Pets” is far from original, but its authors handle other people’s stray characters and stories correctly - they inventively rewrite them and wittily force them to serve new tasks. And this cartoon actually has many predecessors; Toy Story alone is not enough: here are Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmatians, and The Way Home: The Incredible Journey.

The most unexpected element of The Secret Life of Pets is the theme of the secret underground of abandoned animals that have found refuge in the sewers and dream of one day killing the entire human race. The gang is led by a snow-white rabbit, cruelly abandoned by a magician; his closest henchman is a pig, expelled from a tattoo parlor after there was no room for tattoos on its skin (where it served as a live demonstration mannequin). Among others are snakes and crocodiles, dogs and cats, various rodents and birds. This paradoxical line calls into question the idyll in the relations between people and lesser brothers, in which the central characters naively believe. But if the confrontation between humanity and the animal world really exists, then in it the creators of the cartoon clearly protect the interests of animals, and not narcissistic and deaf bipeds to the outside world. In this sense, The Secret Life of Pets is closely related to two other outstanding cartoons of the year about a utopian world without people -

Yarrow Cheney And Chris Renaud They made a wonderful cartoon. As I hoped, it turned out to be quite on the level "Zootopia". Both of these cartoons will definitely be in my TOP five best animated films at the end of the year. To prevent this from happening, the animators will have to produce something truly extraordinary in the remaining four months, and in the amount of at least five.

The first thing that the director's duo should immediately be praised for is the original and distinctive characters that are unlikely to be erased from memory. We have already seen somewhat similar dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. in cartoons more than once, but the creators "The Secret Life.." were able to make all the characters extraordinary, from the main ones to the episodic ones. One of the main keys to success here has become interesting characters, where the weaknesses of pets only emphasize and highlight their advantages, giving them greater charm and originality. This applies, again, to everyone: Max, Duke, Chloe, Snowball, Gidget, Buddy and everyone else. The habits of the animals are very successfully reproduced, seemingly familiar to everyone, but presented in an extremely unexpected, amusing and funny way.

I’ll tell you right away about humor. There are plenty of good jokes in the cartoon, but the only thing that spoils the impression is the memorable moment with the rabbit and its continuation - the classic toilet joke with drinking from the toilet. I think the plot could easily have done without either of them: both of these jokes, as for me, are dubious and not funny, and the second one is also pretty much in the teeth, since it is repeated over and over again in two or three dozen films and cartoons about dogs, becoming a kind of “classic”.

The second prerequisite for us not to forget the heroes for a long time "The Secret Life" became talented graphics. Each animal is as real, real with its fluffiness, shaggyness, smooth hair or feathers one to one. I want to touch, stroke, caress and cuddle all current or former pets, they are so alive in the frame. All are good, but the authors with Duke and Gidget especially succeeded. And the rabbit was not far behind.

The excellent Ukrainian dubbing also adds originality to the characters. Firstly, in the Ukrainian version the names were successfully chosen (for example, the cat became Sonya, and the dachshund became Bodey), and secondly, the voices themselves “fit” everyone. Here again you can name everyone. But for me they remained beyond competition Olesya Zhurakhovskaya, who voiced the same Sonya, and Sergey Pritula, who simply inimitably voiced the rabbit Snowball. However, first of all, it was nice to once again hear our legendary "Ukrainian Alpha" Evgeniy Malukha, who gave his unique voice to this wonderful and unforgettable basset. In general, you can rightfully be proud of the Ukrainian dubbing of the cartoon: I think it is definitely in the TOP, at the level "Cars". It will be interesting to compare it with the Russian version.

The plot didn't disappoint either. The story here in dramatic terms is, of course, easier "Zootopia", where humor and drama are approximately half-and-half, but is by no means lightweight. In addition to sketches on the topic of everyday life of pets when their owners are not at home (how much you don’t know about us, people!) and an important reminder that they are not toys and should not be abandoned (this is about the inhabitants of courtyards and sewers of New York) the cartoon also contains other important messages on the topic of sincerity, trust, devotion and friendship, which are worth remembering once again. As well as a message about human shortcomings and weaknesses, brilliantly played out through the characters of animals, and often with good irony and humor. The apologist here, of course, is the rabbit, in whose demagoguery, idle talk and pragmatic-cynical calculations more than one politician of various scales can easily recognize themselves.

To briefly summarize, "The Secret Life of Pets" this is an hour and a half that is definitely not wasted, which will give the viewer a lot of pleasure and good impressions.

A second-rate script, but graphically successful and quite funny cartoon about the adventures of small animals in a big city.

Terrier Max lives happily in New York with his owner Katie. Suddenly the woman brings home another dog named Duke, and Max's happiness comes to an end. The new pet not only attracts the attention of the owner, but also displaces Max from his crib. The terrier responds in kind, and the pets' enmity leads to the fact that they find themselves far from home and without collars. Soon after, Max and Duke fall into the hands of stray dog catchers, but the hapless dogs are rescued by a radical organization of abandoned animals, led by Snowball the rabbit. To flatter their new acquaintances, Max and Duke assure Snowball that they have dealt with their owners and run away from home. Meanwhile, Max's friends in the high-rise building notice his neighbor's absence and organize a rescue operation.

Finding inspiration in brilliant classics is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you can’t learn anything bad from the masters, and even a weak copying of a masterpiece can give an acceptable result. On the other hand, if the public remembers the creation that you are imitating, then the shortcomings of the clone will be clearly visible, because it will be easy to compare and determine where the master worked and where the journeyman worked.

The owners of the Pomeranian Gidget, who appear at the end of the film, are caricatures of comedians Louis C.K. (voice of Max) and Ellen DeGeneres (voice of Dory in Finding Dory).

As you might guess, The Secret Life of Pets is a variation on the Toy Story theme, only with furry and feathered pets instead of plastic dolls. Of course, the new cartoon is not an exact copy of Pixar's first masterpiece. The team of the American-French studio Illumination Entertainment, which gave the world the cartoons “Despicable Me” and “Minions,” respects itself too much to rip everything off its competitors and declare the film an original work. But the plot parallels are quite obvious, and, unfortunately, the 2016 film looks weaker than the picture with which the full-length computer animation began.

Snowball's story about his fallen comrade in arms Ricky is a parody quote from the classic black drama The Boys Next Door. In the original, Snowball was voiced by black comedian Kevin Hart.

No, “The Secret Life” has everything in order with graphics and animation. If cartoons were judged solely by their pictures, The Secret Life would score high - although not as high as the stunning Zootopia. But, of course, it would be strange if real New York were as magical, enchanting and amazing as a fantasy city with several climatic zones. Illumination did a great job of turning New York into a thriving metropolis-candy, but the emphasis on verisimilitude prevented the artists from going further and having a blast.

Unfortunately, when you move from the picture of The Secret Life to its script, the problems of the cartoon immediately catch your eye. If “Toy Story” and similar “buddy movies” are built around the forced partnership of two colorful and very different heroes, who drive each other to white heat until they learn to appreciate their differences, then Max and Duke find themselves, as they say in America, "brothers from different mothers." They don't look alike, but they behave and think exactly the same. Therefore, the dogs turn into a well-coordinated team almost immediately after they get into trouble, and this makes the tape much more boring than it could have been if Max and Duke continued to pick each other. In addition, such a scenario deprives the picture of what should have been its central intrigue. What's the point of a full-length adventure if the heroes start acting like brothers in the first half of the film?

The other characters in “The Secret Life” also do not demonstrate the screenwriting skills of the film’s authors. The picture is so lazy that it has three white and fluffy heroes who turn out to be “cool guys”. This is tiny Snowball, who pushes even hefty crocodiles around, his Spitz neighbor Gidget, who is secretly in love with Max, who organizes a rescue expedition and turns out to be a karate master, and a nameless poodle who loves heavy metal. It was possible to joke like that once, twice was too much, and three times was an outright exaggeration. In general, the film has far more characters than good ideas associated with them, and this overloads and clutters the production. A potentially entertaining film turns into a hectic flickering of characters, many of whom are included in the script only so that as many dolls as possible can be released based on The Secret Life.

Perhaps the most obvious screenwriting fiasco of the film is the way it presents its few serious, dramatic scenes. So, at a certain point, Duke tells how he ended up in a dog shelter and finds out what happened to his former elderly owner. If this were a scene from a Pixar film, the audience would be crying out loud from the overwhelming emotions. And Illumination presents Duke’s story as dry information for information that does not evoke any emotions. Perhaps director Chris Renaud didn't want children to cry in the middle of a comedy-adventure film. But why then include the potentially tear-jerking material in the film at all? After all, it’s clear that Duke needs a home and that Max should make room, since his owner wants it.
