When there is about a week left before the competition, the so-called. sodium (salt) load, in which you must almost double the sodium content of your diet over several days (usual sodium chloride intake is 9-16 g per day). After this, it is necessary to sharply reduce the intake of sodium into the body to a minimum. In this case, during exercise, diuresis will be inhibited due to the reabsorption of water in the kidneys. At the same time, a natriuretic reaction will develop in the body due to inhibition of sodium reabsorption. When you stop taking sodium, the body “by inertia” continues to remove sodium, and along with it, fluid from the body. A small addition: you must independently determine the number of days during which the sodium content in the diet increases and decreases experimentally.

What does the typer have to do with it?

In the domestic literature, the term “typer” corresponds to the concept of supercompensation of glycogen in muscles. To successfully use a typer, an athlete needs to determine in the off-season the number of days when he is on a protein diet and when he is on a carbohydrate diet. There is no need to remind you that at the first stage of the typer (the so-called carbohydrate pit), it is necessary to ensure a high frequency of meals, using lean meat, fish, low-fat cottage cheese, egg whites, as well as vegetables and fruits as a source of fiber as a source of protein ( otherwise you may experience digestive problems). At the second stage of the typer - the actual carbohydrate load - a variety of foods containing starch and potassium are used, such as potatoes, various cereals, bread and a sufficient amount of water.

The synthesized glycogen will bind water, so that the decrease in fluid in the intercellular space will occur in two directions: loss of water and sodium during diuresis and “pumping out” from the intercellular space into muscle cells, where glycogen granules are formed.

In the 60-70s, a number of researchers identified the important role of the cardiopulmonary receptor zone in the regulation of sodium and water excretion by the kidneys. In these studies, when a person is immersed up to the chin in warm water (“immersion”), peripheral veins are compressed and blood is moved, increasing the intrathoracic fraction of the central blood volume. Signals from the receptors in this zone and stretching of the right atrium increase the secretion of natriuretic factor and the excretion of sodium and water by the kidneys. Increased kidney function and increased urination during “immersion” are also due to an increase in cardiac output due to an increase in blood return to the heart.

Somewhat later, the so-called method was proposed. "dry" immersion. The “dry” immersion method (being in water without contact with it) is one of the methods of simulating weightlessness, adopted in astronautics, which has been proposed for use in sports. To use “dry” immersion, use a large bath (about 2 m3). The water temperature should be constant (not lower than 34-35 degrees) and make the athlete feel comfortable. The athlete lies down on a waterproof fabric covered with a sheet and, plunging under the weight of his body, sags in the water. Water surrounds the athlete's body from all sides to the level of the costal arch. The chest should be 35-40 mm above the water plane. The duration of stay in the bath can vary depending on the severity of the previous work - from 1.5 to 5 hours.

The increase in diuresis, impaired by previous muscle work, after the use of dry immersion in studies conducted on weightlifters was 10% on the day of intense training, about 30% the next day and 20% on the second day. On the third day, diuresis rates in the group using “dry” immersion were equal to those in the control group, from which we can conclude that the optimal option would be to use the procedure two to three days before the competition.

Of course, not everyone has the opportunity to use such a procedure. But, if there is such an opportunity, try to include it in your arsenal of pre-competition preparation.

The combination of sodium loading and typer leads to a decrease in sodium and water content in the intercellular space due to increased natriuretic response, and the simultaneous binding of water in muscle cells by synthesized glycogen.

Herbal diuretics and sedatives can be used together in the form of teas and decoctions. In this case, you will lose excess fluid and protect yourself from water retention under conditions of severe emotional stress.

The use of diuretics and sedatives can be started after stopping the sodium load and leaving the carbohydrate hole. At the same time, the water that you take a week and a half before the competition can be treated with an alternating magnetic field (let me remind you that after finishing the salt load, you should only take distilled water in order to limit the intake of sodium, usually present in tap water).

Fluid retention in the body is an unpleasant phenomenon familiar to most people, especially women. It leads to swelling, which not only affects the appearance, but also increases the load on the internal organs. Difficulty removing fluid from the body is a symptom of some heart and kidney diseases. But most often this happens due to an incorrect lifestyle and because many do not know what foods retain water in the body. Why does fluid retention occur in the body?

The main reason for water retention in human tissues and cells is electrolyte imbalance. Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium) play an important role in ensuring the normal functioning of the body. Another reason why water retention occurs is a high level of insulin in the blood, which stimulates the release of aldosterone, a hormone that retains sodium in tissues. Therefore, edema is also provoked by foods and drinks with a high glycemic index.


Thus, there are two main food groups that can retain water in the body. Let's look at each in detail.

Foods High in Sodium

All products containing large amounts of sodium in their composition are products that retain fluid in the body. The most common source of sodium is table salt (sodium chloride). Almost all food of animal and plant origin contains sodium chloride in its pure form:

Their salt content is low, and their consumption is the minimum necessary to maintain electrolyte balance. But in the production of many food products, sodium is artificially added to them. A small package of any salty snack or just a few slices of sausage provides several times your daily sodium intake. Another group of foods that cause water retention are foods with a high glycemic index (GI). Its use causes a sharp release of insulin, which leads to the production of the hormone aldesterone. It retains sodium in the body's cells and causes swelling.

Drinks that retain water in the body

When drinking some drinks, fluid will be retained rather than removed, so if you are prone to swelling, you should limit their intake. For example, beer and sweet carbonated drinks have a high glycemic index, and coffee in small doses has a diuretic effect, but when consumed in excess or with large amounts of sugar, coffee retains water in the body.

Drinking alcohol always causes swelling. Proper nutrition and an active lifestyle are the best means of preventing edema caused by the accumulation of fluid in the body. Daily consumption of clean water, fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and seafood, steamed or boiled, exclusion of fast food, sweets and industrial sauces from the diet is the key to excellent appearance, absence of swelling and health problems.

But we usually drink sweet coffee, and even with cookies, and the liquid is retained rather than removed.

Everyone knows about the benefits of milk, cottage cheese and yoghurt, but when consuming high-fat milk, the body begins to produce more insulin, the presence of which enhances the work of the adrenal glands: they produce a hormone that retains sodium salts.

To stay healthy, a person only needs 2.5 g of salt per day, which is less than 1/3 tsp, so, to be objective, food does not need to be salted at all. Why? But because salt is hidden in natural, natural products, and not just in store-bought, ready-made and semi-finished products.

And we eat meat and fish dishes almost every day, and more than once; excess creatine works to accumulate water - up to 2 liters, even if the swelling is “not visible to the eye.” To restore fluid balance, you do not need to take diuretics or reduce your drinking regimen; on the contrary, you need to drink up to 3 liters of clean water per day, along with a salt-free diet, until the swelling “goes down”.

Hidden salt can also be “found” in very healthy products, although at first glance this seems strange. From 2 to 8% salt contain corn and oat flakes, chicory, green beans, rye bread, potatoes, celery (root), spinach, bananas, raisins, oranges, dates, rose hips, nuts, tomatoes, etc.

Is it possible to avoid swelling?
