Valery Nikolaevich Kubasov- Honorary citizen of the cities of Vladimir , Vyazniki,Kaluga(Russia ); Arkalyk, Karaganda (Kazakhstan ); NY, Atlanta, Nashville,
San Francisco
, Salt Lake City, Houston
(USA).

Soviet cosmonaut No. 18. This is how he went down in history. Our fellow countryman is Valery Nikolaevich Kubasov. Twice Hero of the Soviet Union. USSR pilot-cosmonaut. And since 2016 - Honorary Citizen of the Vladimir Region (posthumously). Valery Nikolaevich Kubasov was born on January 7, 1935 in Vyazniki. In the family of Nikolai Ivanovich and Tatyana Ivanovna Kubasov. The father of the future space conqueror was a military man. Valery Kubasov dreamed of heaven since childhood. In Vyazniki, he studied at secondary school No. 2, from which he graduated in 1952, with a silver medal. Then he studied at the Moscow Aviation Institute. Aircraft Engineering Faculty, class of 1958. From 1966 to 1968 - postgraduate studies. At the Central Design Bureau. Then the dissertation defense. Valery Nikolaevich Kubasov receives a Candidate of Technical Sciences degree. By the way, immediately after graduating from the Moscow Aviation Institute, a native of Vyaznikov Kubasov was assigned to OKB-1 (later the Central Design Bureau). Valery Kubasov went from an engineer to a test cosmonaut instructor and head of the flight test service. Our fellow countryman was engaged in the design of manned spacecraft.

In many ways, 1966 was a turning point for Valery Kubasov. Five years after the legendary flight of Yuri Gagarin, on May 23, 1966, by order of the boss and chief designer Vasily Mishin, Valery Kubasov was included in the first group of test cosmonauts of the enterprise. And Kubasov worked in the cosmonaut corps for almost 30 years. Until November 1993.

18 days 17 hours 59 minutes. This is the total duration of space flights of Vyaznikov resident Valery Kubasov. And there were three of them in his life. So, first flight. Valery Nikolaevich performed it from October 11 to 16, 1969 as a flight engineer of the Soyuz-6 spacecraft together with Georgy Shonin. This was the program of the world's first group flight of three Soyuz-6/Soyuz-7/Soyuz-8 spacecraft. It was during this flight that, for the first time in the world, experiments were carried out on the implementation of welding work in space. And flight engineer Kubasov conducted them.
His call sign was "Antey-2". And the flight duration was four days, 22 hours, 42 minutes, 47 seconds.

Valery Kubasov made his second flight to the stars from July 15 to 21, 1975 as a flight engineer of the Soyuz-19 spacecraft together with Alexei Leonov. Let us remind you that Alexey Arkhipov, by decision of the Legislative Assembly of the Vladimir Region, also became an honorary citizen of the 33rd region. By the way, Valery Nikolaevich’s partner, Alexey Leonov, said more than once: “Thank you to the Vladimir land. For Kubasov." The July 1975 flight became an epoch-making event. On July 15, at 15.20, Soyuz-19 was launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome. With Leonov and Kubasov on board... A few hours later, the Apollo ship sets off for the stars in the USA. And here it is, the first ever handshake between Soviet cosmonauts and American astronauts in orbit. This is the first time that ships from different countries have docked in orbit. Already in the new millennium, it was on Vladimir soil that the participants in those events repeated that same legendary handshake. In 2005, the crews were met in the Vladimir region. Together with Alexei Leonov, Thomas Stafford and Vance Brand, Valery Kubasov recalled that flight. And this is archival, already unique footage.

"The ships docked. It was approximately over the Elbe, over Europe."

On the Apollo-Soyuz expedition, Kubasov's call sign was Soyuz-2. And the flight duration was 5 days 22 hours 30 minutes 51 seconds. "Orion-1" This is already the call sign for the third flight. From May 26 to June 3, 1980. Kubasov became the commander of the Soyuz-36 spacecraft under the program of the Soviet-Hungarian expedition to visit the Salyut-6 orbital station. In the 1980s, the representative of the Hungarian People's Republic, the first Hungarian cosmonaut Bertalan Farkas, became Vyaznikov's "space partner". That flight lasted 7 days 20 hours 45 minutes and 44 seconds. Space loves precision.

Valery Nikolaevich Kubasov never broke ties with the Vladimir land. And he said about Vyazniki: “this city is always in my heart.” In addition, Valery Nikolaevich regularly came with his colleagues to the Kirzhach district, to Novoselovo. To the place of death of Yuri Gagarin and Vladimir Seregin. He was well acquainted with cosmonaut No. 1 Yuri Gagarin. And this is how he talked about it in one of the interviews.

VALERY KUBASOV, PILOT-COSMONAUT, TWICE HERO OF THE SOVIET UNION:“He and I often sat on the simulator, practicing various modes of returning to earth and descending from space orbit, and I saw how passionate he was about astronautics.”

Valery Kubasov is twice Hero of the Soviet Union, winner of many of the highest awards. Including the medal "For Merit in Space Exploration". Hero of the Hungarian Republic. Honorary citizen of many cities: from New York to Kaliningrad. And, of course, Vyaznikov, the city of childhood. As Kubasov himself recalled, he came to Vyazniki at the first opportunity. I tried not to miss the famous All-Russian Fatyanovsky holiday. Emphasizing, the songs of the “Vyaznikovsky nightingale” - Alexei Fatyanov - are the same cosmos. Only feelings and emotions.

VALERY KUBASOV, PILOT-COSMONAUT, TWICE HERO OF THE SOVIET UNION:"These are melodic, soulful songs, full, deep... In every sense, that's why I love them so much."

Valery Kubasov's spacesuit is still kept on display at the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve - in the Golden Gate. In the section "Heroes of the Soviet Union". Valery Nikolaevi is the author of several books. One of the main ones is “Touch of Space”. Even after his retirement, he was active and was a wise mentor for the current generation of space explorers. The famous fellow countryman Valery Kubasov passed away on February 19, 2014. Valery Nikolaevich was 79. Twice Hero of the Soviet Union was buried at Troekurovskoye Cemetery in Moscow. Surprisingly happy in his profession - a lucky star, no less, this is how he was in everyday life. Together with his wife Lyudmila Ivanovna, Valery Nikolaevich raised his daughter Ekaterina and son Dmitry. The people of Vladimir have always been proud of their outstanding fellow countryman. In the memory of several generations and, of course, the entire country, Valery Nikolaevich Kubasov will remain a man from that cohort of star conquerors. Brave, bright, courageous. Biography

Valery Kubasov was born in the city of Vyazniki, in the Vladimir region. He also attended school there. Since childhood, he dreamed of building airplanes, so after school he went to the Moscow Aviation Institute. Like many cosmonauts, Kubasov was an aviator in the early stages of his life.

After graduating from the Moscow Aviation Institute, he was assigned to the Korolev design bureau, to the ballistics department. It turned out that from a young age, aircraft designer Kubasov began to serve in the nascent space industry of the Soviet Union.

Flights into space

During his space career, Valery Kubasov made several flights:

  • 1969 - together with G.S. Shonin, the seventeenth cosmonaut of the country, he sets off on a flight on the Soyuz-6 spacecraft. Here, for the first time in the world, flight engineer Kubasov carried out welding work in space conditions. Equipment for this was specially developed in one of the Soviet laboratories
  • 1975 - flight on the Soyuz-19 spacecraft, which docked with the American Apollo
  • 1980 - third flight on the Soyuz-36 spacecraft as part of the Soviet-Hungarian expedition. Kubasov's partner was the Hungarian cosmonaut B. Farkas.

"Handshake in Space"

The Soyuz-Apollo project, known as the “handshake in space,” involved a series of experiments in which, of course, Valery Kubasov also participated. One of these experiments was microbial exchange: members of both crews exchanged microorganisms with each other.

The astronauts also studied the solar corona using an artificial solar eclipse - the Sun was eclipsed by Apollo, and the observation was made from Soyuz. Another experiment involved chemical and metallurgical processes in space conditions.

After space career

Having completed his service to space, Valery Kubasov continued to work at NPO Energia. Since 1997, he has been a scientific consultant to this organization. The cosmonaut spent his last years in Moscow, where he died in 2014. Back in the seventies, Kubasov began writing books about astronautics. He was one of the authors of the books “Interplanetary Flights” and “Professional Training of Astronauts,” and in 1984 he published the book “A Touch of Space.”
