Before making topiary from cones, as in the photo, take the following materials and tools:

  • small voluminous pine cones;
  • thuja twigs;
  • various beads with a diameter of at least 0.5 cm;
  • foam ball;
  • satin ribbon;
  • golden thread;
  • scissors;
  • gypsy needle or knitting needle;
  • white acrylic paint;
  • sponge for washing dishes;
  • transparent universal glue “Dragon” or hot glue;
  • bamboo skewers;
  • white thick thread;
  • ceramic vessel;
  • cement;
  • sisal.

How to make topiary from pine cones and thuja

Using all-purpose glue or hot glue, cover the foam ball with small pine cones. If they have not yet opened, then keep the cones in a warm place or put them in a slightly warm oven.

If you don't have a ready-made sphere, crumple the newspapers into a ball shape. Wrap with white paper. Secure the paper ball by wrapping it with white thread. Select cones of approximately the same size. Try to keep the gaps to a minimum. If desired, you can combine it with acorns or wild chestnuts.

To prevent decorative elements from falling off, you can secure them with gold thread.

To decorate a pine cone topiary, cut a small piece from a sponge and use it to paint the ends with white paint. You can use not only acrylic paint, but also gouache, and even white toothpaste.

Disassemble the thuja branches into small pieces. Using a gypsy needle or knitting needle, carefully fill the gaps between the cones with thuja sprigs on the top of the topiary.

Additionally, secure all the details by randomly wrapping the ball with gold thread.

Glue the beads to the cones, distributing them evenly over the entire area of the ball. You can use beads of one color or several.

To finally assemble the topiary from cones with your own hands, put together 6-7 bamboo skewers and wrap them with thick white thread. Do not cover the bamboo sticks 4-5 cm from the sharp ends with the thread.

Using a pencil or pen, make a hole in the ball in advance. Coat the ends of the sticks with glue and insert the topiary trunk with cones into the ball.

Dilute cement with water or use a ready-made cement mixture. Insert the tree of happiness into a ceramic or plastic vessel, fill it with cement, secure with improvised means and leave until completely hardened. Decorate the top of the pot with sisal to imitate grass.

Instead of cement, you can take gypsum, dilute it with water and fix the trunk in the pot. Decorate the pot with a satin ribbon matched to the color of the beads used.

The autumn topiary of pine cones and thuja is ready to make it New Year's, add more glitter and a couple of small Christmas tree decorations.

Using various natural materials and combining them, you can create unique topiaries. By varying the shape and size of the crown, you will get a tree of happiness in the shape of a Christmas tree, a heart, or even an egg.

You can make not only fun crafts from cones that kids will happily play with. This natural material can become the basis for creating an original topiary.

Step-by-step instructions for making topiary

To make a topiary, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • cones;
  • polystyrene foam, cardboard;
  • glue gun;
  • decorative materials;
  • flower pot;
  • brown paint.

If you have all of the above, you can safely begin creating a masterpiece.

First you need to create a foundation. It is made in the shape of a cone made of foam or cardboard. You need to paint the resulting structure brown.

We form a tree. Starting from the top point of the cone, you need to glue cones of different shapes and sizes with a minimum distance between them. Now you need to carefully place the tree with its base in the flower pot.

From pine or spruce cones you can make topiaries of different shapes and sizes: square, oval, triangular, rectangular, large, small.

Another simple option for creating topiary

We will need:

  • cones, pine twigs, a thick branch for the trunk;
  • newspaper, paper, glue, scissors, masking tape;
  • twine, burlap;
  • decorative stones, gypsum mixture, pot.

After the components have been prepared, you can begin to make a tree from fir cones.

We start by creating a topiary crown by crumpling the paper and forming it into a ball. The resulting blank is covered with masking tape and painted brown.

After the paint has completely dried, it is necessary to make a hole in the ball, the size corresponding to the diameter of the tree trunk. Glue is poured into it and a pre-prepared branch is inserted. To strengthen the structure, it is advisable to wrap the trunk with twine, gluing the top and bottom of this material directly to the branch.

All that remains is to decorate the autumn topiary with pine cones. They are glued starting from the top of the ball. The gaps are filled with coniferous branches. Next, you need to wrap the pot in burlap and place the tree in it. After this, you can further decorate the product with beads, sparkles, flowers, and beads.

I have always admired the ability of people to make such magnificent compositions with their own hands. You can’t buy this in any store, and you can pleasantly surprise your friends. Great ideas to decorate your home for the holidays. I especially liked the topiary made of cones with rowan berries. Looks very original! I'll try to make something similar myself!

The whole family made a similar topiary with their own hands at the dacha. Moreover, they used pine and spruce cones. This type of cones can be used in two variations of their stage - fluffy and closed. This way there is more space for creativity, higher originality of the product, and a clearer meaning of the craft. For those especially interested in the question, I can suggest using one cedar cone as a highlight.

Recently I accidentally saw an article about cones on the Internet and was hooked. That article suggested soaking this natural material in white (bleach) for a while. There was even a photograph. The bumps on it are really white! Beauty is not real! I think these bleached cones will make topiary even more interesting. You can also use both white and regular cones in one product. If only there was imagination, beauty would not take long to arrive! In general, I’ll be going to the forest soon! :)

It’s very beautiful and unusual, but using a glue gun can be a very difficult task for a girl, it’s hard to squeeze out the glue, you need to put in a lot of effort to do it.

  • Even though times have changed, handmade gifts are still considered appropriate for any occasion. If the New Year is already close and you don’t have any ideas yet, try to create your own masterpiece that both adults and children will be pleased to receive.

    We are talking about such a unique gift as a New Year's topiary. To create a feeling of holiday, it is enough to decorate it with Christmas tree decorations, candies, ribbons and many other improvised means, and such a gift is made quickly and without much effort.

    We present to you a DIY New Year's topiary master class: choose the best idea for your family and friends.

    DIY New Year's topiary, photo

    Description of the gift

    Traditional topiary is a miniature tree used for decorative purposes. The top of the tree most often has a round shape, but if you wish, you can give it non-standard proportions.

    This tree can be placed in a flower pot, glassware, plastic base or permanent candle holder and used as a gift for any occasion. And to decorate your home on New Year's Eve, you can make a topiary New Year tree with your own hands.

    This gift is extremely popular because it always looks bright and festive.

    Topiary can be decorated in different ways:

    • use ribbons, decorative fabric elements, bows, braid, etc.;
    • decorate with beads, beads, stones, coins, keys;
    • diversify colors using varnish, paint, glitter;
    • use rain and Christmas tree decorations;
    • make the gift “edible”: bagels, sweets, small fruits will be used.

    note that such a gift can become symbolic. Do you wish your loved ones prosperity in the coming year? Then the topiary decor will not be complete without coins or printed banknotes.

    Do you want the next year to be full of love? Decorate the tree in bright pink and red colors, and give the top the shape of a large heart.

    Look at the photos of New Year's topiaries: almost every idea can be realized without much effort. We will tell you about the most common and interesting methods.

    Where to begin

    The first stages of production are the same for any type of topiary. This is the choice of a stable base for the tree, an axis to which decorative elements will be attached, as well as securing the created structure.

    Consider what the tree crown will be made of. For example, if it is lightweight polystyrene foam or papier mache, the base can be made lighter.

    If the crown is made of wood or other material with a relatively large weight, you will have to work hard to give the topiary durability.

    Also choose a flower pot, wide glass or other stand. Prepare the axis of the tree in advance: it can be an even twig, a pencil, a metal knitting needle and other materials.

    Prepare a hardening material for attaching the tree to the container: plaster, cement, glue or alabaster will suit you. Depending on the planned decor, prepare fabric, colored paper, jewelry, scissors or paints, threads, rain, etc.

    Follow the step-by-step instructions for DIY New Year's topiary:

    By the way, topiary does not necessarily have to have a stable axis. Use strong wire to hold the crown - and you can bend the tree in different directions if necessary.

    Idea No. 1: a simple topiary made from Christmas tree decorations

    One of the most common ideas on how to make a New Year's topiary involves using Christmas balls of different colors and sizes.

    In addition to toys, you will need rain and tinsel, pine cones decorated with gilded paint, ribbons, bells and other decorative elements.

    Wrap the pot with cloth, ribbons or rain. If you initially chose a container with a good appearance, paint its surface with thematic patterns: snowflakes, Christmas trees, snowmen, etc. For decoration, you can use colored paper and double-sided tape.

    It is enough to paint the axis of the tree brown or wrap it with rain, ribbon or rope thread. Attach plastic Christmas balls to the crown. It is not necessary to make such a tree multi-colored: you can stick to a single color scheme and select balls of the same tone, but of different sizes.

    Advice: To keep the balls on the “crown” of the tree, use toothpicks. Treat their ends with glue: then the toothpick will stick tightly to the base, and the toy will not dangle.

    DIY New Year's topiary: master class, photo

    If desired, the gaps between the Christmas tree decorations can be filled with generously sprinkled beads or beads of a suitable color. Often nuts (previously repainted) or bows are glued to such a tree.

    Idea No. 2: herringbone topiary

    An excellent gift option for this holiday is a DIY topiary Christmas tree. The procedure for creating the tree itself is practically no different from the standard one: the same axis and base in the form of a durable container. But the top of the tree is made differently: the cone-shaped shape can be made not only from polystyrene foam, but also using papier-mâché, fabric or durable cardboard filled inside.

    Attention! You can also choose a wooden cone for the Christmas tree, but it will be heavy and will not always be able to securely hold the decorative elements.

    Do you want this Christmas tree to look interesting? Here is one of the master classes: New Year trees and topiaries made of colored yarn. Take thicker threads and begin to tightly wrap the cone-shaped base.

    To be safe, you can lubricate the surface with glue: then the yarn will not change its location.

    Another way to secure the yarn is to glue it only at the base. In some places, the direction of the thread can be adjusted using sewing needles or pins. At the top of the cone, the thread is secured in a similar way.

    For a bright effect, you can also use multi-colored ribbons: wrap the cone over the entire area - and you get a stylish Christmas tree, to which you can easily glue or sew on some decorations.

    Sometimes a Christmas tree with a textile surface is made more magnificent: cut out a large number of small elements in the form of drops or triangles in advance and glue them onto the cone. The same decor can be achieved by using green paper or cardboard.

    You can choose berries, dried fruits, jewelry and other accessories as decorative elements. It is important that they are not overly heavy, otherwise the tree itself will fall. You can make the top of the Christmas tree curved: such decorations will be an excellent addition to the New Year's interior around the entire perimeter of the room.

    And don’t forget about the tip: attach a small star or bow to the top.

    By the way, for convenience, it is better to decorate the crown of the Christmas tree before attaching it to the base. Unlike a tree, a Christmas tree does not have to be installed in a pot: the base can be made using a cross-shaped structure made of pencils or in the form of a cylinder with dimensions sufficient to stabilize the tree.

    Idea No. 3: fragrant topiary made from coffee beans

    And such a decorative element will not only decorate your home, but also create a warming atmosphere. Both a round topiary and a miniature Christmas tree can be decorated using coffee beans. The only way to secure these elements to the surface is to use glue.

    If grains are difficult to adhere to the surface of the tree (for example, when using polystyrene foam as the main material), think about how to wrap the “crown” before decorating.

    Coffee beans on topiary will look impressive in their original form. But if you decide to diversify the decor, use gilded paint or sparkles. You can combine rope fabric or braid with the grains, as well as some dried fruits.

    note that it is better to lay out the grains in different ways: let the layers from the front and back sides of the grains alternate with each other. Some grains can be made to “hang” from the crown of trees: use colored threads, ropes or thin rain.

    Idea No. 4: topiary made from sweets

    Topiary made from edible sweet elements is very popular. Wrap the ball in fabric and wrap the herringbone topiary with a wide ribbon. Start attaching candies in bright wrappers to the textile surface.

    They can be glued, sewn or secured with a stapler. We advise you to select candies with a similar design and harmonious colors in advance - and combine them in such a way that the decorated topiary does not look contradictory.

    To disguise the space between candies, beads, seed beads, decorative snow, small Christmas balls, rain, and lace elements are traditionally used.

    Another option for a sweet tree for the New Year is a topiary decorated with tangerines. Attach leaves or branches of the Christmas tree to the spherical base: they can be either natural or artificial. Take a strong wire and wrap the tangerines: this will make it easier to attach them to the surface.

    To decorate the branches themselves, take small beads (they easily stick to fabric and plastic) or artificial snow. To make this tree even more fragrant, add dry bay leaves to the composition.

    These and other New Year's topiary master classes will help you create a stylish and memorable gift for your family and friends for the New Year. And, most importantly, you won’t spend a lot of money on decorating the tree.

    And you can also involve children in the process of creating trees and Christmas trees, who will only be glad to have the opportunity to demonstrate their creative abilities.

    Ordinary pine cones can become an excellent home decoration if you apply a little imagination and effort. Looks very original pine cone topiary, made with your own hands.

    The process of bleaching buds is the longest and will take at least 4-5 days, including drying them.

    Making the tree itself from cones will take much less time. Decorate New Year's topiary You can use a variety of decorative elements: pine branches, small New Year's balls, ribbons, artificial snow, beads, etc. Your imagination is the best assistant and advisor!

    In this case, in addition to cones, we will use sisal balls and small Christmas tree balls for the crown.

    For the manufacture of New Year's topiary from cones You will need:

    • Pine cones,
    • white sisal,
    • small Christmas balls – color according to your wishes,
    • a flower pot or any other suitable container,
    • strong wire (I use steel hangers),
    • some round cable (0.5 m),
    • building plaster (alabaster),
    • satin ribbon of a suitable color 0.5-1 cm wide (can be replaced with 100% cotton yarn so as not to fray),
    • hot glue gun,
    • scissors,
    • round nose pliers and pliers (for working with strong wire).

    Of course, you can use your imagination and add any other materials, and you will get your own unique topiary tree.

    It seems that everything is simple, but in reality, often, judging by experience, many questions, discrepancies and inconsistencies arise. To avoid them, and for your tree to turn out perfect, listen to my advice and carefully study the master class offered to you.

    First, let's prepare the barrel.

    Decorative twigs (corelius), which can be bought at florist stores, or an ordinary branch of any tree can serve as a trunk.

    In this case, we will consider the option of making a twisted trunk for topiary from a round cable and strong wire.

    We take a strong wire (I have a metal hanger) and a round cable.

    I pulled out the strands from the cable and replaced them with strong wire. You can straighten the hanger and bite off the required length using pliers.

    We bend it arbitrarily. I also bend the wire from below for strong fixation in the plaster. I made one more additional decorative curl.

    A decorative look can be given using a satin ribbon or yarn: twist it in a spiral, periodically securing it with hot glue. It’s more convenient to do this right away.

    I always use building plaster (alabaster) as a fixative.

    The hole in the pot can be sealed with regular tape.

    We dilute building plaster (alabaster) with cool water to the consistency of thick sour cream and place it in a pot.

    We place the entire composition in the center and hold it until the plaster hardens.

    At the base of the crown there is always a ball, which can be made of polystyrene foam, foil, papier-mâché, newspaper, etc. The main thing: the lighter it is, the better.

    I have a crumpled ball of old newspapers, we wrap it with any thread.

    We make a small hole into which we then fix the barrel with hot glue.

    Preparing sisal balls. They are very simple to make; we roll a small piece of sisal between two palms, just as we roll a ball of plasticine in our hands.

    We attach prepared sisal balls, pine cones and small Christmas tree balls to the crown base with hot glue.

    We decorate as desired, and now we have an unusual, very cute holiday topiary - a decorative tree that will decorate the winter holidays!

    Have fun creating!

    I was glad to help!

    Even in the fall, while walking through the park or forest, do not be too lazy to pick up some fruits of nature, the same leaves, rowan berries, acorns and, of course, pine cones. One can only imagine what kind of crafts can come out of all this, but the fact that a creative person will need all this simple belongings is for sure. For example, you can make amazing things from fir cones with your own hands. Or will you decide to make an autumn or winter souvenir not from spruce, but from pine, or maybe from the smallest, barely noticeable cones?

    Look at how many examples of similar works are in the photo gallery - this is a topiary made of pine cones, and wreaths on the door made of cones, chestnuts, leaves and acorns.

    For a topiary with a crown of cones, you will need materials and tools that can be found in almost every home. But some things may have to be bribed.

    Materials and tools:

    • Plastic bottle;
    • Bamboo mat;
    • Colored paper;
    • Glue;
    • Sackcloth;
    • Styrofoam ball;
    • Cones;
    • Branches;
    • Spray paint;
    • Ribbon.

    This master class assumes that you will make a pot for the tree with your own hands. You can take a regular milk bottle, cut off the neck of it, and make the edges even. According to the shape of the bottom of the bottle, you need to make a piece of colored paper and glue it to the bottom with hot glue.

    Further MK includes the following steps:

    • A bamboo mat is needed to finally decorate the pot. The mat is cut so that it extends slightly beyond the edges of the milk bottle. The mat is wrapped around the cut bottle and glued to it. Using the example photos, you can take a closer look at what kind of decor is achieved using bamboo rugs.
    • The decor of the pot is completed by gluing burlap and a bow. A piece of burlap should also be wrapped around the flowerpot, first it is glued, and a thin satin ribbon is placed on top. You can insert a small sprig of rowan under the ribbon.
    • Next you will need a foam ball. This point is worth clarifying. Today, every second master class involves the use of just such a blank, which is purchased in handicraft stores. It serves as a solid base for crown formation. But you can make the base yourself. From the old method (a lump of newspaper) to searching for the same round small object (a rubber children's ball).
    • Make a hole in the ball into which to insert a topiary trunk made of cones. These will be branches folded into one bundle.

    This point also needs to be considered in more detail. Typically, a classic master class on making topiary suggests using sushi sticks, pencils or wire as the basis for the trunk. But this MK suggests that branches in topiary with cones will look more natural.

    Topiary from pine cones: master class step by step

    Once you have a pot, a foam base and a stem of branches inserted into it, it’s time to prepare the pine cones with your own hands. Ideally, they are small in size and approximately the same.

    You can find a separate master class on how to decorate pine cones. The methods are very different. For example, you can cover them with white paint, then, after waiting for them to dry, apply PVA glue with a sponge, and sprinkle sea salt on top of the cones. You will get these snow cones.

    You can paint the pine cones with spray paint. Which color is better to take, look at the photo. If this is a New Year's topiary, golden and silver colors are appropriate.

    Returning to MK, the actions will be as follows:

    • Insert the crown ball on a branch into the pot. This can be a pot already filled with earth, or filled with fresh plaster. Whatever you want, the trunk of the branches must sit firmly in the pot.
    • You need to decorate the top with some earth or plaster. It can be artificial grass if the topiary is still autumn. You can also throw a couple of miniature maple leaves there. You can see the ideas in the photo.
    • Next, the master class instructs you to make a crown. Namely, to glue the cones. The elements are fixed with hot glue in a circle. Try to avoid any voids, otherwise you will have to fill them with something. Or initially paint the workpiece with the same silver spray.
    • New Year's topiary involves snowy decor. Cotton wool, tinsel, the same sea salt, felt snowflakes, silver threads - you can make the most incredible snowball with your own hands. Or take artificial snow for such a topiary made from cones.

    The master class offers the following points to choose from. A topiary with cones can be decorated with beads, satin ribbons, voluminous snowflakes, and even Christmas tree decorations.

    New Year's topiary made of pine cones (video)

    New Year's topiary made of pine cones

    New Year's topiary can include literally everything that is associated with the holiday. So, tangerines often become decor for cone topiary. This gives the tree a special aroma, and you can see from the photo that the souvenir looks very festive.

    And how to make topiary from cones even brighter:

    • Let the forest animals “sit” under the tree; you can also make them with your own hands, or you can take ready-made figures.
    • A topiary made from cones and acorns that is completely white or white with silver will look elegant.
    • New Year's topiary can stand on a napkin-sun from your brightest photos of the year. Take twelve photos (according to the number of months), lay them out like sun rays, and place a topiary in the center. The whole composition was created with my own hands!

    And next to such a topiary there could easily be a not-so-miniature squirrel. Moreover, such a squirrel can even seem to hold a pot with a tree with its own hands. Cute and cozy!

    Autumn craft: topiary made of pine cones and chestnuts

    There is no need to invent a separate master class. The actions will be similar, because the work differs only in the presence of these same chestnuts.

    How can you achieve beautiful decoration of chestnuts:

    • Again, spray paints often come to the rescue. With gilding and silver - your case.
    • A scattering of chestnuts can be decorated with dot painting. The same one that paints smooth sea pebbles. It looks very original; the work on such painting (it doesn’t matter whether it’s stones or chestnuts) is almost like jewelry.
    • You can simply highlight the chestnut caps with a different color.

    Chestnuts have a smooth structure, try to emphasize it.

    Topiary from cones “Green chrysanthemums” (video master class)

    Elegant trees - topiaries are beautiful not only in the photo. They look festive, elegant, neat, and they exude something kind and fairy-tale. Try doing this yourself, and you won't regret it.

    Good luck!
