How to cook fir oil at home. Unjustifiably forgotten medicinal properties of fir oil

Green shoots, needles and fir cones are a source of volatile liquid with a rich composition. Knowing the medicinal properties and contraindications of fir oil, you can correctly use this therapeutic and cosmetic product. The aromatic liquid has many valuable qualities, as well as analgesic and invigorating effects.

Coniferous trees are forest “doctors of the green kingdom.” Young shoots, green needles and cones secrete phytoncides, which are the plant’s first line of defense against pathogens. The same tasks are performed by essential oils found in all parts of coniferous plants. Resin in the trunk, branches and bark protects the wood from pathogens and pests.

Fir essential oil is a yellowish or colorless volatile liquid with a rich balsamic aroma of pine needles. The high physiological activity of the product is due to terpenes and terpenoids.

Main connections:

  • myrcene;
  • limonene;
  • pinenes;
  • camphene;
  • bornyl acetate;
  • cineole

Sometimes carotene, vitamin C and tannins are mentioned in the description of the composition. They are indeed present, but only in needles.

Volatile substances, and this has been proven by many researchers, penetrate through the skin and mucous membrane of the respiratory system into the human body. Phytochemical compounds mercilessly deal with pathogenic bacteria and fungi.

Medicinal properties of fir oil:

  • anti-inflammatory;
  • local irritant;
  • antiseptic;
  • pain reliever;
  • expectorant;
  • bactericidal;
  • antifungal;
  • cardiotonic;
  • tonic.

Correct and regular use of aroma oil allows you to protect your body from many pathogens. The components are included in metabolism, normalize heart rate and blood pressure, and the tart aroma has a beneficial effect on neuropsychic processes.

The benefits of fir oil are not limited to medical use. The aromatic liquid obtained from the shoots of Siberian fir consists half of bornyl acetate and camphene. From them they produce “fir” camphor - a medicine and an integral part of perfumery. The product is included in medications for injection and external use.

"Fir" camphor is used to treat heart failure and rheumatism. For severe infectious diseases of the respiratory system, it is used to stimulate breathing and blood circulation.

Indications for use

Fir oil can be used by people with infectious and inflammatory diseases of the skin, respiratory and digestive systems. The antiseptic effect and anti-inflammatory effect of pinenes, cineole and borneol are successfully combined.

Some indications for the use of fir oil:

  • colds, ARVI, flu;
  • pharyngitis, tonsillitis, tracheitis;
  • acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia;
  • prostatitis and other diseases of the genitourinary tract;
  • irritable bowel syndrome;
  • stomatitis, periodontitis, gingivitis;
  • insomnia;
  • dermatitis;
  • radiculitis;
  • arthritis.

The analgesic effect allows the drug to be successfully used to relieve pain from bruises, neuralgia and osteochondrosis.

The product improves peripheral circulation, blood and lymph flow in the tissues that ensure the functioning of the musculoskeletal system. The aroma oil helps cleanse the kidneys and joints of excess salts and remove unnecessary metabolites from the body. As a result of its use, blood pressure is normalized (high blood pressure decreases and low blood pressure increases), immunity is strengthened and stress resistance increases.

Is it possible during pregnancy?

Doctors do not recommend taking aromatic oils orally during pregnancy. Phytochemicals may adversely affect the fetus in early pregnancy. External use of fir oil is permissible in small dosages in the second and third trimesters.

  • During pregnancy, many medications are prohibited, including vasoconstrictor drops for the treatment of a runny nose. But during the cold season, respiratory infections can cause serious complications: sinusitis, otitis media, bronchitis, pneumonia. Therefore, add a few drops of fir oil to a “pea” of face cream and lubricate the skin around the nasal passages. This simple manipulation, together with other available preventive measures, will stop the development of a cold.
  • Pregnant women often complain of loss of strength and toxicosis. In this case, inhale the fumes of fir aroma oil for 1–2 minutes. The product has a stimulating effect, increases vitality, improves mood. Applying a few drops to the temples helps with headaches.
  • Back pain is another problem during pregnancy. You can add a little fir oil to the body cream and do a light massage of the lumbar area. In the same way, the cream for stretch marks on the body is enriched. Caution must be exercised, since a pregnant woman’s body works under stress and can overreact even to usual remedies.

Before using the oil, an allergy test is performed: apply a drop to the inside of the wrist or elbow and observe the skin reaction for 15 minutes. The absence of redness, itching, and blisters is a sign that the product does not cause allergies.

Beneficial properties for children's bodies

Fir oil is used to treat colds, acute respiratory viral infections and sore throats in children. The natural product smells good and works quickly. Aroma oil is used only if the child is over 3 years old. The proposed means and procedures are of auxiliary value and do not replace drug treatment.

  • Fir oil is applied externally along with baby cream and for skin diseases.
  • If the child has a cold, then it is mixed with detergent and shampoo during bathing.
  • Inhalations with various medicinal solutions help with a runny nose and cough. You can add a few drops of fir aroma oil to these liquids.
  • In the same way, the antiseptic properties of throat gargles are increased.

These are solvents and carriers that facilitate the penetration of active substances into the skin. Fir oil ingredients enter the body in various ways. The most popular and safest are aromatic baths, compresses, mouth rinses, inhalations, rubbing and massage.

Fir has always been revered by the Russian people as a healing tree. Infusions of pine needles and young shoots helped with colds, coughs, and sore throats; sore joints were treated with lotions. Hunters who left their homes for many months used a decoction of twigs, cones and fir bark to get rid of scurvy. Fir tree oil helped with sprains and bruises. And a bathhouse with a fir broom brought any patient back to his feet.

The medicinal properties of fir oil and its use in the treatment of various diseases are described in the works of Hippocrates. Modern traditional and folk medicine also use fir oil.

Fir oil is produced in several ways. Each method has its pros and cons.

  • laying of raw materials;
  • steam distillation;
  • settling;
  • vacuum distillation;
  • filtration.

Under high pressure, hot steam passes through the raw materials, collects essential components and carries them away. As the steam gradually cools, it separates into water and oil. The process from laying raw materials to receiving finished products takes at least 8 hours. Today, devices have been invented to speed up production, however, with rapid production, fewer useful substances remain in the oil, its smell and quality deteriorate.

Raw materials

To obtain a quality product, it is necessary to use raw materials that meet certain requirements.

To produce fir oil, the following is collected:

  • green cones,
  • young shoots,
  • spruce branches (branches with needles) no more than 8mm thick,
  • pine needles

Fir grows for about 300 years. Very young plants (up to 1 m) do not contain the required amount of volatile substances, therefore You need to choose trees from 1.5 to 2 meters tall. It is better if they grow in a sunny meadow and have a well-developed crown.

Cannot be collected spruce branches from trees growing near the road. Pay attention to the bark of the tree; if the bark is smooth and even, the fir is healthy, but if it is covered with moss or damaged by harmful insects, it is better to avoid such a plant.

Raw materials prepared for future use are well stored and do not lose their quality for several months.

When is the best time to procure raw materials?

Of all the ether-containing coniferous plants, fir has the largest percentage (from 1.5% to 3%) of essential oil-bearing substances. In winter, during the dormant period, their number decreases. The best time to procure raw materials is May-September. In May-June, young shoots and cone ovaries are harvested. In July-September spruce branches and pine needles.

Harvesting should be carried out in dry, sunny weather. If the spruce branches are wet, they must be dried well in a ventilated area, in the shade. Store spruce branches tied up in several pieces, in a hanging position.

How to make at home

There are several ways to prepare fir oil at home. You can cook it hot: in a water bath, in the microwave or in the oven. The cold method of production is infusion in a dark place.

  1. To make butter according to this recipe in May, when active plant growth begins, we collect young shoots, no more than 4-5 cm long, buds (cone ovary), and needles.
  • We cut the shoots into three parts, the buds in half.
  • We take half-liter jars, put the prepared raw materials (fill 3/4 full), fill them with refined oil.
  • We cover the jars with foil, in which we make 2-3 holes.
  • Preheat the oven to 150 degrees, place the jars on a wire rack. After 2 hours, reduce the heat to 60 degrees and leave to simmer for 10 hours.
  • Turn off the oven and let the jars cool completely.
  • Strain the resulting mixture, squeeze out the pine needles and twigs.
  • Now we repeat the whole process: we put the raw materials into the strained oil to get the original volume.
  • Don't add oil! You will need more raw materials than the first time.
  • Leave the oven heating mode the same.
  • The third time, even more raw materials will be needed.
  • Prepare fir oil in three steps.
  • The finished product is poured into glass containers.

The method may seem complicated and time-consuming. This is the case when it’s worth the effort - the result will exceed all your expectations.

2. Second way simpler. We prepare raw materials for it in any summer month.

  • We cut the spruce branches (2 cm), collect the bark if possible.
  • Place the crushed raw materials in a liter jar (up to the shoulders).
  • Heat refined vegetable oil (any) to 80-90 degrees and pour it into a jar.
  • Close the lid.
  • Place in a dark place for 40 days.
  • Strain the resulting mixture, squeeze and heat to 50 degrees.
  • We repeat the procedure.
  • Pour the finished fir oil into bottles.

Store homemade oil in a dark place at room temperature. Dark glass jars and bottles are best suited for storage. Storage in plastic containers is not permitted. Plastic releases substances that are harmful to health.

Making oil at home:

Rhinitis is an inflammation of the nasal mucosa, accompanied by a feeling of congestion and the appearance of mucous or mucopurulent discharge. For treatment, various medications are used (saline solutions, decongestants, topical corticosteroids and herbal preparations), including homemade ones. Let's look at how to make fir oil at home and the basic rules for using it for a runny nose.

Fir oil, widely used in the treatment of pathologies of the ENT organs, has many healing properties. It includes bisabolene, cineole, camphor, terpenes and plant phytoncides, causing the following effects:

  • Immuno-strengthening - regular use of fir oil helps strengthen the body's defenses and prevents infectious and inflammatory diseases of the ENT organs.

  • Decongestant - fir oil effectively eliminates swelling of the mucous membrane and a feeling of nasal congestion due to rhinitis and sinusitis.
  • Anti-inflammatory - the use of healing oil for colds helps to quickly stop the inflammatory process in the affected organs.
  • Expectorant - allows the oil to be used for upper respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis, laryngitis, tracheitis).
  • Antimicrobial - thanks to cineole, which is part of the oil, pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi) that lead to the development of diseases are effectively destroyed.
  • Cleansing - when used intranasally, the product promotes good hydration of the mucous membrane, removing accumulated impurities and mucus.

Most often, otorhinolaryngologists use fir oil in their practice. It effectively relieves inflammation, eliminates nasal congestion, pain and sore throat, and soothes irritated mucous membranes.

The industrial production of fir oil is often disrupted, and improper transportation and storage also affects the properties of the natural product. It was noted that the best results and effectiveness are shown by fresh fir oil, the production of which is not difficult.

Preparation

The main rule for preparing fir oil at home is to use high-quality raw materials. To make fir oil yourself, you will need:

  • Young tree cones, still green.
  • Inflorescences, thin shoots.
  • Branches with needles and the needles themselves.

Plant materials should be collected from young fir, one and a half to two meters high, growing in a sunny clearing in a forest or planting. The best time for harvesting is considered to be from mid-March to early September. In the spring it is better to collect young cones and shoots, and in the fall pine needles should be harvested.

It is very important that the tree looks healthy and has a developed, dense crown. Harvesting parts of plants growing near the road or in dusty places is strictly prohibited.

Classic cooking method

A simple way that even a beginner can make fir oil is the infusion method. For this you will need:

  • Collect young shoots and cones of the plant, wash them thoroughly with cold running water and dry.
  • Grind the plant material into small pieces.
  • Fill pre-sterilized 0.5-liter jars tightly to 3/4 of the volume with cut shoots.
  • Pour the raw material with refined vegetable oil (it is best to use olive oil), heated to 80 degrees.
  • Close the jar tightly with a lid and place it in a cool, dark place (cellar, pantry) for 40 days.
  • After this time, the jars must be opened, the resulting oil heated to 50 degrees and poured into the new shoots.
  • The infusion procedure is repeated, after which the resulting composition must be carefully filtered and bottled.

The oil obtained by this method has the highest concentration of beneficial substances. The prepared fir extract should be stored in a dry place, protected from sunlight, at room temperature, in dark glass containers.

Alternative way

For those who don't want to spend several months extracting fir oil, there is a quick preparation method that is more labor-intensive than infusion. To make fir oil yourself using this method, you need to follow a certain algorithm:

  • Thoroughly washed, dried fresh pine needles should be folded into a jar (1 liter), not reaching the top 5 cm.
  • Pour the prepared raw materials with any oil (sunflower, corn, olive) so that it completely covers the coniferous blank.
  • Close the jar tightly with a lid and place in a large saucepan filled with water to the level of the pine needles in a water bath.
  • After five hours of cooking, you need to open the jar, pour the oil into another container with fresh pine needles and repeat the process again.
  • The finished oil is poured into pre-prepared containers and tightly closed.

The resulting natural medicine, after consultation with a specialist, can be used to lubricate inflamed tonsils for tonsillitis and tonsillitis, instilled into the nose for infectious and chronic rhinitis, and used for inhalation for inflammation of the ENT organs. Baths with fir oil and aromatherapy are popular to prevent colds.

Doctors note the best effect from using self-prepared fir oil.

Of course, fir oil can be easily purchased, but in this article we will still talk about how to make it yourself. And you will always have time to buy!

Recipe for making your own fir oil

So, how can you make fir oil? The main problem you may encounter is the lack of fir needles. If you can get pine needles, then you shouldn’t have any problems with cooking in the future. The recipe is quite simple and straightforward.

Take fir needles and cut them together with branches without shoots 1 - 1.5 cm long, fill a 2 liter jar with them. Just keep in mind that you don’t need to fill it to the edges, but step back 5 cm from the top.

Next, fill everything with vegetable or olive oil to the level of the fir cutting. Close the jar with a metal lid (only without a rubber band) and place it in an enamel pan, on the bottom of which place thin twigs.

The pan needs to be filled approximately halfway with water, be sure to cover with a lid and bring to a boil on the fire.

When the oil boils, reduce the heat and cook the entire contents for exactly 5 hours. At the same time, be sure to monitor the amount of water. It will boil and as it boils you need to add boiling water.

After 5 hours of cooking, remove the pan from the stove, remove the jar of pine needles from it, drain the oil into another, clean jar, squeeze out the pine needles, and then throw away.

The jar needs to be filled with new fir branches and filled with oil that you drained, that is, oil that has already been boiled previously for 5 hours.

After this, you can turn off and pour the oil into bottles or vials.

Several recipes for using fir oil

For radiculitis and diseases of the peripheral nervous system

Take a small amount of fir oil (store-bought or prepared according to this recipe) and carefully rub it into the lumbar area and other problem areas.

Before rubbing, be sure to take a hot bath or at least warm it up.

The course of treatment for the above diseases ranges from 10 to 15 similar procedures, after which, as a rule, noticeable relief occurs.

For wet eczema

For eczema, an ointment made from any animal fat (goose fat, pork fat, badger fat or regular baby cream) and fir oil in a ratio of 6/3 helps a lot. The recipe for preparing and using the ointment is as follows:

Mix everything well and apply to sore spots. Place compress paper on top and tie it. Such compresses should be done 2 – 3 times a day. The course of treatment is from 12 to 24 days.

The same ointment can be used to remove bedsores and diaper rash by rubbing the sore spots with it.

Treatment of chronic sore throat with fir oil

For chronic sore throat, in addition to lubricating the tonsils, you need to put 1 - 2 drops of oil into your nose. Naturally, this should be done only if the oil does not cause allergies in the patient.

For bronchitis and pneumonia

To treat these diseases, it is recommended to wipe yourself with fir oil and do simple inhalations. Pour boiling water into a pan, add 2-4 drops of fir oil, cover your head with a blanket and breathe.

It is necessary to rub fir oil into the collar area of the back, as well as into the chest area, at least 4 - 5 times a day. It can also be useful to massage your feet.

After rubbing the patient, you need to wrap him in the same compress paper, wrap him well in a blanket and let him drink tea.

That's all for me. As you can see, preparing fir oil, even at home, is not at all difficult and it is not at all necessary to buy it. All you need to prepare it is the presence of fir needles.
