This berry is a wonderful natural healer.
Until recently, I knew absolutely nothing about these properties.

I heard from friends who talked about rowan from a gourmet point of view, about very tasty jam, and I was even lucky enough to try wonderful wine from this berry.
But, unfortunately, I didn’t know that the plant could heal.

But in our time, the problem of lack of information is solved easily and quickly. If you are also interested in this wonderful plant, then this article will help satisfy your curiosity.
So, let's get acquainted.

Chokeberry: a brief historical background

Chokeberry or chokeberry, popularly called chokeberry or simply black rowan, is a small shrub from the Rosaceae family.

Canada is the homeland of the chokeberry. Its wild representatives occupy impressively sized territories in this country.

The indigenous inhabitants of these lands, the Indians, were well aware of the medicinal properties of chokeberry and actively used its juice to treat burns, as well as in preparing various dishes from it.

In the 19th century, chokeberry first came to Europe and Russia. The wild one, naturally, was not popular because it could not boast of either an attractive appearance or the taste of the fruit.

And the Russian biologist and breeder Ivan Vladimirovich Michurin gave us cultivated chokeberry.

Thanks to a new set of chromosomes, black rowan acquired such qualities as unpretentiousness and frost resistance.
The berries can be eaten already at the end of September-October, when they are fully ripe.

Chokeberry is one of those plants that can help overcome ailments and diseases that overtake us in winter.
Fruits can be harvested both before and during the first autumn frosts.

Ripe black-purple berries have an intense ruby-colored flesh.
Having bitten the fruit, you will feel a sweet and sour taste, slightly tart and slightly astringent.

At first glance, the berries, which are unattractive, are certainly very useful and are successfully used in folk medicine. The name Aros itself translated from Greek means “benefit”.

  • Chokeberry: how to prepare and how to store?

    Many people are put off by the astringent taste of chokeberry berries. Even if a tree grows in their yard, people do not know what to do with the fruits.

    So it turns out that the main consumers of these invaluable natural healers are birds.

    Not eating berries is a big misconception, especially for those with high blood pressure. After all, black rowan really helps hypertensive patients.

    At the end of October, when the first frosts appear, the plant accumulates the maximum amount of useful substances in its fruits.

    That’s when you can start collecting and preparing ripened fruits.

    But it is important not only to choose the right harvest time, but also to store the berries correctly in order to preserve as much as possible all the beneficial substances of the little doctors.

    The first and easiest way is to freeze and store in the freezer. To do this, the fruits should be thoroughly cleaned of branches and leaves, washed and dried.

    Then place in plastic bags in a single layer and freeze.

    The second method is also not difficult to implement. They can either be dried in the oven at 60 degrees, or dried in the sun, if it is still quite active in your area at this time of year.

    Chokeberry: pressure will return to normal

    The easiest and most effective way to reduce blood pressure is to eat fresh berries.

    If you eat only 100 grams of fruit three times a day, you will soon notice a clear improvement in your well-being and normalization of blood pressure.

    What else can you do to lower your blood pressure?

    It is very useful, including for hypertensive patients, to drink freshly squeezed black rowan juice. How to cook it?

    The recipe is simple and unpretentious:

    1. Peel the berries and rinse well.
    2. Squeeze out the juice, about ¾ cup. This is for a day.
    3. Add 1 tsp. honey
    4. Divide the received medicine into three doses.
    5. Take 30 minutes before meals.

    If you have dried berries rather than fresh ones, you can prepare an infusion in a thermos according to the following recipe.

    Pour three tablespoons of fruit into two glasses of boiling water, close and leave to infuse for 24 hours. Take half an hour before meals before each meal.

    The following recipe involves adding sugar - this is syrup. We will need:

    • 50 pieces of cherry leaves;
    • 800 ml water;
    • 0.6 kg sugar;
    • 15 gr. citric acid.

    We clean and wash the berries. Boil water and put cherry fruits and leaves into the pan.

    After boiling for a few minutes, remove the leaves and add citric acid.

    Leave the mixture for a day. Then add sugar and cook over low heat until it boils. Hold for another two minutes. That's it, the syrup is ready, you can roll it into jars.

    To normalize blood pressure, take 1-2 spoons per day.

    Also, to reduce blood pressure with warm tea (not hot!), you can take a spoonful of chokeberry jam several times a day.

    The recipe will not cause you any difficulties. For 1.3 kg of sugar, 1 kg of berries and 1 glass of water are required. The sequence is as follows: first boil water, add sugar and make syrup.

    After the syrup boils, add the fruits, washed and blanched for 7 minutes. Boil over low heat for 10-15 minutes, set aside the mixture for 3-4 hours.

    Then put it on the fire again until it boils for 15 minutes. All the jam is ready, put it in sterilized hot jars and screw on the lids.

    Store either in the refrigerator or at room temperature.

    You can also mix a tablespoon of honey with 50 grams of berries. To get results, take for at least 10 days, but no more than 30.

    Chokeberry: contraindications

    The presence of many useful and medicinal properties of the berry does not exclude cases when its use is highly undesirable; in a word, any medicine has its contraindications.

    Chokeberry is a small densely branched deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family. The fruits of chokeberry ripen in August - September. As a rule, they are dark brown or black-purple in color, with a slight waxy coating and dark ruby flesh.

    Since chokeberry is a medicinal plant, its fruits can be used for medicinal purposes both fresh and dried.

    To dry chokeberry for short-term storage (six months), cut rowan umbrellas are strung on a thick thread, fishing line or wire and hung in a dry room with good ventilation. This way the berries can hang all winter. At the same time, microbes will not grow in them, and they will not undergo fermentation.

    To dry berries for long-term storage (a year or more), after harvesting, rowan berries are separated from the stalks, sorted, washed and dried on a towel. After this, the berries are laid out on trays or on a shallow rack in a layer of 2–3 cm and dried in the sun in the fresh air. True, for long-term storage you can dry rowan berries in the oven. First, they are dried for 20 - 30 minutes at a temperature of 40 - 45 degrees, then the temperature is increased to 60 degrees and drying continues until the berries, when squeezed with your fingers, stop releasing juice.

    It is important to remember that dried berries should not change color to reddish or brown. A change in the color of the berries indicates that the temperature regime has been disturbed and the berries have almost completely lost their vitamins.

    Benefit

    1. The fruits of dried chokeberry are used to treat sclerosis, hypertension, decreased blood clotting, hemorrhagic diathesis, capillary toxicosis, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, allergies, glomerulonephritis, thyrotoxicosis (included in medicinal preparations).

    2. In addition to all of the above, dried chokeberry fruits are used for severe bleeding, vitamin deficiency and radiation damage to certain areas of the skin.

    3. Dried chokeberry berries are valuable medicinal raw materials. It was revealed that in 3 tbsp. spoons (50 g of dry fruits) of chokeberry contain a daily dose of vitamin P.

    Harm

    Chokeberry should not be used for hypotension, gastric and duodenal ulcers, hyperacid gastritis (with increased acidity of gastric juice), chronic constipation, hemorrhoids with a tendency to thrombosis, increased blood clotting, and thrombophlebitis. Before using drugs or products from the fruits of chokeberry, you should definitely consult your doctor.

    Chokeberry (chokeberry) - medicinal properties, recipes, application

    Other names - chokeberry, black rowan, chokeberry.

    Chokeberry is a small shrub or tree, up to 2.5 meters high. The leaves are oblong, oval, somewhat similar to cherry leaves.

    The fruits are round in shape, black with a bluish coating, up to 12 mm in diameter. They taste sweet, slightly tart (especially when unripe), but pleasant.

    Chokeberry is often grown as an ornamental, fruit or medicinal plant. Many summer residents and amateur gardeners consider it their duty to plant chokeberry on their plot.

    The fruits and leaves of chokeberry are used for medicinal purposes. The leaves are harvested immediately after flowering. The fruits are harvested in the fall when they are fully ripe. Rowan berries are dried in the open air or in dryers, with good ventilation, at a temperature of 50-60 degrees. Store dried berries and leaves in paper bags or boxes in a dry place for no more than 2 years.

    Chokeberry berries can also be preserved fresh: the berries, picked with stalks and leaves, are placed in a dark, cool place (no more than + 1 degree C), where they are stored for up to six months. As needed, berries can be used for various purposes, including cooking.

    Chokeberry (chokeberry) is rich in many useful substances - vitamins C, P, B1, B2, E, K, B6, beta-carotene, macro- and microelements (iron, copper, boron, manganese, molybdenum, fluorine), sugars ( glucose, sucrose, fructose), as well as tannins and pectin.

    Chokeberry has many medicinal properties, it lowers cholesterol levels in the blood, normalizes blood pressure, helps strengthen the walls of blood vessels, improves their elasticity and firmness.

    The value of chokeberry (chokeberry) is also that, thanks to the substances it contains, it promotes the active expansion of capillaries and blood vessels. It has been experimentally established that, thanks to its capillary-strengthening and vasodilating properties, rowan fruits are one of the best remedies for the treatment of hypertension. Drink it in the form of juice, no more than 2 tablespoons per dose and 3 times a day. You can also take chokeberry in the form of an infusion (tea).

    Scientific studies have shown that chokeberry improves immunity and has a positive effect on the functioning of the endocrine system.

    Chokeberry is used as an antispasmodic, vasodilator, hemostatic, hematopoietic, appetizing, choleretic and diuretic.

    Drinking juice or decoction of chokeberry berries helps to dilate blood vessels, resulting in an increase in their permeability and activation of the functions of the hematopoietic organs, which is useful for radiation sickness and bleeding. Chokeberry juice is a good therapeutic and prophylactic remedy for rheumatism and radiation sickness.

    Chokeberry helps regulate digestion, improves appetite, increases acidity, activates the liver, promotes the formation and discharge of bile.

    For burns, apply fresh chokeberry juice to the affected areas. It is useful to combine the juice and fruits of chokeberry with the fruits of black currants and rose hips, with the addition of honey.

    Here are some recipes for using chokeberry.

    Chokeberry juice is taken 1-3 tablespoons. spoons, 3 times a day, 30 minutes before meals, or eat berries - 5-7 pieces daily for the above diseases.

    Chokeberry, berry decoction : take 1 tbsp. spoon of berries, pour 1 glass of water, boil for 1 minute, set aside and leave for another 1 hour. Take the decoction 0.25-0.5 cups, 3 times a day before meals.

    Chokeberry compote (for preservation): wash the rowan berries and put them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes (sterilize). Then, fill the jars 1/3 with these berries and fill them with boiling sweet syrup. Cover with sterile lids and roll up. Use sugar at the rate of 1/2 cup per liter jar.

    Aronia fruit jam prepare as follows: pour 2 kg of rowan fruits with hot sugar syrup (2 kg of sugar, pour 0.5 liters of water, stir until dissolved, then boil). Let it sit for 8 hours, then boil and stand again for 8 hours, then cook until tender, until the berries settle to the bottom.

    Especially appreciated for its popularity wine from chokeberry (chokeberry) . It is highly vitaminized and has medicinal properties. They make it like this: wash and chop the berries (you can do this in different ways, by hand in a mortar, grind in a meat grinder, food processor, etc.), then dilute this whole mass with boiled water, approximately 1:1 by volume, less is possible , and add sugar at the rate of approximately 1/2 cup per liter.

    Mix everything thoroughly until the sugar is completely dissolved and place under a water seal. Place in a warm place and let it ferment. After 4-5 days, a maximum of a week, the berries will float to the surface and the young chokeberry wine will begin to ferment. Now the wort must be strained through a crusher, and the berries must be squeezed out and discarded.

    We put the wine under the water seal again, this time before the end of fermentation. Afterwards, it must be carefully drained through a hose into another container, and the sediment must be thrown away. Now you can make adjustments (add sugar to taste) and place in a cool, dark place. That's it, chokeberry wine is almost ready; after standing for several months it will become clean and transparent.

    Chokeberry vinegar . If you have a good harvest of chokeberries, you can also make vinegar from the berries, a very good thing for salads. For this you will need: juice - 400 ml, cherry leaves - 20 g, 200 g of sugar and 1 liter of water. Pour the juice, 1 liter of boiled water into a 3 liter jar, add sugar, chopped cherry leaves, mix thoroughly, cover the neck with gauze and let it sour for several weeks. As soon as it brightens (and this may take 1-1.5 months), you can bottle it and seal it with corks. Or you can cast some for your own needs, and keep the rest in a common jar with a closed lid for a year, since it will give some more sediment throughout the year. It is better to store supplies in a cool place, at a temperature of 5-15°C.

    Chokeberry, contraindications . The fruits of chokeberry are contraindicated in cases of increased blood clotting, increased acidity of gastric juice, gastric and duodenal ulcers. It is not recommended for people with low blood pressure (hypotonics).

    Brought to the European part of the Earth at the end of the 19th century from North America, where it grows happily and still occupies a very vast territory. People of a distant continent knew about its beneficial properties long before Europeans visited it. It was used to treat many skin diseases. Europeans grew this funny plant as an ornamental. Only in the mid-20th century, when a series of laboratory studies were carried out, did black rowan begin to be used as a medicine. Until then, it was only a plant that was planted in squares, parks, and summer cottages for decorative purposes.

    What does black rowan look like?

    In encyclopedias you can find another name for chokeberry - chokeberry. It has a round shape, black with a slight bluish tint. Black rowan grows up to 12 mm in diameter; the photo shows what this berry looks like. Unripe fruits are slightly tart, but when they ripen, they become sweet and pleasant to the taste. The plant is usually planted in summer cottages as an ornamental plant, and the fruits are used as a cure for many diseases.

    What vitamins are fruits rich in?

    Black rowan has a rich set of useful vitamins and microelements: P, C, PP, E, as well as B vitamins, carotene, boron, iron, manganese, copper. It is these components of rowan that allow it to be very useful both for the prevention of diseases and for their treatment.

    The benefits of chokeberry

    The berries contain sugar, which is represented by fructose and lactose. They are easily digestible, and this is a very useful property for people suffering from diabetes.

    By taking rowan fruits, you can stimulate brain activity and normalize blood pressure. Black rowan also has a beneficial effect on the functioning of the immune system. It is worth noting that it is collected at the end of September. Just before winter, when you need to charge your body with all the useful substances, this product will come in handy.

    It is useful for people who have trouble sleeping, as well as those who suffer from overwork. Used in the treatment of measles, scarlet fever, typhus. There are cases when the properties of black rowan helped treat radiation sickness.

    It promotes better kidney function, treats atherosclerosis and rheumatism. There is no need to be afraid that black rowan increases blood pressure, since its fruits are used to treat and normalize hypertension of the first and second degrees. It also lowers cholesterol levels and fights high acidity.

    Interesting fact: the development of dysentery bacillus and Staphylococcus aureus is also delayed due to the consumption of rowan berries.

    Due to the high iodine content, black rowan is recommended for people who suffer from diffuse toxic goiter. If you use it regularly, you can have a positive effect on the state of the endocrine system.

    Both the fruits of rowan and its leaves are useful. The largest accumulation of beneficial substances is found in the skin of the berries; they have a particularly good effect on strengthening blood vessels. The leaves are used to improve liver function.

    Contraindications for the use of fruits

    Although this miracle berry has a number of positive characteristics, even it has contraindications. Due to the fact that it contains organic acids, its use for gastritis and peptic ulcers of the stomach and duodenum is undesirable. But if there are no exacerbations, then it can be used only in small quantities.

    It is also undesirable to use it if you have low blood pressure or constipation; you should be careful if you have increased blood clotting.

    Consumption of rowan during pregnancy

    There are practically no contraindications for black rowan during pregnancy. Due to the fact that it contains flavonoids, it helps reduce capillary fragility. Also, regular consumption of fruits has a good effect on digestion, improves appetite, normalizes blood pressure and prevents the development of anemia in both mother and child.

    The weakened body of a pregnant woman is saturated with useful vitamins, due to which the immune system is strengthened. Folic acid contained in berries plays a huge role in cell growth, normalizes the nervous system and has a beneficial effect on the health of the woman and the fetus.

    However, it has one negative effect - a large amount of rowan consumed can lower blood pressure.

    For what diseases is black rowan used?

    It is important to note that black rowan does not lose its beneficial properties with any of the treatments. So it can be used in the form of jam, juice, jam, syrup, tea. It is especially useful in winter and spring, when the immune system is weakened.

    Recipes from black rowan for various diseases

    • High blood pressure: boil 1 kg of rowan with 1 glass of water for 30 minutes. The mixture is filtered and the resulting juice is consumed, 1 tbsp. l. 2 times a day.
    • Gastritis with low acidity: drink freshly squeezed juice, 0.25 cups.
    • Hypertension: mix 50 g of rowan with a tablespoon of honey, consume for 40 days.
    • Atherosclerosis: grind 1 kg of fruit with 700 g of sugar, take 100 g per day.
    • Hypovitaminosis, anemia: black currant mixed with rowan. You can also use rosehip decoction instead of currants.
    • Prevention. Dry fruits are brewed for 10 minutes, consume half a glass per day.

    How to prepare medicinal raw materials for the winter?

    For harvesting fruits that will be used as medicines, take well-ripened berries.

    Black rowan is dried in a well-ventilated place; the photo above shows how to do it correctly. If the weather does not allow air drying, then you can use an oven with the door open. Black rowan will not lose its beneficial properties and will also be suitable for treatment.

    Berries can also be frozen. But this must be done quickly, using quick freezing. Such fruits store well. Just re-freezing is not allowed.

    A very universal medicine is dried black rowan. How to preserve it is an individual matter. For example, it can be in a glass jar or in a bag made of cotton or linen material.

    In addition, black rowan is used in many other places. Recipes for preparing various preserves, jams, compotes, and syrups are passed down from generation to generation.

    Black rowan berry jam

    Ingredients: 1 kg of black rowan, 1.5 kg of sugar, 1 glass of any juice, 2 glasses of water, 3 g of citric acid.

    The berry is separated from the seed, washed and placed in the oven in a container with a closed lid for 2-4 hours.

    The syrup is prepared from water, juice, sugar. The berries are dipped into the finished mixture and cooked until the rowan becomes transparent. Before the jam is removed from the heat, citric acid is added to it. Hot jam is poured into jars.

    Black rowan syrup

    Ingredients: 1 kg of rowan, 700 g of sugar, 800 g of water, 50 g of cherry leaves, 15 g of citric acid.

    The fruits are cleared of leaves and washed in warm water.

    All the water is poured into the pan and brought to a boil. Rowan and cherry leaves are lowered into the water. After everything has boiled for a few minutes, the leaves are removed and thrown away. Citric acid is added.

    The resulting mixture is infused for a day, after which it is filtered. The resulting sediment and berries are removed, and sugar is added to the remaining liquid. Place the pan with the mixture on the fire and bring to a boil - enough for everything to boil for 5 minutes. After this, the syrup is poured into jars and rolled up.

    The syrup is used as an additive to desserts and can be used to make drinks. It is also suitable for normalizing blood pressure.

    Chokeberry pie

    Ingredients: wheat bread 200 gr. black rowan 2.5 cups, apples 3 pcs. sugar 0.5 cups, 2 tbsp. l. milk, one egg, 2 tbsp. l. butter, 2 tbsp. l. breadcrumbs, black rowan syrup.

    The bread is cut into thin slices and then dipped in a mixture of milk, egg and sugar. The berries are washed and covered with sugar, apples are added to them, preferably sour varieties. Place slices of bread on a baking sheet greased with butter and sprinkled with breadcrumbs. A mixture of rowan berries and apples is placed on top, after which the whole thing is covered with another layer of bread. The dessert is poured with an egg-milk mixture and baked in the oven until golden brown. The cooled pie can be poured with syrup or sprinkled with powdered sugar.

    So, chokeberry is a very useful and well-known berry, which is used to treat many diseases, as well as to prevent and strengthen the immune system. The bush itself is used as an ornamental plant and decorates personal plots.

    Rowan can be used to prepare compotes, syrups, tinctures, tea, baking, etc. It should be noted that the leaves also have beneficial properties. Most often, the berries are used to lower blood pressure. It is better to consult a doctor before use. Although this product is useful, in some cases the consumption of rowan is undesirable or the daily intake must be reduced.

    Preface

    Many of us have heard about chokeberry. But not everyone knows what this plant is and whether it has any relation to the mountain ash. Let’s try to figure this out, and at the same time talk about the beneficial qualities of chokeberry.

    Where it grows best, taste qualities

    Chokeberry, black rowan, black chokeberry - all these are the names of one shrub from the Rosaceae family. It is grown as an ornamental or medicinal plant. Its homeland is North America; the shrub entered the territory of the Russian Empire at the end of the 19th century.

    Initially, it was known only as an ornamental plant, but, through the efforts of the famous scientist I.V. Michurin, in 1935 the Likernaya variety was developed, which was distinguished by large fruits and a rather sweet taste. Later, this variety became the ancestor of a line of new varieties, which, in addition to decorative functions, had medicinal and table value.

    The black fruits really resemble the well-known mountain ash in appearance. They have a tart, sweet taste with a slight sourness.

    Did you know?At the beginning of the 16th century, ubiquitous merchants from the Netherlands established contact with one of the tribes of the indigenous inhabitants of North America - the Delawares. Negociants from Holland paid attention to flour pureed from local berries. It had an unusual pleasant taste and, according to the Indians, a lot of useful qualities. This is how people in the Old World learned about chokeberry, later called chokeberry.

    The nutritional value

    Chokeberry has great nutritional value (per 100 g of product):

    • calorie content - 55 kcal;
    • proteins - 1.5 g;
    • fats - 0.2 g;
    • carbohydrates - 10.9 g;
    • fiber - 4.1 g;
    • water - 80.5 g;
    • pectins and tannins - 2.5 g;
    • iodine - 5.5 mcg;
    • potassium - 160 mcg;
    • vitamins: P (up to 0.5 mg), as well as A, C, E, group B.

    Collection and storage

    You need to collect chokeberry during the day, in dry weather. In order for the fruits to be stored well, it is necessary that they are not raw at the time of picking. Berries should be picked as a whole bunch - this way they will be better stored. Even properly harvested fresh chokeberry will not last long. In order to extend its shelf life, it is necessary to dry or freeze the berries.

    Important! It is very important not to overdry chokeberries when drying them in the oven. The fact that the berry is overdried is indicated by the appearance of a red-brown tint on the surface of the fruit.

    Proper drying is carried out as follows:

    1. The fruits are torn off from the bunches, then they must be washed and the water allowed to drain.
    2. Place rowan fruits in a thin layer on a baking sheet on which paper is spread and place in the oven.
    3. Maintain at a temperature of + 45 ° C for half an hour, then increase the temperature to + 60 ° C and dry until completely cooked.

    The finished dried and cooled fruits can be poured into plastic bottles and sealed hermetically. You can hang the fruits in a cool, dry place without removing them from the branches. This way they can also be stored for quite a long time.
