Transferring a student to home schooling. How to homeschool your child

Formally, it seems to be the same thing: the child studies at home. But in fact, these are completely different concepts. To avoid confusion, we will talk about the essence of each of them, revealing the advantages and disadvantages.

Homeschooling

This is a way to organize the educational process for children who are seriously ill. According to the law, homeschooling is not a form of education.

If the child’s intelligence is intact, the child can study according to general education programs, but at home or in a hospital. For example, if it is necessary to give injections by the hour or the school is not wheelchair accessible.

For students in need of long-term treatment, disabled children who, for health reasons, cannot attend educational organizations, training in educational programs of primary general, basic general and secondary general education is organized at home or in medical organizations.

Article 66 of the Federal Law “On Education”.

A child studying at home remains in the school population. He is given textbooks, he, like everyone else, writes tests and passes exams. If desired, he can attend some lessons at school, and if possible, study using distance learning technologies (more on this later).

The list of diseases that give the right to home education was approved by the Ministry of Health in 2016. To transfer a child to such training, a medical and social examination report and a statement from the parents are required.

Based on medical documents and regulations of the constituent entity of the Federation, the school issues an order to organize home education. An individual curriculum and schedule are approved, and teachers who will attend the child are determined.

Pros of homeschooling

  1. Enables sick children to study in regular rather than specialized schools.
  2. Allows you to keep up with the school program during long-term treatment or rehabilitation.

Disadvantages of homeschooling

  1. It cannot be used if the child is in poor health but not disabled.
  2. The curriculum includes only basic disciplines. In technology, life safety and other “optional” subjects, the child most likely will not be certified.
  3. Often teachers have neither material nor personal interest, and they are not very conscientious about their responsibilities towards homeworkers.
  4. Almost complete lack of socialization.

Distance learning

This is a way for teachers to interact with students at a distance. When a child communicates with a teacher via video call, does assignments online, or simply submits some work electronically. In this case, certifications are usually taken in person.

Legally, distance learning is not a form of education. Children studying in this way are usually part-time and master the program using distance learning technologies (DET).

Distance educational technologies are understood as educational technologies implemented mainly using information and telecommunication networks with indirect (at a distance) interaction between students and teaching staff.

Article 16 of the Federal Law “On Education”

The procedure for using DOT is regulated by the Ministry of Education and Science on January 9, 2014. In regular schools, they are most often used as an aid in teaching children with disabilities, as well as for conducting lessons in remote settlements.

Pros of distance learning

  1. Allows you not to go to school every day. This is especially true for children who live far from her and have health problems.
  2. You can study without leaving home. The main thing is to have a computer and the Internet at hand.

Disadvantages of distance learning

  1. Not all schools work with DOT. Most often they are private and paid.
  2. The child is part of the school population and must obey its rules: attend consultations and exams on strictly defined dates, complete assignments according to a set schedule, and so on.
  3. Live contact with teachers is usually minimal; most of the program is designed for self-study.

Family learning

This is a form of receiving education outside an educational organization. This implies a conscious voluntary departure from school and the education of the child through the family. At the same time, he, like all schoolchildren, receives a certificate, since he is required to pass the state final certification.

In the Russian Federation, education can be obtained in organizations engaged in educational activities; outside organizations carrying out educational activities (in the form of family education and self-education).

Article 17 of the Federal Law “On Education”

The reasons for leaving for family education are varied:

  • Parents and children are dissatisfied with the school. When they teach something and somehow or there are constant conflicts.
  • The child's abilities are above average and he is bored in regular lessons. The opposite is also possible, when your own pace of training is required.
  • The child is a professional athlete or musician and does not have time to attend classes.
  • The family often moves or lives in another country.

The transition to family education is carried out as follows: notification of local authorities, selection of schools for passing intermediate (final) certifications and organization of the educational process.

Confusion between homeschooling and homeschooling arises because in both cases the child is in a home environment. But home-based learning is not a form of education, but a necessary measure for children with disabilities. Homeworkers are assigned teachers who receive a salary from the school. Family education, on the contrary, is a manifestation of freedom, and it is available to absolutely everyone. The organization of the educational process lies with the parents; it is not provided for in all regions.

Family and distance learning are confused due to the fact that parents often connect online schools for their children. This is really very convenient, since moms and dads don’t have to deal with the kids themselves. For example, at Foxford Home School, lessons are held in the format of webinars, and they are taught by professional teachers.

The benefits of family education

  1. This is a full-fledged form of education.
  2. This is the most flexible form of education, giving maximum freedom - from choosing a program to choosing a school for certification.
  3. Available to everyone.
  4. Allows you to give your child high-quality knowledge, taking into account his interests and needs.
  5. You can study online at a convenient pace, without being tied to the location and rules of a particular school.

Disadvantages of homeschooling

  1. Not all children are able to learn without supervision from the school, and parents have the resources to streamline the learning process.
  2. Family education is still new in Russia. We have to explain that you can study outside of school and that’s normal.

conclusions

  • Home-based and distance learning are not forms of education in the Russian Federation and are not suitable for everyone.
  • Family education is a form of education established by federal legislation. It is available to everyone.
  • Family education is confused with home education, since in both cases the child does not go to school.
  • Family and distance learning are mixed, because in both cases learning takes place remotely, using gadgets and various programs.

For greater clarity, we will demonstrate the differences between the three types of homeschooling through a table.

The trend of abandoning school education is gaining popularity every year. The child is home-schooled and then takes exams externally. For a student to study at home, the state must provide certain grounds.

Reasons for transferring a child to home schooling

The term individual learning refers to different types of study without attending school. They differ from each other depending on the reasons:

  • Family - organization of studies by parents who act as teachers.
  • Home-based study with partial attendance at school for medical reasons.
  • Individual training at school due to health reasons - teachers come to your home by prior arrangement. Designed for disabled children.
  • Externship. Suitable for schoolchildren with a high level of knowledge.
  • Distance learning. Convenient for those who want to gain knowledge from more qualified teachers. Communication with them occurs remotely via the Internet.

How to Homeschool

Transferring a child to home schooling in Russia is possible with permission from the education authority. They will make a positive decision in the following situations:

  • the student is mentally ahead of his peers;
  • Parents' work involves constant moving;
  • the child is engaged in some activity that will later become his profession (artist, athlete, musician, etc.);
  • ideological or moral principles of parents;
  • due to serious health problems, the student does not keep up with the school curriculum (oncology, epilepsy and others).

For health

In this case, the basis for home study is medical indications. Among them are the presence of chronic diseases in the student, long-term outpatient treatment or the protracted nature of the disease. Actions for parents to transition to home education:

  1. A medical certificate must be issued through the KEC (control and expert commission). You should contact your doctor to receive written recommendations. After they are submitted to the KEC, a conclusion will be issued. The medical certificate records the diagnosis and duration of recommended study at home (from 1 month to 1 year), includes the signatures of doctors and the round seal of the clinic.
  2. A written application must be made to the head of the educational institution in which the child studied, requesting that the student be transferred to an individual curriculum. A KEC certificate is attached to it.
  3. Based on the documents received, the school administration does not have the right to refuse parents’ request. Management is obliged to organize an individual lesson schedule and intermediate testing.

For family education

If an individual form of education at school is expensive for parents, then they have the right to teach their child independently. According to the Education Law of the Russian Federation, this can be done at any time during the academic year. Steps parents need to take:

  1. Write an application to the director with a request to expel your child from school, indicating the reason.
  2. Write a notice of your decision to the Department of Education.
  3. Also write another application to the director with a request to enroll the student in this educational institution for external certification.

Distance education

Important! An educational institution must have a license to conduct distance learning.

Selected at will or according to urgent need. To transfer a student you must:

  1. Write a statement of expulsion to the director of the school where the child studied.
  2. Take away his personal business.
  3. Notify the municipal education committee about this (by phone or in writing).
  4. Choose an institution that will teach remotely.

They switch to distance education for several reasons. Among them:

  • education for a disabled child;
  • individual interaction between student and teacher;
  • education during illness;
  • gifted student;
  • additional education for students of art, sports and other vocational schools.

The concept of homeschooling (translated from English as “home schooling”, has become increasingly popular lately. In order to understand what it is, I suggest first turning to Wikipedia:

“The term homeschooling refers to the education of children at home, usually by parents, although the involvement of other teachers is also possible, as opposed to educating children in public or private schools.”

Moreover, the concept is not limited to the fact that children study at home. Homeschooling has several types:

Unschooling- this is teaching children without a pre-thought-out and clearly scheduled program. Unschooling also does not have predetermined goals and objectives. But at the same time, the method does not mean that children are not taught anything. This is a method that involves the absence of a pre-planned training program.

The term unschooling was coined in 1977 by John Holt in the magazine Growing Up Without School. Holt said that children learn best from experiences based on their interests. He suggested that parents abandon artificial learning conditions and use real life for this. John Holt criticized the school system and wrote that compulsory schooling was harmful to the health and psyche of children. As a result, he proposed getting rid of schools and systematic education in general. Adherents of the theory consider such learning to be natural, based on the needs of the child himself.

What forms of homeschooling are there?

Family learning

Parents enter into an agreement with the school, which specifies the forms and deadlines for certification, the deadlines for completing practical and laboratory work. The child can go to classes that he likes.

Externship

The child independently studies the school curriculum at a pace convenient for him and then takes intermediate exams. You can study two years of the school curriculum in six months.

Homeschooling

You can agree on home training if you have medical recommendations. Then school teachers come home and teach classes - from 8 to 12 hours a week, depending on the age of the child.

Nonschooling- here the child is really not taught anything specifically, nothing is forbidden to him. Everything that he wants to do himself is seen as a natural need to gain new knowledge.

Homeschooling advantages and disadvantages

Homeschoolers' Arguments

— School discourages a person’s natural desire for knowledge (curiosity), replacing it with discipline and the desire to get good grades.

— Normal socialization does not take place at school, since the school community is not built in the same way as a normal community is built. Socialization is replaced by “social Darwinism” (“survival of the fittest”) or teacher discipline. Also, schoolchildren cannot regulate the amount of communication, since they are constantly in the company of other children.

— Constant pressure to study discourages not only the desire, but also the ability to study independently, set tasks for yourself and solve them, even if you want to do it.

— School unifies children and smoothes out individuality.

— The school limits the child’s cognitive interest in the “here and now” situation, replacing it with the need to follow the school curriculum.

Criticism of homeschooling

— Without school, children do not socialize, do not learn to communicate and work in a team.

— Without school, children will not receive systematic fundamental knowledge and will not learn to think. School still teaches you to think.

— Not all parents can stay at home with their children. And not all parents can effectively organize their children’s education outside of school.

— In the future, there may be difficulties adapting to university studies and finding a job

Marina Ozerova, head of the remote family center, educational psychologist, Israel

I choose home education primarily because I want to provide my child with an individual approach to learning. I want freedom of choice - what and how to teach, when and how much. And, the main thing is that training is not divorced from practical activities and the active life of the family.
The degree of sociability (which is often confused with socialization) depends not on home training, but on the character and temperament of the person. In addition to home (or school) learning, the ability to be in society depends on many factors.

Homeschooling (homeschooling, from the English homeschooling - home education) is popular in the USA and Canada, and has been practiced there for many years. In Russia, homeschooling, although enshrined in law, still causes skepticism on the part of educational institutions. And parents have to be literally pioneers.Teacher-psychologist and mother of a home-schooled child Anna Devyatka talks about the pros, cons and nuances of home schooling.

For what?

We will start with the fact that it is important for every parent who is interested in home schooling to clearly understand their motives - what problems the family wants to solve with the help of home education. Someone wants to give their child a better education than at school, reducing the hours of general education subjects, such as music and drawing, and increasing the hours of specialized subjects, for example, physics, history, biology. For some parents, the issue of preserving the health of the child is acute. And by teaching him at home, they hope to avoid being overwhelmed. Some people, with the help of family education, combine the beginning of their child’s sports career and education.

What types of homeschooling are there?

Not all homeschoolers decide to teach their children at home. Nowadays, you can choose a public or private school that will help you stick to your subject plan.
There are full-time and correspondence types of training, when a child goes to school all day once or twice a week, and studies at home the rest of the time. In one or two days, children learn new material and practice it with their parents at home. At the same time, the learning process is clearly monitored by both parents and teachers.

You can also transfer a child in a regular school to correspondence education. In this case, the procedure for studying, providing homework and checking the completed work, consultations with teachers - all these nuances are discussed with the administration of the chosen educational institution, and may vary from school to school.

Full-time education in family schools suitable for those parents who are interested in their children attending school more often. Children go to school 3-4 times a week. These schools provide education in small classes with a carefully balanced course load.

Legal side

Homeschooling is regulated by laws. The Law “On Education” of July 10, 1992 gave parents the right to choose the form of education - to teach their child at school or in the family. Federal Law of the Russian Federation of December 29, 2012 N 273-FZ “On Education in the Russian Federation” also confirmed this right.

Why homeschooling is attractive

Individual approach. Family education allows you to build a schedule and education system that suits your child. It also allows you to approach the learning process creatively, through play, which is especially important in elementary school.

You can study from anywhere in the world. Since the main participants in the educational process are parents and children, this allows you to study from any country and combine travel, life in other countries with education in Russia.

You can choose your child's environment. Homeschooled children make friends based on their interests. And if we talk about the “homeschool” company, it is prestigious among them to know a lot and compete with each other on the topic “who knows more” and “who can tell more interesting things.” For a child, such an environment is an additional motivation to learn. However, this plus can easily be attributed to the minuses - after all, children can be allowed to choose their environment themselves, and not select only “good boys and girls.”

You will have a circle of like-minded people. When you start homeschooling your child, you will meet parents who are just as interested in learning, who are ready to communicate, make family friends and help each other.

The child learns to build relationships with different people and respect the differences of people. With teachers, friends, parents of friends, homeschoolers better understand that all people are different, everyone has their own point of view, they better navigate new rules and communicate with new people and sincerely do not understand what it is like to be “like everyone else.”

What's Unattractive About Homeschooling?

The child may become bored and lonely. No matter how well the child’s life schedule is organized, there are times when company will not hurt - for example, when the parents are busy with work, and the child is sad in the next room. Homeschool parents will support us - so that the child does not get bored, you can take care of additional meetings with friends, for example, inviting someone to visit.

The danger of gadgets. If your child is left at home alone, it is important to put time limits on computers, tablets and phones. We work to prevent computer addiction.

Alone at home. It is important to consider how long the child can stay at home alone, and whether a relative can help and look after him.

Payment for educational services. Typically, in the process of home education, parents hire tutors, and their work costs money. Also, joining a school can be either paid or free. If you do not want to leave your child alone, you will have to pay for the services of a nanny.

What parents need to be prepared for

In general, when choosing family education, parents should clearly understand their motivation. Based on it, it is important to write down goals for the year, and for the entire time that the child will study in the family. In addition to goals, it is important to identify criteria for monitoring the quality of education - whether it will be assignments completed for school, or a teacher’s assessment, or the Unified State Exam.

Parents should pay attention to nurturing their child’s self-motivation. This is important in any education, but since at school the child is additionally supervised by the teacher, and at home the child can sometimes do his homework himself while his mother works on the computer nearby, it is important that the child wants to do his homework efficiently and independently. Self-motivation and self-control are what parents can teach. There is no need to rush in this matter; you should spend at least six months on cultivating these qualities and continue to maintain these qualities.

Responsibility for the learning outcome is divided into several parts. The first and main part of the responsibility lies with the parents - on how they organize the learning process, whether they invite tutors in specialized subjects, and whether they explain to the child the importance of classes and a good education. In a word, will parents be able to create external motivation in their child?
The child’s responsibility is that he is sincerely interested in learning and tries to complete tasks on time and, if possible, independently.

Be prepared that during home schooling your child will be around you more often, so your schedule of work, sports, and meetings with friends will be constantly dependent on the child’s life schedule. Understand for yourself whether you are ready for this.

And the process of homeschooling itself requires the close attention of parents. For example, a child can work hard on homework all week, and on Saturday it turns out that he only did English, six months in advance. And on Saturday I came to my parents for help with math. That is, parents will have to constantly keep their finger on the pulse and, in a sense, play the role of a head teacher.

It is important to choose a pace of study that is appropriate for the child and his age. This way you will avoid overload and keep your child interested in learning. And if the child himself wants to read something additionally, study it more deeply, he always has the opportunity to do it on his own or ask his parents for help.
