In addition to the texts contained in the Service Book, Official also contains texts and instructions relating exclusively to the bishop's worship: the rites of ordination (ordination to the degree of reader, subdeacon, ordination to the deacon, priest and bishop, consecration of antimensions and churches, cooking of the world, meeting the bishop and his vestments.

If the Greek Euchologium is intended for use both during the bishop's service and when performing the service by the presbyter, then in the Russian Church a special book is assigned for the bishop's service, which is called the Official. The name of the book is explained by the fact that it contains the “rites” of various services performed only by the bishop. The Modern Official is published in two parts. The first part of the book contains the sequences of Vespers, Matins and the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great and the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. Particular attention here (in contrast to the Service Book) is paid to the peculiarities of the bishop's performance of these services. Then follow special “rites” performed only by the bishop. These are the ranks of all consecrations (deacon, presbyter and bishop) and consecrations (reader and subdeacon), as well as the ranks of promotion to a higher rank (protodeacon, archdeacon, archpriest, abbot, archimandrite). There is also a sequence for the bishop’s consecration of the antimension and some rites and prayers that are in the Service Book, but can be performed by the bishop (for example, the rite of blessing the koliva). It should also be noted that the texts of the bishop’s prayers and exclamations are typed in Church Slavonic font, and relatively large for ease of reading by the bishop. All other remarks and prayers that priests and deacons say are in much smaller civil font. In conclusion, we note that the most widespread and used in the Russian Church remains the 1982 edition, which was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the episcopal consecration of His Holiness Patriarch Pimen. In 2009, a new edition of the Bishop's Official was published, which became the first book published by the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus'. In comparison with the 1982 edition, some changes have been made to the text of the new edition, reflecting the modern practice of bishops and the peculiarities of the Patriarchal ministry. In particular, the texts of the litanies used in the rites of ordinations of deacon and priest are placed both in the text of the corresponding rite, and (for the first time) on a special insert that can be temporarily given to the concelebrating archdeacon or priest. At the end of the volume an opening psalm (103) is added.

History of the modern edition of the text

Currently used in the Russian Orthodox Church Official- edition of 1675 (published under Patriarch Joachim); was compiled by Euthymius Chudovsky and other references based on the “Rite of the Bishop’s Celebration of the Liturgy,” written in 1653 at the request of Patriarch Nikon by Patriarch Athanasius III of Constantinople; moreover, the word “Patriarch” is everywhere replaced by “bishop”, and the concelebrating “bishops” are replaced by “archimandrites”.

Liturgical books in Ancient Rus' were often the only source for reading; some of them were used to learn to read and write. The texts contained in them were constantly heard during church services. Then other times came... Now these books are again publicly available, but many people, with the exception of clergy and some scientists, have not even heard of their existence. Let's try to fill this gap a little.

Liturgical Gospel has its own differences in the organization of the text from the Gospel that we read at home. In the liturgical Gospel, the text is divided into “conceptions,” that is, passages that are read at the service. In addition, it indicates the beginnings of phrases that we hear during worship, but never find in the text of the Gospel: “At the time it was...” or “The Lord spoke...”, etc. At the end of the liturgical Gospel there is an index of readings for each day of the year (each liturgical book has its own “core”, the basis of its content, and more or less numerous appendices that are included in it for ease of use; sometimes the appendices can be the same for different books).

Apostle contains the Acts of the Apostles and Epistles. This book also contains prokeimenons and alleluiaries, since this is very convenient: the reader or deacon comes out, proclaims the prokeimenon, reads the Apostle, and then recites verses called alleluiaries. The Apostle contains holiday and daily antiphons, as well as an index of readings by day of the year.


Book of Hours - a liturgical book containing the texts of the unchangeable prayer books of the daily liturgical circle (including hours), as well as the texts of some of the most commonly used changeable prayer books.

Typicon this is a liturgical book containing a liturgical charter, a month book with Mark chapters connecting the movable and fixed annual liturgical circles, rules on fasting, rules of monastic community life and instructions on the celebration of temple holidays

Octoechos contains hymns (troparia, kontakion, canons, etc.), divided into eight tunes or “voices.” Each voice, in turn, contains hymns for the entire week, so that the services of the Octoechos are repeated once every eight weeks. The division of church singing into voices was accomplished by the famous hymnist of the Greek Church, St. John of Damascus (VIII century). The compilation of the Octoechos is also attributed to him, although it should be noted that St. took part in the compilation of the Octoechos. Breviary this is a liturgical book containing the rites of the Sacraments and other sacred rites performed by the church on special occasions and not included in the temple (public) worship of the daily, weekly and annual cycle.

“On church liturgical language”

1. The Slavic language in worship is the great sacred heritage of our native church antiquity and therefore it must be preserved and supported as the main language of our worship.

2. In order to bring our church services closer to the understanding of the common people, the rights of the All-Russian and Little Russian languages ​​for liturgical use are recognized.

3. The immediate and widespread replacement of the Church Slavonic language in worship with the all-Russian or Little Russian language is undesirable and impracticable.

4. Partial use of the all-Russian or Little Russian language in worship (reading the word of God, individual chants, prayers, replacement of individual words and sayings, etc.) in order to achieve a more intelligible understanding of worship with the approval of this by the church authorities is desirable at the present time.

5. The application of any parish about the desire to listen to divine services in the All-Russian or Little Russian languages, to the extent possible, is subject to satisfaction upon approval of the translation by the church authorities.

6. The Holy Gospel in such cases is read in two languages, Slavic and Russian or Little Russian.

7. It is necessary to immediately form a special commission under the Higher Church Administration both to simplify and correct the Church Slavonic text of liturgical books, and to translate divine services into All-Russian or Little Russian and other languages ​​used in the Russian Church, and the commission should take into account both existing experiences of such translations , and appearing again.

8. The Higher Church Administration must immediately take care of the publication of liturgical books in parallel Slavic, All-Russian or Little Russian languages ​​used in the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as the publication of the same separate books with selected Church Slavonic liturgical prayers and chants.

ORDER OF ALL-NIGHT SERVICE

VESPERS

The divine service, which takes place at the end of the day and is the beginning of the daily cycle of church services, is called Vespers. Vespers contains prayers, chants and sacred rites in which the Holy Church glorifies God the Creator for His Providence for the world and man. It takes believers to Old Testament times, recalling the blissful stay of our first parents in paradise, their needs and sorrows after the Fall, the promise given to them and all people about the Savior of the world; about the faith of Old Testament man in the redemption of the human race by the death on the cross of the Only Begotten Son of God. The royal doors open, remaining open until the end of the service. The Protodeacon, wearing a surplice, orar and cords, took a lighted candle and a censer and handed the latter to the Bishop, saying:

Bishop (blessing, says a prayer): We offer the censer to You, Christ our God, as an aroma of spiritual fragrance; accept him onto Your altar above heaven and send down upon us the grace of Your Most Holy Spirit, that we may glorify You with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Protodeacon: Rise up . (Then, turning his face to the east, he says): God bless.

At the beginning of the singing of the 103rd Psalm, the bishop, preceded by a deacon with a candle, censes the entire church. While singing “Lord, I cry to You” and the stichera, the deacon censes the altar, the entire temple and the worshipers. I cried to You, Lord, I said: You are my refuge and my portion in the land of the living. Listen to my cry, for I am very weak; deliver me from my persecutors, for they are stronger than me. Bring my soul out of prison, so that I may glorify Your name. The righteous will gather around me when You show me a benefit. (Ps. 141).
