Progestins are steroid hormones produced mainly by the corpus luteum of the ovaries and partly by the adrenal cortex, as well as by the placenta of the fetus. The main progestin hormone in humans is progesterone. There are also synthetic analogues of gestagens on the market: medroxyprogesterone, megestrol, dydrogesterone, cyproterone, levonorgestrel, desogestrel, norethisterone, drospirenone, etc.

The main physiological role of gestagens in women is mainly to enable the onset and then to maintain pregnancy (gestation).
