Astringent, drying, anti-inflammatory. Forms a film that protects the endings of sensory nerves from irritation, reduces the feeling of pain, limits or prevents the development of edema. Being a practically insoluble bismuth salt in water, it is slightly absorbed. The resorbed part is excreted mainly in the urine, but some amount can be retained in bones and tissues (can accumulate, causing intoxication syndrome). Bismuth crosses the placenta. Causes local constriction of blood vessels, reduces their permeability, reduces exudation, reduces the intensity of the inflammatory process, and does not irritate tissues.
