It often happens that we no longer need a certain item in the dacha, but we can always modernize it a little and get it useful thing. Today we will turn not to pieces of furniture, boxes or even old buckets into which we breathed a second life, but to the plants that are available at our summer cottage. Plant debris and leftovers can also be beneficial!

How to use plant waste and leftovers for good? Why shouldn't you throw away branches and tops?

What to do with old stumps

Uprooting an old orchard or just trees outside the dacha is already difficult work, to still think about what to do with the old stumps. But in this situation, there is no need to look for a solution to the issue, because it has been available for a long time. Any old stump can be used as decoration on the site, which is called a rutaria. If you apply a little imagination, not only single figures, but also entire compositions can be made from stumps.

In addition, stumps can also be used in the place where the tree itself previously grew. There is no need to waste energy on digging and uprooting, undermining a large stump with a tractor or other power engineering, because you can always make a nice landscape object out of a stump, inside which you can organize a flower bed.

Flowers, herbs, spices, berry bushes and even bonsai can be placed in the cavity of an old stump.

What to do with cut down trees

A missing garden is usually removed from the territory of the dacha to make room for new plantings, as well as outdated or simply damaged branches from mature large trees. But you don’t need to organize recycling for wood, because it can happen right at the dacha, but in different ways and with benefit.

  • Old branches will be used as firewood to light the fireplace, or can be used in the grill and barbecue oven for cooking;
  • Often branches also perform decorative tasks, when they are used to form individual figures, or, as in the case of rutaria, compositions for decorating the landscape;
  • Also, straighter branches are used for building fences in the backyard, for example, to separate the main yard of a summer house from the utility yard. Certain types of wood even make good wicker fences, which are simply called wooden tyn;
  • Engaging in woodworking at the dacha, choosing raw materials from the trees of the old garden is not the most best idea, but some branches or logs can become parts of decorative country furniture, stands and supports, elements of some household structures;
  • Don’t forget that small branches are easily chopped up by a garden shredder and used to mulch the soil in the garden and flower beds.

Making good use of tree bark

We once described in detail a garden shredder (mentioned literally in the last section of the article), which can become not only an excellent assistant in the country, but also the equipment that will help process unnecessary things into useful ones.

It's about not only about branches, which the shredder transforms into wood chips, but also about tree bark, which, after the shredder, becomes an excellent material for mulching and even decorating the soil.

Wood chips made from bark are most suitable for protecting the soil in an orchard, where it can be used to cover tree trunks with a layer of 5-7 cm. So root system will not dry out, and the soil will maintain its integrity.

Tree bark is also a good fuel, but it is worth remembering that very often, due to its structure, it smokes. Therefore, if you decide to make a fire from bark, it is better to use it on the grill rather than in a home oven.

In addition, there are many more ways to usefully use tree bark in the country, but they all require additional costs or special equipment.

So, for example, valuable fuel granules that hold heat well can be pressed from the bark, organo-mineral fertilizers can be produced, used as an additive in special substrates, etc.

Use of sawdust

Sawdust is not plant waste during felling or uprooting, but is such after sawing work. If you have special woodworking equipment in your garage or shed, then using different wood at the dacha, you simultaneously receive sawdust. Quite a few of them will remain after cutting up the old orchard, which we have already divided into stumps, branches and bark.

The use of sawdust can be very wide, but we will mention only those areas where it is most useful to us.

  • Sawdust is an excellent insulation material. It is clear that to insulate the ceiling of a country house or the floor of a barn you will need a lot of them, but this idea is still worth remembering;
  • Don’t forget about this material when growing mushrooms in the country, because sawdust makes an excellent substrate;
  • Also, they can be placed on small domestic animals as an insulating and drying layer, for example, in a rabbitry, in a cage with nutria, or even for your dog in an enclosure;
  • Sawdust can be used as organic fertilizers;
  • It is also possible to obtain fuel pellets from them, but here again special equipment is needed, as in the production of cement-bonded particle boards or other blocks for construction;
  • It is worth using sawdust in repair work or during construction. By mixing sawdust with PVA glue, you get a good putty for large cracks in wood. Also, this mixture can be used to coat the seams between OSB panels, then they will become completely invisible.

Are there any benefits from fallen leaves?

The benefits of fallen leaves have been known for a long time, and only an inexperienced summer resident can collect them in heaps and simply burn them, forcing neighbors to breathe in the acrid smoke from the fire. We decided to tell you like with the greatest benefit use fallen leaves in the garden:

  • A mixture of fallen leaves and weeds without roots and seeds, which rots in a plastic bag - a substrate for early planting and house plants;
  • Leaves can also serve as soil cover. Warming, preventing weathering and washing out, preserving moisture;
  • Large leaves with a dense structure are used to cover many garden plants for the winter, as well as flowers in flower beds.

There are also additional areas application of leaves, but all of them are associated with fertilizers or covering the soil. You just shouldn’t use nut leaves, since, according to the observations of many summer residents, due to the juglone content in them, they can have negative impact.

Although this is a controversial point, because it is the walnut leaf that helps keep some plants warm, completely eliminating the occurrence of fungus and mold.

How to use corn stalk

Not everyone is interested in growing corn in the country, and even those who plant this plant on the territory of a country garden, does this for different purposes.

Many people like boiled young ears of corn, which can be chewed simply with salt or added to salads. But many people grow corn to feed birds and other country animals. Therefore, it is worth noting that the harvest is harvested in different times, which means that corn plant residues will be in different condition.

Green corn stalks are great for producing livestock feed, so don't throw them away right away. You can even make an excellent winter supplement called silage from the stems. But let’s say right away that few summer residents are engaged in such matters, and this requires quite a lot of green mass.

But it also happens that corn stalks last until autumn, and even completely dry out in the garden. This is not a problem, and you should not cut them down and burn them, because the dense structure of the dry stem makes it quite durable. Thanks to this, corn stalk becomes a material for building temporary fences in the farm yard, or even material for garden paths in cold autumn weather when it is damp and muddy underfoot.

The stems also serve well as covering material for berry bushes, as bedding in a compost heap, and also for wrapping young trees in the garden. Old-time summer residents also claim that if you stack corn stalks tightly and in several rows in a garden bed, the ground in this place practically does not freeze, and this is the place that is most suitable for early planting.

How to care for the soil (video)

Straw in the country garden

Straw can safely be considered plant residues, because it is the stem of cereal plants, from which we, first of all, need only grain. But few people grow crops at their dacha that produce straw, except perhaps rye for green manure. But even here we cannot wait for straw, because green manure is used in full after mowing.

But straw in the country is not only needed, but even necessary. There are many tips related to straw, thanks to which crops grow much better than before.

It is clear that straw can be used for animal feed and bedding, for draining certain areas and for covering plants, but Straw is most often used in following cases:

  • Creating a surface layer, something like a substrate, through which almost everything grows well. At the same time, moisture does not leave the soil, the temperature is stable, and weeds practically do not break through it. And also under the straw there are many useful worms that are responsible for loosening the soil;
  • Straw is good for growing potatoes. This best material for beds where there will now be a good harvest, and the soil will become very soft by the time of harvest;
  • Straw is also suitable for insulating beds with plants, but you need to make sure that it is not trampled down too much, otherwise the straw may begin to warm up, and this is not very good.

Stems of sunflower and Jerusalem artichoke

Many people try to get rid of Jerusalem artichoke, as this plant grows too quickly over summer cottage. But there are many advantages from it, as, in principle, from sunflowers. ABOUT beneficial properties or taste qualities we will not talk, but will only confirm that you can use dry stalks of these plants in the same way as dry corn stalks.

At the dacha, you can put a lot of things to good use, even plant residues. Roots, bark and leaves of trees are used, as well as plant stems, straw, and even dried flower petals, from which you can make jam, tea and some medicines. Therefore, do not rush to throw away what has already produced a harvest, because any plant can still serve you, even if it has died and dried up.

Use of vegetable waste and residues at the dacha - good topic for practical summer residents, and we really hope that this article will be useful to you. If you know other ways to use plant residues, or we forgot to mention something important, be sure to write about it in the comments to the article.

It would be nice if we found new look fuel for cars, which was enough for long distances, but it would not have been expensive.

What if we could use already known and available funds for its manufacture? Maybe we could use something that no one else needs - if someone is going to throw away rubbish, why not just give it to us! It would be great if someone invents free fuel. Incredibly, this has already happened; some are already using vegetable oil.

Most restaurants simply throw away the waste, while proponents of plant-based fuels make deals with nearby food establishments where they are allowed to periodically come and pick up used oil. Does it matter how long the car can travel on such fuel if you got it for free? Of course, there is one problem - it’s not enough to just pour oil into the tank and drive wherever you look - there is a possibility of ruining the engine. There is no guarantee that the use of such alternative fuels will occur nationwide, but they are an alternative to expensive and increasingly scarce fossil fuels.

Before pouring yesterday's chicken fat into gas tanks, we must learn to distinguish between vegetable oils used as fuel and biofuel itself. Biofuel is a type of fuel obtained from plant sources - often soybean - that has been purified by special equipment that complies with pollution laws environment. Many diesel vehicles can run on biofuel or a blend of biofuel and diesel without much modification.

Using vegetable oil for fuel is a completely different matter. Mostly, people use oil that can be bought in the supermarket. But this is more of a homemade product. This oil is not processed, refined or tested in accordance with environmental laws.

Use of vegetable oils as fuel.

How to use vegetable oil as fuel? First, you must have a diesel engine. Spark plugs used in standard gasoline engines would have a very difficult time achieving combustion with vegetable oil. The fuel lines and pumps in a gas engine are not designed to handle this type of fuel, and many fuel ratio meters in modern vehicles simply cannot handle this alternative.

Used and cooled vegetable oil must be completely filtered before use.

If you have a diesel engine, you can use non-recycled oil. However, vegetable oil has a very high viscosity. It has such a dense consistency that the engine has difficulty burning it completely when sprayed into the combustion chamber. As a result, unburned fuel clogs the engine. There are several options to solve this problem. First, mix vegetable oil with more traditional fuels such as diesel. This will reduce the clog problem, but will not solve it completely.

Another solution is two tanks. Diesel fuel will allow you to start or stop the engine. The engine heats up when starting, pushing oil out of the engine before shutting down. The oil in the other tank heats up, and the heated oil is atomized better. In fact, vegetable oil often solidifies at room temperature, so it must be heated for it to work. However, this is not yet a final solution to the problem. To effectively use vegetable oil as a fuel, some significant modifications to the engine are necessary.

Start by installing new fuel nozzles with an extensive filtration system to ensure only clean fuel enters the combustion chamber. Those who use used cooking oil from restaurants will need to pass the oil through several filters before it can be poured into the gas tank. As a filter, you can use absolutely any durable fabric that prevents pieces of food from entering and clogging the fuel lines - it is recommended to use a filter with a mesh size of 40 microns.

New spark plugs used to warm the fuel during cold starting conditions can also improve performance, but only if they are made specifically for use with oil. Some companies make kits that include everything needed to complete this modification. They range in price from a few hundred dollars to $3,000, not including installation. The Elsbett Company manufactures engines specifically designed to run on oil, and the company also does engine conversions.

Does using oil pay off?

As you know, the engine can actually run on vegetable oil, but is it worth it? From the financial side, of course not. The money you save on fuel will not cover the cost of engine transformation. In addition, the cost of vegetable oil is approximately the same as diesel fuel. Oil may cost less, it all depends on where you live or where you buy it, but the difference is still insignificant. What if you take butter from restaurants for free? What if you get fuel for free, can you save money? Today – yes!

Today the oil is used as a fuel by a relatively small number of adherents. It won't take long for restaurants to realize that butter is becoming a hot commodity because... every day more and more more people interested in them. Free fuel supplies will disappear quickly. But make no mistake: the amount of vegetable oil from restaurants every day may seem like enough, but it is nothing compared to the millions of barrels of fuel that the world consumes daily.

There is little chance that used oil will become the main fuel for our cars, and even less chance that it will continue to be free. In reality, unfortunately, there is no way to save money using vegetable oil, but there are other reasons for using it. Doesn't exist official statistics mileage of cars on oil, but experience shows that those who tried it were able to increase their mileage by up to 20 percent. Despite the economic disadvantages, there are environmental benefits to using oil as a fuel.

The plant-based fuel allows for cleaner combustion and is non-toxic. Unlike fossil fuels, they are derived from renewable resources. Implementation modern methods conducting agriculture will allow you to grow a lot of soybeans. But is it enough to refuel a car? vehicles in everything in the world? Time will show.

 Taking into account These benefits, it may seem like a great idea to start converting all vehicles to run on vegetable oil. Before we embrace such large-scale changes, we need to consider the possible consequences.

Increased demand for fuels from food crops, e.g. ethanol, which is made from grain and sugar, will lead to higher food prices. Also, the popularity of such alternative fuels could lead to the destruction of tropical forests, as farmers begin to cut down and burn forests to make way for new soybean fields. It seems that no matter how much we want to solve vital energy problems, we will not be able to find simple answers.
