Codelac neo for adults. "Codelac Neo": reviews, instructions for use

“Codelac” in tablets has long been used in the treatment of dry cough in adults, but an analogue in liquid form called “Codelac Neo” is produced especially for children. It has a slightly different composition and a safer effect, so this remedy is more in demand in childhood against painful dry cough.

Release form

In pharmacies you can find several types of Codelac Neo.

  • Drops. This clear, yellowish or colorless liquid is sold in a glass dropper bottle containing 20 ml of solution. The medicine has a sweetish taste and smell of vanilla. Each milliliter of the drug contains 22 drops.
  • Syrup. This version of the medicine also tastes sweet, smells like vanilla, is colorless and transparent. It is produced in dark glass bottles containing 100 or 200 ml of the drug. The medicine package contains a 5 ml measuring spoon.

It should be noted that Codelac Neo is also available in tablets, but this medicine is not prescribed to children, since it has a high dosage and a dense shell that does not allow the tablet to be divided into parts.

Compound

The main ingredient in all forms of Codelac Neo is butamirate.

It is presented in medicines in the form of citrate in the following dosage:

  • 5 mg in 1 milliliter of drops (100 mg in one bottle);
  • 1.5 mg in 1 milliliter of syrup (7.5 mg in one scoop).

The composition of the auxiliary components of both types of liquid medicine is identical and includes benzoic acid, glycerol and sodium hydroxide. To make the product sweet, it contains sorbitol and sodium saccharinate, and vanillin is added to the solution for flavor. These medications contain both ethyl alcohol 95% in small quantities and pure water.

Operating principle

The active substance of the syrup and drops can influence the cough center, which is located in the tissues of the brain. Thanks to this, Codelac Neo suppresses the cough reflex, as a result of which the patient gets rid of an obsessive irritable cough, called dry. In addition, thanks to this medicine, the mucous membrane of the bronchi and upper respiratory tract becomes less reactive, which is why the number of coughing attacks is reduced.

Indications

Codelac Neo is a symptomatic remedy, since the drug affects only one symptom that is characteristic of many diseases of the respiratory system - cough. As already emphasized above, the medication helps eliminate dry cough, so it is in demand in patients with influenza, colds, laryngitis, whooping cough, laryngotracheitis and other pathologies in which the patient coughs often, but practically no sputum is produced.

In addition, drops and syrup are used during operations on the bronchi and before bronchoscopy.

They are also prescribed after acute inflammation of the respiratory tract to get rid of residual unproductive cough.

At what age is it prescribed?

Codelac Neo is an antitussive drug approved for children. This drug can be given in drops even to an infant over two months old. Since the syrup contains a different dosage, this form of medication is prescribed no earlier than the little patient turns 3 years old.

Contraindications

Both liquid forms of Codelac Neo should not be used in the treatment of children who have hypersensitivity to any ingredient of these medications. They should also not be given to children with fructose intolerance. Since the composition of the syrup and drops includes ethanol, for liver pathologies they are prescribed only under the supervision of a doctor.

Patients with epilepsy or brain diseases also require caution.

Side effects

During treatment with Codelac Neo, addiction does not develop and respiratory depression is not observed. However, some children may react to such drugs with drowsiness, nausea, allergic reactions, dizziness, loose stools and other ailments.

In such a situation, you need to consult a doctor and, if necessary, replace Codelac Neo with an equally effective analogue.

How to use?

To eliminate night cough, the last dose is recommended at night.

If after 5 days from the start of use the cough still persists, you need to be examined again by a doctor.

The single dosage of drops is affected by the age of the baby:

  • A baby up to one year old is given 10 drops per dose;
  • for a child 1–3 years old – 15 drops at a time;
  • for a patient over 3 years old - 25 drops per application.

The dosage of syrup is also determined depending on age:

  • children 3–6 years old are prescribed 5 ml;
  • Patients 6–12 years old are given 10 ml of syrup per appointment;
  • from 12 years of age, the single dose is increased to 15 ml of syrup.

Overdose

If a child accidentally drinks more Codelac Neo than he is supposed to by age, this can lead to an attack of vomiting, a decrease in heart rate, drowsiness, arrhythmia and other symptoms. If an overdose is detected, it is recommended to consult a doctor.

Drug interactions

The instructions for Codelac Neo drugs indicate that they are not recommended for use together with any drugs that have a depressant effect on the central nervous system (for example, with sleeping pills or antipsychotics).

In addition, due to blocking the cough reflex, Codelac Neo should not be used with expectorants.

Terms of sale and storage

Both types of Codelac Neo are classified as over-the-counter medications, sold without problems in any pharmacy. On average, you need to pay 150 rubles for 100 ml of syrup, and the price of one bottle of drops is 250–280 rubles.

You can store such medications at home at room temperature, placing the bottle in a dry place where small children will not find it. The shelf life of both liquid medicines is 2 years from the date of manufacture.

Reviews

You can see quite a lot of positive reviews about the use of Codelac Neo. Mothers confirm the effectiveness of such medications for dry cough. Among the advantages of the drops are the possibility of use in infants and ease of dosing. Both liquid versions of the medicine have a pleasant odor and sweetish taste, so children usually do not have any problems swallowing them.

Among the disadvantages, side effects are usually mentioned, which rarely occur in young patients.

Analogs

If you need to replace the syrup or drops with a similar medicine, the doctor may prescribe another drug from the Codelac line of antitussives.

  • Codelac tablets, containing codeine, licorice, sodium bicarbonate and thermopsis. Its ingredients suppress the cough reflex, reduce the viscosity of secretions, facilitating easier coughing up of mucus, so the drug is especially in demand in the treatment of dry cough. It can be used from 2 years of age.

  • "Codelac Phyto"- a liquid analogue of the drug in tablets, in which instead of sodium bicarbonate there is an extract from thyme. This elixir affects the cough center and the condition of sputum. It is prescribed from the age of two for laryngotracheitis, whooping cough, influenza and other diseases.

  • "Codelac Broncho". This medicine in tablets is also similar to the usual Codelac, but the codeine in it is replaced with ambroxol, which gives the medication stronger expectorant properties and eliminates the effect on the brain. It is allowed to be used in children from 12 years of age. There is also a liquid form of the drug "Broncho", prescribed from the age of two. It is represented by an elixir, in which ambroxol is supplemented with glycyrrhizic acid and thyme extract. Both medications are used for inflammatory processes in which very viscous sputum is produced, for example, with bronchitis.

pharmachologic effect

pharmachologic effect- anti-inflammatory, bronchodilator, expectorant, antitussive.

Pharmacodynamics

A non-opioid antitussive agent that has a direct effect on the cough center. Butamirate citrate is neither chemically nor pharmacologically related to opium alkaloids. It has an antitussive, expectorant, moderate bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory effect, improves spirometry (reduces airway resistance) and blood oxygenation.

Pharmacokinetics

Oral drops, syrup

Suction. After oral administration, the drug is quickly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. After taking 150 mg of butamirate, the Cmax of the main metabolite (2-phenylbutyric acid) in the blood plasma is reached after approximately 1.5 hours and is 6.4 μg/ml.

Distribution and metabolism. Hydrolysis of butamirate, initially to 2-phenylbutyric acid and diethylaminoethoxyethanol, begins in the blood. These metabolites also have antitussive activity, and, like butamirate, are largely (about 95%) bound to plasma proteins, which determines their long half-life. 2-phenylbutyric acid is partially metabolized by hydroxylation.

When taking the drug again, cumulation is not observed.

Excretion. T1/2 is 6 hours. All three metabolites are excreted mainly in the urine. Moreover, 2-phenylbutyric acid is mainly excreted in the form associated with glucuronic acid.

Modified-release film-coated tablets

Absorption is high. After oral administration of a modified-release tablet, Cmax in plasma of the main metabolite (2-phenylbutyric acid) is observed after 9 hours and is 1.4 μg/ml.

Main settings

Name: KODELAK NEO
ATX code: R05DB13 -

Codelac Neo is a centrally acting medicine against dry cough, often prescribed for infections of the ENT organs. Instructions for use of Codelac Neo syrup allow the use of the medication to treat young patients.

Release form and contents of the product

The medicine is produced:

  • in bottles with a dropper stopper of 20 ml. Codelac Neo drops are prescribed to infants from 2 months of life;
  • in tablet form, 10 pieces per package. The tablets are intended for patients over 18 years of age;
  • in the form of syrup in bottles of 100 and 200 ml. Used by children from 3 years of age and adults.

In syrup form, the product is often used to treat young children. The bottle comes with a convenient double-sided spoon for precise dosage of the substance (2.5 and 5 ml).

Most often, syrup is prescribed as part of complex therapy simultaneously with other anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics. The liquid form of the product tastes good, has a slight vanilla scent, and is well tolerated by children.

Codelac Neo contains the main ingredient - butamirate citrate. Auxiliary components include sorbitol, glycerol, ethyl alcohol and others.

Therapeutic properties

Codelac Neo cough syrup is an antitussive medicine that acts directly on the receptors of the cough center. Due to the main component butamirate citrate, the medication suppresses attacks of dry cough, reduces inflammation and expectorates phlegm. The highest concentration of substances occurs 90 minutes after consumption. The drug is excreted from the body by the kidneys after 6 hours.

In addition to its expectorant properties, the syrup helps relax the muscles of the bronchi, relieving suffocating attacks.

By directly influencing the cough center, the drug reduces the intensity of spasms, as well as the frequency and strength of coughing, which is especially important in the treatment of whooping cough in young patients
. In addition, its antitussive, bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory properties help improve the patient's respiratory abilities.

The main advantages of Codelac Neo are:

  • can be used on the recommendation of the attending physician in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy;
  • the use of syrup does not suppress respiratory function;
  • allowed for use by diabetics: it does not contain sucrose and glucose;
  • allowed for use in children over 3 years of age;
  • does not contain codeine, which can cause addiction.

Regular use of Codelac Neo helps to completely eliminate cough. Already after the first use, the drug begins its antitussive effect. A decrease in the intensity of dry cough can be felt on the first day of therapy. The duration of the medicinal effect of the liquid form can last up to 6 hours.

Indications for use

Codelac Neo is used as part of a complex treatment of infectious diseases accompanied by coughs of various origins, including ARVI and influenza.

In addition, the medicine is prescribed:

  • from dry cough caused by whooping cough;
  • after surgical intervention on the bronchopulmonary system;
  • before and after bronchoscopy.

The high effectiveness and safety of the main component butamirate in eliminating non-productive cough has been confirmed by clinical trials.

By exerting a selective effect on receptors, the syrup successfully inhibits cough reflexes, relieves irritation of the mucous membranes, due to which the smooth muscles of the bronchi relax.

Instructions for use and dosage

Codelac Neo should be taken on an empty stomach, without diluting the product with water. The required dosage and duration of therapy is determined individually by a medical professional.

Most often, the syrup is taken for 3 to 5 days. Codelac Neo syrup for children is prescribed in the following doses:

  • from 3 to 6 years – 1 measuring spoon (5 ml) three times a day;
  • from 6 to 12 years – 2 measuring spoons;
  • adolescents over 12 years old – 3 scoops 3 times a day;
  • adults – 15 ml (3 scoops) four times a day.

If there is no positive dynamics from therapy, or if your health worsens, you must stop treatment and consult a specialist.

Contraindications

Restrictions on taking the drug are:

  • hypersensitivity to the active or excipients of the drug;
  • fructosemia;
  • period of bearing a child (1st trimester), breastfeeding stage;
  • The baby is less than 3 years old.

The syrup is not suitable for children under 3 years of age: in the treatment of this group of patients, Codelac Neo is used in a different dosage form (drops).

Particular care must be taken in patients with liver and central nervous system diseases, persons suffering from alcoholism and epilepsy, as well as those with a tendency to drug addiction. The syrup should be used with caution in patients with intracranial hypertension.

The medicine can provoke drug dependence, so treatment should not take more than 5 days.

During pregnancy and lactation

Codelac Neo during pregnancy can only be used in the second and third trimester. However, the remedy is not suitable for self-medication: only a medical specialist should weigh the likely threat to the life of the mother and child with the potential benefit.

It is forbidden to take the medicine in the early stages of pregnancy, since there is no data on its penetration through the placenta.

During breastfeeding, the use of the medication is not allowed. If it is necessary to take it, lactation must be suspended: the ability of the drug to penetrate into mother's milk has not yet been studied.

Side effects and overdose

Most often, the medicine is easily tolerated by patients. However, if you are individually intolerant to butamirate, the following negative reactions are likely to occur:

  • pain symptoms in the head;
  • dizziness;
  • loss of strength, weakness;
  • bloating;
  • pain in the epigastric region;
  • appetite disorder;
  • skin rash;
  • swelling of the nasal passages and upper ENT organs.

Prolonged use of the drug, as well as the use of high doses, can lead to overdose symptoms, manifested in the form of:

  • coordination problems;
  • dizziness;
  • nausea;
  • drowsiness;
  • stomach upsets;
  • reduction of blood pressure indicators;
  • gag reflexes.

In this case, the patient requires symptomatic treatment in the form of gastric lavage, as well as taking enterosorbents.

Interaction with other substances
